“I am s srry,” I tearfully said t my principal investigatr (PI), explaining I wuld nt be able t return t wrk as riginally planned. Befre I became a parent, I had assumed a baby wuld fit right int my academic plans. But nw, as the end f my leave apprached, I realized I culdn’t simply carry n as I always had. I was wrried this decisin might signal the end f my academic career — but I felt I had n ther chice.
Thankfully, my PI had mre fresight. He tld me I didn’t need t resign and that he culd ffer me a cntract that wuld allw me t cntribute t ur prject frm afar. It prved t be an abslute career lifeline tailred t me.
Then five years after stepping back frm academia, I felt ready t re-enter mre fully. Because I had been able t keep my hand in during my time away, the prspect was much less daunting than it wuld have been therwise. I ended up landing a lecturer psitin that allwed me t slwly ease back in, fcusing n teaching and schlarship with research taking a back seat. And when, 4 years n, a senir lectureship psitin came up in the very grup I had left a decade earlier, the timing was right. With bth f my children in “big schl”, I was ready t really put my ft dwn n the career acceleratr. I gt the jb.
Nw, 6 mnths int my new rle, I am happy t be right where it all began, with invlvement in s many interesting prjects. But what truly made the difference fr me was the ffer f what I needed during that time away. I hpe mre institutins and PIs can cme up with creative prvisins (条款) fr thse in their wrkfrce wh dn’t want t give up their careers but want-r-need t take extended perids f leave. And t thse wh are taking such breaks, r cnsidering it, knw that returning is pssible. Abve all, n bth sides: Please d nt discunt extended leavers. We have a lt t ffer — if we are given the chance.

“Frm wearing silly clthes t hlding funny ceremnies, such seemingly bizarre rituals (仪式) can be seen everywhere, and mst f them d nt seem t serve any bvius purpse,” Dimitris Xygalatas writes at the beginning f his new bk Rituals: Hw Seemingly Senseless Acts Make Life Wrth Living.
Then why are humans still in lve with such rituals?
Sme f them are intended t unify the participants. The gse steps practised by the sldiers all arund the wrld area great example. When we all perfrm the same actins in a predictable way, as rituals ften require, it can create a sense f tgetherness and cperatin, which maybe a matter f life and death in the face f danger.
Many rituals riginated when humans started living in ever bigger grups, which expsed them t all kinds f vilence, disasters and diseases. T prevent such risks frm ccurring, humans created varius rituals. In regins where vilence was cmmn and the threat f disaster and disease was high, scieties tended t emphasize strict ritualized behavirs, such as bdy-washing and sexual purity. Of curse, nt all f them were effective because they didn’t always understand what was causing the risks they were trying t cntrl.
Mst f the rituals just prvide psychlgical cmfrt. Earlier this mnth, peple arund the wrld participated in ne f humankind’s largest gathering t celebrate the New Year. The rituals included firewrks, gifts as well as sme practices unique t specific cultures, such as cking black-eyed peas and greens in the sutheastern United States, r eating a grape with each midnight clck strike in Spain. In the face f uncertainty, such rituals give the participants sme kind f cntrl, which helps bst cnfidence and reduce anxiety.
Hwever, the variety f rituals can als separate peple, particularly when the valued practices f ne culture strike anther as strange and can nt be clearly explained. “S here’s the surprising lessn we have t learn frm such seemingly senseless rituals: D in Rme as the Rmans d since wrking isn’t the real pint,” cncludes Dimitris Xygalatas.
      8. What des the underlined wrd “bizarre” in paragraph 1 mean?
      A. Difficult.B. Strange.C. Wnderful.D. Effective.
      9. Which ritual just prvides psychlgical cmfrt?
      A. Stressing pure sexual relatinship.B. Practising gse steps in the army.
      C. Eating grapes n New Year’s Eve.D. Washing hands befre religius rituals.
      10. What is Dimitris Xygalatas’ advice cncerning the rituals?
      A. Respecting them.B. Just fllwing the effective nes.
      C. Reducing the variety.D. Intrducing better replacements.
      11. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
      A. T argue against Dimitris Xygalatas.B. T review a recently published bk.
      C. T shw the side effects f sme rituals.D. T explain the rigins and impacts f rituals.
      D
Rapid defrestatin (毁林) f the Amazn rainfrest culd influence the temperature and precipitatin (降水,降水量) ver the Tibetan plateau 15, 000 kilmeters away.
Saini Yang at Beijing Nrmal University in China and her clleagues analyzed glbal climatlgical data frm 1979 t 2019 t identify relatins in temperature and precipitatin between the Amazn rainfrest and ther areas. Such links are called “telecnnectin1s”. They fcused n the Amazn rainfrest in particular because f its significance as a majr carbn sink and as a climatic “tipping pint” (爆发点) that culd see frest turn t savannah (稀树草原) beynd a certain threshld (阈,界) f warming and human-driven defrestatin.
The researchers fund that since 1979, warm temperatures in the Amazn rainfrest were related t warm temperatures ver the Tibetan plateau and the West Antarctic ice sheet; mre precipitatin in the Amazn rainfrest was assciated with less precipitatin in thse regins. By analyzing changing temperatures in the regins between the Amazn rainfrest and thse distant areas, they were als able t trace the path thrugh which energy r materials such as black carbn released in frest fires might spread thrugh the atmsphere. Their analysis shwed the rute remained cnsistent under different future warming scenaris.
The cllapse f the West Antarctic ice sheet is a knwn tipping pint. Melting snw n the Tibetan plateau is nt, but the regin is warming mre rapidly than much f the rest f the glbe, and changes t snw and ice there culd have cnsequences fr ecsystems and the billins f peple that rely n its snwmelt fr water, says Yang.
Victr Brvkin at the Max Planck Institute fr Meterlgy in Germany says the telecnnectins are an interesting find, but is skeptical that variability in the Amazn rainfrest causes the changes elsewhere. He says the Amazn rainfrest is t small an area t vercme the influence f the trpical ceans and the researchers dn’t present a physical mechanism t explain any influence.
If the Amazn rainfrest des have an influence n these regins, hwever, it culd mean there is à higher risk that the Amazn rainfrest tipping pint might set thers ff, says Jnathan Dnges-at the Ptsdam Institute fr Climate Impact Research in Germany. “It adds an additinal ptential dmin (多米诺骨牌) that can fall. ”
      12. Why was the Amazn rainfrest the fcus fr Saini Yang’s research?
      A. Because it played a rle as a main carbn sink.
      B. Because it was the mst imprtant carbn sink.
      C. Because it was very likely t turn t savannah.
      D. Because it was at a high risk f becming a climatic “tipping pint”.
      13. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
      A. The benefits f the research.
      B. The findings f the research.
      C. The means f analyzing the data.
      D. The results f the Amazn rainfrest being defrested.
      14. Which f the fllwing pints may Saini Yang agree with?
      A. The temperature f the Tibetan plateau changes the fastest.
      B. The variability in the Amazn rainfrest may nt lead t changes elsewhere.
      C. The mre the Amazn rainfrest rains, the less rainfall the Tibetan plateau may have.
      D. The cnsequences f the cllapse f the West Antarctic ice sheet are little-knwn.
      15. What can we learn abut the Amazn rainfrest frm the last tw paragraphs?
      A. Telecnnectins have kept the researchers interested fr a lng time.
      B. The Amazn rainfrest tipping pint is likely t set ff thse f ther areas.
      C. The findings f the research n the Amazn rainfrest are cntrversial.
      D. The Amazn rainfrest is large enugh t remve the influence f the trpical ceans.
