Dear Anxius Bunny,
I fully understand hw debilitating it can feel 1 (be) aware f the wrk yu need t d but simply nt be able t find the mtivatin t get started. I als understand the feelings f shame and guilt 2 ften accmpany this internal cnflict. But befre I give yu any practical advice r strategies t deal with yur stress, I want t emphasize the imprtance f nt beating yurself up fr letting yur wrk pile up; negative self-talk is nly ging t increase yur anxiety.
Yu wuldn’t be human 3 yu didn’t feel a lack f mtivatin at times. When yu feel demtivated, try taking a small step in the right directin by chsing any ne f the tasks yu need t finish and starting wrking n it, 4 yur feelings.
This may sund redundant, but fighting the impulse t nt get started because f yur lack f mtivatin 5 be exactly what yu need t d in rder t find mtivatin. Once yu start cmpleting a task that yu 6 (put ff) fr days r even weeks, there’s a fair chance that yu’ll realize it didn’t even take yu that lng t cmplete. Then yu can use that experience as evidence that yu’re able t cmplete yur tasks by simply chsing t get started instead f giving in t yur lack f mtivatin.
This is easier said than dne, but I find breaking dwn wrk int small parts rather than attempting t tackle 7 all at nce helps t ease yur anxiety and stress. If yu’d prefer a mre uncnventinal strategy, try taking a 15-minute walk, whether it utside r just arund yur huse. Many dctrs believe 8 this exercise may bst flwing t yur brain, which can help yu calm yur nerves and clear yur head s that yu’ll feel ready t get dwn t ding yur wrk.
But if there seems t be 9 nging prblem with yur mtivatin, and yu feel verwhelmed t the pint where yu struggle t get ut f bed r keep a regular eating schedule, it may be time t seek help frm a mental health prfessinal. Als, dn’t hesitate t reach ut t yur teachers fr help. 10 (priritize) yur mental health is a crucial part f yur ability t be the best student yu can be. Take care f yurself, Anxius Bunny.

We lve sad sngs
Researchers have previusly fund that sad music might cause us t feel mved in an emtinally psitive way, perhaps thrugh experiencing empathy r appreciating the artistry f the piece. Nw, a study has fund we might simply find pleasure in feeling the sadness such music evkes.
“I guess part f being human is that we just can’t cpe with the idea that there’s smething strangely 11 abut negative emtin,” says Emery Schubert at the University f New Suth Wales in Australia. “But what abut peple wh actually just say: ‘Well, the reasn I really lve this piece f music is because it makes me sad’? Wh’s t say that they’re wrng?”
Schubert asked 50 peple — mstly undergraduate music students — t think abut a piece f music they lve but cnsider sad, which included cmpsitins by Beethven and Taylr Swift. They then answered an nline questinnaire abut the 12 they felt while listening t that piece.
Next, participants were asked t try t imagine that the sadness in their selected piece f music culd smehw be remved. Overall, the participants said this made them 13 it less, with 82 per cent reprting that the sadness added t their enjyment.
In anther part f the experiment, Schubert asked a separate 53 peple — again, mstly undergraduate music students — t identify a piece f music they lve and cnsider “mving”. These participants widely reprted feeling sad while listening t the piece, despite 14 it.
It is pssible that the participants are 15 the emtins f being “sad” and “mved”, thereby experiencing a direct link between sadness and verall pleasure, says Schubert. They might even be using the wrds “sadness” and “mving” t describe the same, r a clsely 16 , feeling, he says.
But Jnna Vuskski at the University f Osl in Nrway says the sadness expressed by an artist may trigger the feeling f being mved if the listener experiences 17 . Peple may als relate t the lyrics f sad sngs, helping them t feel less alne in what they are ging thrugh and stpping them frm 18 up their emtins.
Vuskski als questins whether the participants culd truly imagine remving sadness frm a sng withut als taking away the 19 f feeling mved. Therefre it may be n wnder that they then imagined enjying the music less, she says.
Tumas Eerla at Durham University in the UK dubts peple culd “remve” sadness frm what is generally cnsidered a sad sng. “The whle study 20 n an assumptin that listeners are capable f perfect dissectin (剥离) f their emtinal causes frm each ther cncerning their lved music,” says Eerla, wh smetimes cllabrates with Schubert, but wasn’t invlved in this research.

