Next year, the Ryal Hrticultural Sciety in England will shw ff an “intelligent garden”, the technical cmpnents f which are the prduct f a partnership between AI start-up Avande and Micrsft. When it is unveiled (揭幕), the garden will rely n a netwrk f sensrs fixed thrughut the garden measuring envirnmental factrs like sil cnditins and nutrient levels as well as wind and expected rainfall. All f that data is then sent t a specially designed AI mdel, which can then analyze thse factrs and infrm gardeners n prper feeding, watering, r cutting.
Gardeners aren’t the nly nes wh can interact with the garden. Visitrs t the Chelsea Flwer Shw will be able t walk up t virtual platfrms and ask the intelligence garden questins abut its current envirnmental state. The AI language mdule will then interpret the data and spit it back ut t the visitrs in a lgical, cnversatinal dialgue.
In thery, insights prvided by mdels like this ne culd help gardeners allcate (分配) resurces efficiently and avid ver-watering plants befre rainfall, bth f which can aid in sustainability effrts. It’s unclear, hwever, whether even the best mdels can accunt fr unusual situatins and individual plant tendencies with the same level f care as experienced gardeners.
Massey, the garden designer, wants t avid falling int the trap f making the AI garden feel verly artificial. Despite predictins that the Internet wuld kill it, the printed guidebk is prving hard-t-kill. They declared that it was dead-r, if it wasn’t dead yet, it sn wuld be. The cause f the pessimism was viral: first blgs, then influencers n Instagram and TikTk.
Frmmer’s, the grandfather f American guidebks, was sld in 2012 fr $22 millin t Ggle, which reprtedly planned t end the series’ print run. The fllwing year Arthur Frmmer, its funder, bught the cmpany back. Anther example, Lnely Planet, the best-knwn publisher, has been thrugh several wners at ever-lwer valuatins.
Yet, fr all jurnalists’ pr predictins, the guidebk is still rbust. Sales in Britain were mstly flat in 2014-2019, a perid when smartphnes became bth ppular and pwerful. In 2021, Americans bught 5.8 millin guidebks and maps-up frm 4 millin in 2020. Why d guidebks still rll ff the presses when all the infrmatin yu culd need is in yur pcket?
One answer is that print is a useful medium fr infrmatin n the g. Bks can be scribbled (写划) n and dg-eared; they need n charging r internet access. They can be easier t brwse than scial media, websites r e-bks. Anther is that guidebks have changed with the times. Rick Steves, the authr f America’s bestselling guides t Eurpean destinatins, published his first guidebk 44 years ag. He still persnally researches many f his bks, which ffer a lt f infrmatin in small type. His publishers, being mre business-minded, als prduce pcket guides, which take thse tips and enliven them with phtgraphs.
Yunger travellers are mre likely t rganize their wn plans, relying n digital resurces rather than bks. Artificial intelligence is anther challenge n the way. Like a gd guide, AI’s prmise is that it can d the bring research and prduce a summary. Frmmer’s, fr its part, experimented with using AI t ffer tailr-made answers t travellers’ questins, but fund that it was making things up t ften t be useful. Nthing makes a traveller reach fr their trusty guidebk mre than an impractical tip.
      12. What can we learn abut Frmmer’s and Lnely Planet?
      A. They’ re n lnger n sale.B. They’ re becming influential nline.
      C. They’ re infected with a deadly virus.D. They’ re facing a challenging situatin.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “rbust” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Strng.B. Dead.C. RichD. Fashinable.
      14. Which aspect f guidebks des paragraph 4 fcus n?
      A. Their authrs.B. Their advantages.C. Their materials.D. Their prducers.
      15. What des the authr mainly cnvey in the last paragraph?
      A. Guidebks remain reliable.B. The tips AI prvides are practical.
      C. Digital bks are mre prmising.D. AI answers travellers’ questins prperly.
