The inclusive cafe has made a real difference t peple’s lives. One f the staff, Lauren Oppelts, suffers frm

able t wrk at the cafe, but it turned ut that her sn’s perfrmance had gne beynd her expectatins.
But the cafe is much mre than just a wrkplace. Stank als wanted t create a space t cach life skills t

Scientists explring the cean flr in Antaretica have fund the largest grup f fish nests ever discvered.
The huge area f nests came as a surprise, and will help scientists develp a mre cmplete idea f the cean fd
      web in the area.
In the suth Weddell Sea, scientists discvered a grup f rughly 60 millin icefish nests n the cean flr.
Befre this, the largest grup f icefish nests ever fund had abut 60 nests. Researchers frm Germany’s Alfred
Wegener Institute n the research ship Plarstern were studying the cean flr in Antaretica. T d this, they used
a special device called OFOBS. The device cllects infrmatin and takes pictures and vide frm 5 — 8 feet (1.5

2.5meters) abve the sea flr. Lilian Behringer, a research student, was the first t spt the nests. “They were
everywhere,” she tld the New Yrk Times. During the first fur-hur filming sessin, the scientists fund ver
      6,000 nests.
The researchers used OFOBS t make tw mre fur-hur “dives”, trying t discver the limits f the nesting
      1
area. This allwed them t calculate that the nesting site cvers at least 92 square miles (240 square kilmeters).
The scientists were studying the area because the temperatures there are slightly warmer than the areas arund it.
The water is still cld — barely abve freezing — but that seems t be perfect fr icefish.
The nests scientists fund were in the shape f a circle, and abut 2.5 feet (75centimeters)acrss. Each nest
held abut 1,700 eggs. Mst f the nests were being guarded by a male icefish. Researchers als sptted sme dead
icefish and sme nests with n fish.
Because f the massive numbers f nests fund, the scientists believe the icefish must play a very imprtant
part in the cean’s fd cycle in the area. The researchers think the icefish are an imprtant fd surce fr
      Antarctica’s Weddell Seals.
      2

Fr centuries, explrers have searched fr the funtain f yuth. Surprisingly, the secret t staying yung
might have been within us all alng. Amr, a scientist, and clleagues have discvered that T cells can be
      reprgrammed t fight aging, s t speak.
Given the right genetic changes, these white bld cells can attack anther grup f cells knwn as senescent
(衰老的) cells, which are thught t be respnsible fr many f the diseases we fight with later in life. Senescent
cells are thse that stp replicating (再生). As we age, they build up in ur bdies, resulting in sme diseases.
While several existing drugs can eliminate these cells, many must be taken repeatedly ver time. As an
alternative, Amr and clleagues turned t a “living” drug called CAR (chimeric antigen receptr)T cells.
They discvered CART cells culd be used t rid f senescent cells in mice. As a result, the mice ended up
living healthier lives. They had lwer bdy weight, imprved metablism (新陈代谢), and increased physical
activity. All these came withut any tissue damage r side effects.
Perhaps the greatest pwer f CART cells is their lng-lasting effects. The team fund that just ne dse (一剂)
at a yung age can have lifelng effects. That single treatment can prtect against cnditins that cmmnly ccur
      later in life.

T cells have the ability t develp memry and exist in yur bdy fr really lng perids. which is very
different frm a chemical drug,” Amr explained.
Amr’s lab is nw investigating whether CART cells let mice live nt nly healthier but als lnger. If s,
sciety will be ne step clser t the funtain f yuth.
