I first became interested in the Rubik’s Cube (魔方) when I was 13 because I wanted t use it in my magic trick rutine. I sn realized that if I really made an effrt. I culd slve the cube. I started watching vides that explained the algrithms (算法). I watched them every day and I became fascinated. 1 In 2019, Rubik’s Cube hired me as a brand ambassadr (大使), and I began making vide cntent fr them. Every jb I’ve ever had has been in sme way related t the skills I’ve acquired thrugh cubing. 2 It has als shwn me that success is ften the result f messing up.
As well as wrking as a brand ambassadr, I d Guinness Wrld Recrds t get recgnitin fr the cube. Fr the Guinness Wrld Recrd at the Lndn Marathn in 2024, Rubik’s sent me 600 cubes, which my friends scrambled (打乱). The cubes were then put int bags. During the race, I had tw bags n my frnt: ne fr the scrambled cubes and the ther fr the slved cubes. 3 I had peple waiting at checkpints every tw miles t exchange bags with me and give me 50 scrambled cubes in return fr the 50 I had slved. This meant I was carrying ten kils f cubes with me fr the entire race. 4 In this way, everything was dcumented and then cnfirmed by Guinness Wrld Recrds t make it fficial.
5 We’re nt cmpeting against each ther, but against urselves. In 2024, I beat my quickest slving time f 3.31 secnds, reducing it t 3.25 secnds. It was a great feeling! I believe anyne can slve the cube — it’s just a questin f hard wrk and putting in the time.
A.It has taught me hard wrk and prblem-slving.
B.I managed t slve 520 cubes while I was running.
C.Abut a year later, I wn my first UK champin title.
D.I als had a camera n my head t film myself slving.
E.T keep my mind sharp, I ran 100 kilmetres per week.
F.The thing I like mst abut cubing is the inclusive cmmunity.
G.This is necessary, as I regularly travel t cmpetitins arund the wrld.

It was a winter mrning when I received a package with n return address. The plain brwn wrapping gave n clues, and my name was handwritten in shaky letters. 1
Inside was a small wden bx, its surface carved with intricate patterns f vines and birds. I lifted the lid. A faint scent f cedar (雪松) filled the air. 2 It was my grandmther’s brch (胸针) — the ne she always wre t Sunday dinners, with a single pearl suspended like a dewdrp. She had passed away three mnths earlier, and the family assumed the jewelry had been lst in the chas f her estate.
My hands trembled as I picked it up. 3 The weight f the brch in my palm felt like a cnnectin t a past I had been neglecting. Then I nticed a slip f paper tucked beneath the velvet lining. The handwriting matched the package: “Fr the girl wh lved listening t stries under the ld ak tree. Keep this clse when yu write yurs.”
4 Only Grandma called me that during ur summer visits. I hadn’t seen her in tw years befre her death — t busy with schl and friends t visit. Guilt washed ver me like a tide. Hw easily life’s distractins can pull us away frm what truly matters.
That evening, I examined the brch under lamplight. 5 The year Grandma and I had spent afternns recrding made-up tales abut the birds in her garden. I sat there, tears blurring my visin, as I remembered thse carefree days. Frm that mment n, I vwed never t let life’s busyness vershadw the simple jys f family and cnnectin.
A.A glimmer f silver caught my eye.
B.The nickname “Strybird” leaped ut at me.
C.The pstmark shwed a twn 200 miles away.

