I thught lng and hard. I finally decided that there was n answer t my prblem. I wuld simply tell her, and then wait five minutes fr the explsin.
S that night I prpsed, and afterwards I tld Sharn that I was nt ging t wear a ring. I simply said: “I just dn't like rings. I dn't wear a high schl ” I expected Sharn t becme enraged: “WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE NOT GOING TO WEAR A WEDDING RING?”
Hwever, instead, I merely heard silence. After what in my mind seemed like an age, Sharn quietly remarked: “Fine. If yu dn't want t wear a wedding ring, I wn't change my name. I will nt call myself Sharn Segal.”
On ur fifteenth anniversary (周年纪念日), I remembered the first lessn f marriage that was taught t me by my wife Sharn Gail Segal as I lked dwn upn the ring n my ring finger — COMPROMISE (妥协).

Researchers frm the Technical University f Munich (TUM) and the University f Clgne (UC) in Germany have develped an AI-based learning system.
The idea is simple yet effective: a webcam (网络摄像头) tracks students’ eye mvements. Maike Schindler, a math prfessr frm the UC, and her team have designed hundreds f math tasks invlving basic math skills. Depending n the task, specific patterns appear, which are shwn digitally n a heat map, with red indicating areas where the children lk frequently and green shwing the areas where they lk nly briefly. Cnfident students quickly get t key prblem areas, while struggling nes ften lk aimlessly.
“Tracking eye mvements helps recgnize different learning strategies thrugh patterns and finally create detailed supprt reprts fr teachers,” says Maike Schindler. “The AI system srts the patterns. On the basis, the sftware selects tailred learning vides and exercises fr the pupil,” says rbtics prfessr Achim Lilienthal frm the TUM.
T develp the new eye-tracking technlgy, Prfessr Lilienthal has drawn n his rbtics research experience. In that wrk, he used eye trackers with a small human-like rbt named Na. It enables better cmmunicatin with humans. Hwever, these advanced systems with high accuracy cst many thusands f eurs.
T find a better slutin fr schls, the researchers cleverly mix technical experience with math knwledge. Instead f using high-end eye-trackers, their AI-driven apprach uses regular webcams and makes up fr lw accuracy thrugh AI imprvements. “By fcusing n prblem areas, the AI adapts the eye-tracking with the webcam, achieving accuracy cmparable t high-end tls,” prfessr Lilienthal says.
Germany’s Wulfen Cmprehensive Schl is the first t intrduce the system. A math test there shwed that abut ne-third f the new students struggled with basic math. With the AI system, ne teacher can nw supprt five students at nce — a significant imprvement ver traditinal ne-n-ne teaching. “As educatin faces teacher shrtages and increasing pressure t deal with individual learning styles, ur system fr prmting basic math skills is simply excellent supprt fr schls,” says Schindler.
      8. What is the functin f the heat map?
      A. Presenting students’ fcus areas.
      B. Measuring the difficulty f math tasks.
      C. Tracking the eye mvements f students.
      D. Cmparing students’ prblem-slving speeds.
      9. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
      A. The system’s advantages in recgnizing eye prblems.
      B. The system’s rle in supprting persnalized learning.
      C. The system’s challenges in tracking student behavir.
      D. The system’s prgress in upgrading specific patterns.
      10. Which best describes the AI-driven eye-tracking technlgy?
      A. Helpful but slw.B. Simple and relaxing.
      C. Creative but cstly.D. Affrdable and effective.
      11. What des Wulfen Cmprehensive Schl get frm the system?

“One issue that hasn’t really been examined much is what happens in the here and nw — are we happier spending ur mney n an experience r n a material item?” says Amit Kumar, assistant prfessr f marketing at the University f Texas at Austin. “The basic finding frm a lt f experiments is that peple gain mre happiness frm their experiences than frm their pssessins.”
The researchers rganized 2,635 adults and randmly assigned them t a material r experiential grup. The participants received randm texts during the day t mnitr their emtins and their purchasing behavir.
Material purchasers bught things such as jewelry, clthing, r furniture; Experiential shppers attended sprting events, dined at restaurants, r engaged in ther experiences.
The results: Happiness was higher fr participants wh cnsumed experiential purchases versus material nes in every kind, regardless f the cst f the item.
“It wuld be unfair t cmpare a shirt t a trip, but when we explain the reasn fr price, we still see this result where experiences are assciated with mre happiness,” Kumar says.
T address pssible differences in types f cnsumers, the researchers cnducted a secnd study in which they asked mre than 5,000 participants t first rate their happiness and then reprt whether they had used, enjyed, r cnsumed either a material r experiential purchase within the past hur. If they respnded “yes”, researchers asked participants a series f questins and details abut their purchase.
“We still bserved the same effect,” Kumar says. “When the very same persn was cnsuming an experience, that was assciated with mre happiness.”
The researchers cncluded that peple are happier with experiential purchases ver material nes irrespective f when yu measure happiness: befre, during, r after cnsumptin. Experiences als bring mre satisfactin even thugh peple typically spend mre time using their material pssessins.
The researchers say a pssible explanatin is the endurance f experiences in peple’s memries, while the perceived value f material gds weakens ver time.
      12. Why was the secnd experiment cnducted?
      A. T expect a different result.B. T have subjects f mre varieties.
      C. T balance the tw grups.D. T have mre experiential purchasers.
      13. What d the tw experiments want t prve?
      A. Experiences supply mre happiness.
      B. Material pssessins bring mre happiness.
      C. Tw experiments shw different results.
      D. Believable results cme frm mre repetitins.
      14. What is the pssible reasn fr the result?
      A. Happiness frm material pssessins never stay in the memries.
      B. Material pssessins can create much less happiness in the mind.
      C. Happiness frm experiential purchases lasts lnger in the memries.
      D. Experiential purchases can prbably create happiness mre quickly.
      15. What is the mst suitable title fr the text?
      A. Wider Experiences, and mre Happiness fr Yu.