We knw smene wh fits the descriptin. Yu prbably wrk with ne; yu might even be related t ne. And with Christmas appraching, the seasn f ffice parties and family gatherings yu’re increasingly likely t have t 21 with them and rediscver just hw annying they are. I’m talking abut knw-it-alls, peple wh will enthusiastically 22 yu abut a tpic r activity, despite bviusly having little t n knwledge in what they’re talking abut - and ften when yu d.
Why wuld sme peple assume 23 knwledge t thers, abut every pssible subject? One is the phenmenn f “naive realism” (direct realism r cmmn sense realism), which describes hw peple instinctively assume that their 24 f the wrld reflect bjective reality. In actuality, everything we perceive and “knw” abut the wrld has been filtered thrugh a cmplex mesh (筛网) f cgnitive biases, sensry shrtcuts, shifting emtinal memries and mre. What we think is reality in ur heads is ften nticeably 25 the actual reality, but we dn’t recgnize this happening. As a result, we regularly encunter peple whse understanding f the wrld is very different t ur wn. But naive realism means we assume that thse wh understand the wrld differently are 26 . Fr a seemingly large number f peple, this results in an irresistible urge t “crrect” thers. It may spring frm entirely gd intentins, but that desn’t make it any less 27 .
This can be the full stry, 28 , as cuntless peple believe thers are wrng, yet never d r say anything abut it. Anther ptential cgnitive bias 29 , prpsed in a recent study by Prf Hunter Gehlbach, Dr Carly D Rbinsn and Prf Annette Flerch, published in the jurnal PLS ONE, is the illusin (幻觉) f infrmatin adequacy. Put simply, this describes hw, despite lacking sufficient infrmatin t make crrect judgements abut smething, many peple will assume the 30 . It’s lgically very hard t recgnize and take accunt f what we dn’t knw.
A(n) 31 f the illusin f infrmatin adequacy and naive realism can lead t peple believing they knw mre than they really d. In their minds, this knwledge is mre advanced than that f thers and they must hurry t crrect it
Then there’s ur ld friend, the Dunning-Kruger effect: the cgnitive bias where peple with limited cmpetence in a certain area tend t 32 their abilities. Their lack f intellectual insight means they 33 t recgnize when smene else knws mre than them, they’ll cnfidently argue with thse wh are better infrmed. And because peple ften respnd mre t cnfidence than 34 , they usually get away with it. If this happens ften enugh, they culd cnvince themselves that they’re 35 n pretty much everything, even thugh the ppsite is true.

Are smarter kids smart enugh t avid alchl and drugs? Fr decades, scientists had dcumented that thse with lwer IQ and less educatin were mre likely t becme 11 t alchl r ther drugs, prbably because lwer levels f educatin and lwer IQ are assciated with the 12 effects f pverty and because having less intelligence ffers fewer mental resurces t allw users t mderate and avid prblems.
The latest data, published in Alchlism: Clinical and Experimental Research, desn’t cntradict thse findings. Drug use is nt the same as drug addictin — higher intelligence is a 13 factr against alchlism and addictins; nevertheless, smarter peple are mre likely t drink r try drugs. Scial drinking in many cuntries and nn-prblematic drinking is mre 14 and cmmn amng peple with higher educatin. But why? What prtects them frm 15 int addictin?
Intelligence can serve as a vehicle fr mderatin when it cmes t alchl r drug use — the mre 16 peple are, the mre they internalize and appreciate the dangers and risks f indulgence (放纵).
Intelligence can als encurage mre curisity and 17 t new experiences. And that includes 18 with alchl and drugs. Peple have the impressin that intelligence is smehw related t being intrverted and bkish, but large studies 19 find that intelligence is assciated with sensatin-seeking and seeking different kinds f experiences, including learning new things. It culd be related t the nature f intelligence.