Think back t smething yu lved ding as a child r teenager. 1 Back then, these ld passins felt like a cre part f wh yu were. But as life became busier, thse activities slipped int the backgrund. Here’s my stry abut smething I lved — playing the vilin — and hw I let it g.
Whenever I have t share my hbbies in an icebreaker, I hesitate t mentin the vilin. But actually it wasn’t just a casual hbby fr me. I spent hurs practicing, preparing fr cncerts, and puring my heart int it. 2 I tld myself I’d fcus n exams, then n university, then my career. Nw, years later, I realize I haven’t tuched the vilin in what feels like a lifetime.
I ask myself: If I never play again, what will I really lse? My high schl teacher, Ms. Gulen, had an answer t this questin: “Pursue (追求) yur hbbies and interests because they’ll give yu a stry t tell.” 3 Stries matter. And ld passins are stries yu can tell abut wh yu are, and wh yu have been.
In my wrk nw, I study hw peple cmprehend their lives thrugh the stries they tell. 4 Peple wh feel cnnected t their persnal stries — wh understand hw their past experiences influence their current lives — tend t feel mre mtivated, purpseful, and cnsistent with their values.
5 It cnnected me t music, t creativity, and t the friendships I built thrugh shared passin. Being “the girl wh played the vilin” gave me smething different, smething uniquely mine. Even thugh I haven’t played in years, that part f my identity still feels imprtant.
A.Then life gt in the way.
B.I can’t agree mre with that.
C.A hbby r creative pursuit brught yu jy.
D.Fr me, playing the vilin was a key part f that stry.
E.Maybe it was playing an instrument, painting, r sccer.
F.Hwever, I fund peple didn’t take it seriusly anyway.
G.These stries play a significant rle in their sense f well-being.

T put int wrds my time in Antarctica and Suth Gergia is nearly impssible. I had always described it as a nce-in-a-lifetime experience. 1 I was nt the nly ne wh felt this way. Abut 50% f the passengers f ur expeditin had been t Antarctica at least nce befre. This ges t shw just hw magical the destinatin is.
2 Hw tiny yu feel next t twering glaciers and icebergs. The blinding white blankets everything, blurring the bundary between land and cean. The icy water mves thrugh yur bdy as yu take the Plar Plunge. The slemn silence calms yur restlessness and reminds yu f heart-tuching stries f survival frm explrers f the past. The list ges n.
Antarctica makes yu feel s small and insignificant, in the best way. Everything has a purpse, and the cycle f life is evident. Yu get frnt rw seats t witness the mst incredible shw: nature. 3 Fr example, when yu see a brwn skua (贼鸥) attacking a penguin chick, yur heart aches. Then yur expeditin guide regretfully tells yu that a chick that is small in March wuld have very slim chances f surviving the upcming winter. 4
Things mve fast here, every mnth ffering smething unique and special t see. In March, the weather is a bit mre unpredictable, and the sea ice is beginning t frm again. Our vyage was the last f the seasn. In tw mre weeks, expeditin ships wuld nt be able t break thrugh the ice. The penguins are cmpleting their yearly feather-changing prcess. They are really weak during this time, and cannt dive. 5
These animals, arguably the cutest yu will ever see, survive such unfavrable envirnments. It’s abslutely incredible t witness the challenges, the skill, the effrts, all f it. I am frever grateful t have been a visitr.
A.But that is nt hw it is.
B.It is as much cruel as beautiful.
C.I, years later, did return t this fascinating place.
D.The cycle cntinues, and yu’ re left wndering wh t supprt.
E.That all yur senses will be stimulated is the best way I can describe it.
      F.But immediately I stepped ft n the cntinent, I knew I needed t return.
G.The expeditin team made sure we kept ur distance and did nt scare them.

After enthusiastic recmmendatin frm many friends, I finally made it t Srrent, a castal twn facing the Bay f Naples in suthwestern Italy. 1 That’s because I heard varius versins f the sng "Cme back t Srrent”.
The twn is, deservedly, extremely ppular fr weddings. 2 Many brides chse t have a pht taken verlking the magnificent bay f Naples, with the veil(面纱)dancing in the sea breeze. Smetimes there’s even a queue fr the best spt.
Perhaps the mst sensuus(愉悦感官的)memry I have f Srrent is f their lemns. The fruits prvide the raw materials fr that amazing lemn sap n sale everywhere and, even better, fr the delicius Limncell liqueur. 3
4 The seafd dishes were particularly utstanding, with the catch f the day being served in a variety f ways, frm grilled t fried t baked. One f my favrite dishes was the spaghetti alle vngle, which was cked t perfectin and had just the right amunt f garlic and chili flakes.
The twn f Srrent has its wn art galleries and museums, which are all well wrth a visit. 5 Naples, Pmpeii and Herculaneum, which are all within easy reach by rad r rail, and Capri and Ischia are just a bat trip away.
I spent tw weeks in Srrent and still did nt see everything the twn has t ffer. I definitely must return t Srrent sn.
A.The twn draws numerus turists every year.
B.Hwever, its main attractin lies in the cultural relics.
C.And a sense f nn-stp celebratin has thus been created.
D.The name itself had been firmly fixed in my mind since childhd.
E.Smetimes they are als prvided fr free after a restaurant meal.
F.N trip t Srrent wuld be cmplete withut enjying the famus dishes.
G.But perhaps the greatest advantage is its clseness t the majr histrical sites.

