The huge area f nests came as a surprise, and will help scientists develp a mre cmplete idea f the cean fd
web in the area.
In the suth Weddell Sea, scientists discvered a grup f rughly 60 millin icefish nests n the cean flr.
Befre this, the largest grup f icefish nests ever fund had abut 60 nests. Researchers frm Germany’s Alfred
Wegener Institute n the research ship Plarstern were studying the cean flr in Antaretica. T d this, they used
a special device called OFOBS. The device cllects infrmatin and takes pictures and vide frm 5 — 8 feet (1.5

2.5meters) abve the sea flr. Lilian Behringer, a research student, was the first t spt the nests. “They were
everywhere,” she tld the New Yrk Times. During the first fur-hur filming sessin, the scientists fund ver
6,000 nests.
The researchers used OFOBS t make tw mre fur-hur “dives”, trying t discver the limits f the nesting

area. This allwed them t calculate that the nesting site cvers at least 92 square miles (240 square kilmeters).
The scientists were studying the area because the temperatures there are slightly warmer than the areas arund it.
