At night, I think abut my mther and hpe she’s asleep. She lives alne in the little twn f Glden, Clrad, in a huse high up n a hill. I’m ut in L. A., s there’s nt much I can d — except wrry. I remember there was a little Chinese restaurant in the twn. S I dialed Infrmatin and asked the peratr t search the Glden listings fr Chinese restaurants. But the peratr tld me he needed an actual name. I kept that peratr n the line, inventing dzens f listings fr him t check. It’s incredible that the peratr didn’t discnnect me. I finally hit n the right name: Glden Peach.
I went ahead and paid the extra charge fr the peratr t cnnect me, and I rdered the sup, plus egg rlls and stir-fried vegetables. It was an entire Chinese banquet (宴会) fr ne tiny lady. With the snw piling up, I figured she culd use the leftvers, plus at that pint I guess I was srt f hungry myself. I charged the whle rder t my credit card, including a tip t the delivery guy. Then I just sat back, feeling pleased with myself, and waited fr my phne t ring.
I glanced at my watch. I wrried Mm might have fallen asleep. But I didn’t think the delivery guy’s arrival wuld scare this little ld lady. I nly thught abut hw surprised my mm was ging t be. I wished I culd see the lk n her face.

In the crwded center f ur schl, where the chatter f students filled the air, ne individual std ut—my deaf classmate, Alex. His wrld was a silent canvas, shaped by the gestures f sign language, a language he knew prfundly, and ne that I was eager t explre. Despite the lively envirnment, Alex mved thrugh his day with a quiet grace, his hands gesturing smthly as he cmmunicated with thse wh understd him. Hwever, fr many f us, his gestures were a mystery, creating an invisible barrier between him and the rest f the student bdy.
This barrier became strikingly apparent when I nticed hw effrtlessly Alex interacted with the few students and teachers fluent in sign language. With them, he was a different persn—cnfident, expressive, and fully engaged. The transfrmatin was remarkable; the barrier that seemed s verwhelming with us was nn-existent with them. He laughed mre and participated mre. It was clear that in thse mments, Alex was nt just surviving in a silent wrld but thriving in a language that allwed him t be his true self.
I remember the first time I saw him struggle t cmmunicate with us. We were in the cafeteria, and Alex was trying t explain smething imprtant. His eyes were searching fr understanding, his hands tracing patterns in the air that were lst n us. The frustratin n his face was evident, and the helplessness we all felt was equally disheartening. Simple tasks, like asking fr directins r participating in grup discussins, became significant challenges fr Alex. He ften had t rely n written ntes r the limited knwledge f sign language that a few f ur classmates pssessed.
These daily struggles were a cnstant reminder f the cmmunicatin barrier that existed. It was during ne particularly difficult grup prject that the reality hit me hard. Alex had brilliant ideas, but cnveying them was a painstaking prcess. His eyes wuld light up with enthusiasm, nly t fade with disappintment when we culdn’t understand his signs.

The explding mment came during their final practice. During the barn scene, Liam suddenly hwled like a wlf. The yunger students laughed ludly. Jasn was s mad that he ran ff the stage — and crashed right int the wden chairs, breaking three f them.
