Histry is written, read, tld — but rarely ever is it smelled.
Histrians and scientists acrss Eurpe have nw gtten tgether with perfumers(调香师)and museums fr a unique prject: t reveal what Eurpe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries. A Eurpean street tday may smell like cffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes. But what did it smell like hundreds f years ag? As part f this three-year-lng prject called “Odeurpa”, the researchers want t find all the ld scents(气味)f Eurpe — and even recreate sme f this ancient smellscape: frm the dry tbacc scents t the smelly canals.
T d this, they will first build artificial intelligence (AI) that will be trained t g thrugh histrical texts, written in seven different languages, fr any descriptins f scents. The AI will als be trained t detect images f bjects in the texts that might be scented. The team will then use this infrmatin t create an nline encyclpedia(百科全书)f smells frm Eurpe’s past.
The encyclpedia will include the meaning f certain scents and will trace the stries behind scents, places and related practices, accrding t prject leader Angela Lee. “This database will becme a library fr the smell heritage f Eurpe, enabling future generatins t access and learn abut the scented past.” The encyclpedia will als include descriptins f peple fr whm smell was imprtant.
The researchers will then wrk with chemists and perfume makers t recreate past smells and figure ut hw t display the smells in museums and ther histrical sites. With current technlgy, almst every scent can be prduced. “The mre difficult part f the prject will be t find descriptins f scents, because peple haven’t always talked r written abut them,” Lee said.
Scent plays a central rle in ur everyday life, even acting as a pwerful time machine int ur wn past with its ability t activate lng-frgtten memries. But it’s als a key tl in telling the stries f thers. “Scent gives us access t the past in a much mre direct and emtinal way than language and images,” Lee said.
8.Why did the researchers start the “Odeurpa” prject?
A.T rebuild a histrical Eurpean street.
B.T make perfumes f traditinal scents.
C.T find and recreate the smells f Eurpe.
D.T reprduce the scented past f Eurpe.
9.What will the AI d in the prject?
      A.Cllect smell-related data.

      C.Detect bjects by smell.
      D.Describe smells in different languages.
10.Which f the fllwing is the biggest challenge the prject faces?

B.Recrds f scents are rarely fund.
C.Technlgy t reprduce scents is pr.
D.Display f smells in museums csts a lt.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly abut?

      C.The rle f scent in stry-telling.
      D.The value f understanding scent.
As new technlgies take n increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push t make them genderless. “Peple are steretyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered bjects in very traditinal ways,” says Ashley Martin, a Stanfrd assciate prfessr f rganizatinal behavir. Remving gender frm the picture altgether seems like a simple way t fix this. Yet as Martin has fund in her wrk, gender is ne f the fundamental ways peple frm cnnectins with bjects, particularly thse designed with human characteristics.
In her study, Martin asked participants t rate their attachment t male, female, and genderless versins f a digital vice assistant and a self-driving car knwn as “Miuu.” It was fund that gender increased users’ feelings f attachment t these devices and their interest in purchasing them. Fr example, participants said they wuld be less likely t buy a genderless vice assistant than versins with male r female vices.
While gendering a prduct may be gd marketing, it may als strengthen utdated r harmful ideas abut pwer and identity. The steretypes cmmnly assciated with men, such as cmpetitiveness and dminance, are mre valued than thse assciated with wmen. These qualities, in turn, are mapped nt prducts that have been assigned a gender.
Martin’s study als fund that creating a genderless bject was difficult. Fr instance, if an bject’s name was meant t sund genderless, like Miuu, participants wuld still assign a gender t it — they wuld assume Miuu was a “he” r “she.”
Martin sees a silver lining, hwever: She believes that anthrpmrphism (拟人化) “prvides an pprtunity t change steretypes.” When wmen are put int psitins f leadership like running cmpanies, it reduces negative steretypes abut wmen. Similarly, anthrpmrphized prducts culd be created t take n steretype-incnsistent rles — a male rbt that assists with nursing r a female rbt that helps d calculatins, fr instance.
12.What is the purpse f making new technlgies genderless?
A.T reduce steretypes.B.T meet public demand.
C.T cut prductin csts.D.T encurage cmpetitin.
13.What were the participants prbably asked t d in the study?
      A.Design a prduct.B.Respnd t a survey.
      C.Wrk as assistants.D.Take a language test.
14.Why is it difficult t create genderless bjects?
A.They cannt be mass-prduced.B.Naming them is a challenging task.
C.Peple assume they are unreliable.D.Gender is rted in peple’s mind.
15.What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
      A.The quality f genderless prducts.B.The upside f gendering a prduct.
      C.The meaning f anthrpmrphism.D.The steretypes f men and wmen.