My first year living in Lndn was like an adventure. 1 Althugh I did a lt f advanced research befre we arrived, there are sme lessns I learned nly after mving t Lndn.
There are few things in life I lve mre than pancakes. 2 The first time I rdered pancakes in Lndn, they brught ut these tiny and flat pancakes with cream n tp. I was really shcked t see these pancakes. After that shcking experience, I began t find the best American-style pancakes in Lndn.
Of all the things I gave up t mve t Lndn, driving was the thing I missed the least. As smene wh used t drive hundreds f miles a mnth fr wrk, I was very delighted t exchange cars fr walking and public transit. 3 We can be in central Lndn in 20 minutes withut wrrying abut parking fares.
I’ll never frget the first time I went int central Lndn in August. I was meeting my husband fr lunch, and it was ht. As I walked twards St. Paul’s Cathedral, I realized there were turists everywhere! 4 But August was cmpletely verpwering (压倒性的). S remember t avid the city center in August.
5 With dzens f museums, theaters, pp-ups, markets, and festivals, yu culd d smething new every night f the week fr years n end. Unfrtunately, having 1,000,000 chices f hw t spend yur free time usually results in analysis paralysis (瘫痪). S I have a list f things t d when we have free time.
A.Lndn starts getting crwded in June and July.
      B.There are a prfund amunt f things t d in Lndn.
C.It’s incredible hw much I’ve learned in 12 shrt mnths.
D.In sme ways, there are n differences between Eurpe and the US.
E.Sadly, the breakfast fun in Eurpe and the US is nt n the same page.
F.There’s a sense f freedm that cmes with living in a well-cnnected city.

As an enthusiastic reader, I’ve always believed that the key t understanding the wrld lies in the pages f a bk. 1 They intrduce us t characters wh feel as real as the peple arund us. This cnnectin between readers and the text is what makes literature s pwerful, and it’s why I value my persnal library. It’s a cllectin that reflects my jurney thrugh the wrld f wrds.
My library is nt vast, but each bk is carefully chsen. I have a mix f types in my cllectin, ranging frm classic literature t cntemprary fictin. 2 Each type ffers a different perspective, a new way f lking at life. While sme bks challenge my thinking, thers prvide cmfrt. It’s imprtant t have a balance. A well-rganized library is like a well-balanced diet fr the mind.
Amng my favurites are the wrks f Jane Austen and Gerge Orwell. Austen's sharp bservatins n sciety and relatinships are timeless. Her characters are imperfect yet charming. Orwell, n the ther hand, ffers a stark (冷峻的) view f the wrld. 3 Bth authrs, thugh different in style, have taught me invaluable lessns abut humanity.
4 Bigraphies (传记) and life stries ffer insights int the lives f extrardinary individuals. They remind us that greatness cmes in many frms. Reading abut the struggles and successes f thers can be incredibly inspiring. It’s a reminder that we all have the ptential t make a difference. These stries encurage me t reflect n my wn life and what I wish t leave behind.
My library is a reflectin f wh I am. It’s a sign f my lve f learning and my desire t understand the wrld. Each bk is a stepping stne n my jurney f discvery. They are cmpanins in lneliness and guides in times f uncertainty. 5
      A.I als enjy nn-fictin.
B.I believe in the pwer f variety.
C.My library ges beynd a cllectin f bks.
D.His stries are a warning and a call t actin.
      E.Thrugh them, I cntinue t explre, t grw, and t dream.
F.The stries we read shape ur wrld view and braden ur minds.

I gt afraid when I was ging t jin Thmpsn Rivers University (TRU) here in Canada. The fact was that I was far away frm my cuntry with a ttally new culture and new peple and I became nervus because I had n experience f getting adjusted with a whle new place, language and culture. 1 Speaking English fluently and maintaining my cnfidence when chatting with each persn here psed anther fr me.
Befre I landed in Canada, I had knwn I wuld face a lt f prblems. 2 It happened especially when it came t figuring ut hw t fix it r make the necessary adjustments here. I wasn’t able t cmmunicate with peple s easily because the accent here in Canada wasn’t familiar t me. 3 That directly cntributed t my hesitatin in talking with peple arund me. Besides, the fear f making mistakes was killing my desire t give it anther try.
T break thrugh these difficulties, I realized that I had t actively engage with the lcal envirnment and the diverse cmmunity arund me. When I first came t TRU, I met with natinal and internatinal students, talked t them abut ur culture, like hw ur interactins happened, the way we cmmunicated, and the traditins we were keeping. I started t bserve peple, including hw they talked, their expressins, intnatin, stress, vcabulary, and the way they used phrases in cnversatins. I als started t talk with my friends in English. 4 I persisted increasingly t gradually adapt t and feel at ease with the new language, culture, traditin and all the aspects that required my adjustments.
5 Nthing is impssible t achieve. All yu need t d t achieve a gal is hard wrk, practice and nt feeling shy when yu’re making a mistake. I am learning a lt by making lts f mistakes. Nw mistakes dn’t bther me anyway.

I hated writing in the prcess f grwing up. But I culdn’t avid it. Learning English was a must in high schl. Fr hurs, I stared at blank pages, trying t turn my disrganized thughts int fluent sentences. I tried my best but my teachers wuld return my papers littered with red. I was frustrated all the time. 1 And that was OK. I didn’t have t be gd at everything.
2 I liked the bjective truths that culd be fund if I searched prperly. In cllege, I jined a research lab t enhance cnductr efficiency, and after a year f hard wrk, we develped a design effrtlessly. Hwever, the jy was shrt-lived as I had t write a research paper abut ur findings.
I knew that if I wanted t becme an academic, I wuld need t spend time penning papers. But with my awful track recrd with writing, I was scared f failing. In panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab fr help. We defined a gal fr the paper, and I carefully wrte an utline. But when I asked him fr feedback, I sn fund the paper cvered in red marks. 3
Befre I culd give up in defeat, thugh, the graduate student explained thse red marks didn’t mean I was a bad writer. 4 It requires revising yur wrk, ften several times. I kept imprving the utline f my paper, eventually turning it int sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. I had buried a few key takeaways, and the intrductin was missing imprtant cntext. But with help, I finally made it.
Frm then n, writing became ne f my favrite parts f research. 5 But I came arund. All it tk was sme trial and errr.

2 After cnsidering my strengths and weaknesses in my schl subjects and the STEM (science, technlgy, engineering, and math) path, I decided that I wanted t get in t a math, science, and technlgy prgram. I became fierce and fcused n that ne gal.

Orienteering is a timed event acrss a mstly natural landscape, where participants navigate thrugh a series f checkpints alng the way. The rute frm ne checkpint t the next isn’t marked. 1 Beynd mere exercise, rienteering builds physical endurance and mental sharpness, with each mve requiring split-secnd judgement.
At the age f ten my family mved t a new twn and I changed t a new schl. In my new class there was an rienteer and I jined him in the practices. Nw 50 years later, I still d rienteering!
I have always enjyed nature. Grwing up in a village n the frest’s edge, I spent my childhd in nature, playing, walking, and skiing. 2
