When cnsidering the members f my scial netwrk, I ften find myself envelped in pure feelings f lve and warmth, affectin and supprt. A handful, hwever, aruse quite different emtins — a mixture f eagerness and fear. In the right md, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrng mment, they can exhaust all my gdwill. If this sunds familiar, then yu t have frenemies. Psychlgists call them “ambivalent relatinships”. Accrding t a wealth f research these relatinships are ften mre stressful. They can damage yur mental and physical health.
Knwing this, the simple slutin wuld seem t be t cut ties with these peple. But ur relatinships with frenemies aren’t simple and ditching (摆脱) them isn’t always pssible r even desirable.
T capture interpersnal dynamics, Julianne Hlt-Lunstad and her Utah-based Brigham Yung University clleagues designed a scale identifying fur relatinship categries. Try it: pick peple in yur netwrk and answer tw questins n a 1-6 scale. When yu are feeling in need f advice, understanding r a favur, hw helpful is yur cnnectin? Likewise, hw upsetting is yur cnnectin?
Peple scring 1 n bth are indifferent relatinships. Thse wh scre high n helpfulness and lw n upset are supprtive ties; lw n helpfulness and high n upset are aversive relatinships; bth high indicate ambivalent cnnectins — frenemies. They may be incredibly generus when yu have a prblem yet can als lash ut (怒斥) with a bitter put-dwn when they feel envius r threatened.
We might hpe the gd utweighs the bad in such relatinships, but research cmplicates this. Hlt-Lunstad’s team fund that simply knwing that an ambivalent cnnectin was in the next rm as participants prepared t give a speech was enugh t send their bld pressure rcketing. It als slwed their recvery after the task. In fact, even unintentinal reminders f a frenemy can shatter ur peace f mind.
Furthermre, ambivalent cnnectins cntribute t telmere decline. Telmeres, prtective caps at chrmsme (染色体) ends, prevent DNA damage during cell divisin. As we age, telmeres wear dwn, and, when they becme t shrt, cells may start t malfunctin r die. Shrter telmeres increase the risk f age-related diseases.
The prblems f ambivalent cnnectins are hard t slve, especially in wrk r family. Simply being aware f the ambivalent nature f a relatinship might ffer sme prtectin, s that we culd manage expectatins, fcus mre n the gd in these peple and feel cmpassin fr their unpleasant streaks, while als attempting t reduce cntact when they cause stresses. Just as imprtantly this has prmpted me t cnsider my wn behavir — are there relatinships in which I am the frenemy?
      28. What des the underlined wrd “ambivalent” in paragraph 1 mean?
      A. Giving help r encuragement.B. Cntinuing r develping gradually.
      C. Having a mixture f ppsing feelings.D. Happening smetimes and nt at ther times.
      29. The authr uses Julianne Hlt-Lunstad’s scale t ______.
      A. measure the level f genersity in friendships
      B. predict the utcme f cnflicts with frenemies
      C. shw it’s difficult t break up with frenemies.
      D. cmpare the benefits f different cnnectins
      30. What can we learn abut frenemies frm the passage?
      A. Ambivalent cnnectins can shrten telmere t prevent DNA damage.
      B. Frenemies dn’t need t say a wrd t cause anxiety.
      C. Interacting with frenemies hardly results in helpful cnnectins.
      D. High expectatins n frenemies imprve the relatinship.

D We Need Art in Our Lives
N ne will be surprised t hear that the arts are under fire in this day and age. We view the arts as smething f a hbby, smething that’s fun but certainly can’t pay the rent. If it’s nt a useful skill, n wnder arts funding is being cut in schls. D we really need art in ur lives?
In schls, time and mney is at a premium (稀有而珍贵), nw mre than ever. With teachers having t fit s many lessns int every day, it’s easy t see why art is drpping mre and mre by the wayside. Budgets are drpping at an alarming rate, and what schl is ging t drp teaching in essential subjects such as math r science when they can drp art instead?
It seems as thugh the lss f art in daily life is a sad fact f life, but it desn’t have t be. There are actually a lt f practical uses fr art fr many peple. Fr example, art therapy has helped peple with a range f illnesses, bth mental and physical, cpe with their symptms. Art is fund almst anywhere yu lk in yur hme. Practical items, such as bedspreads, furniture r clthing, are all art frms in themselves and aruse emtins in the peple interacting with them.
Art als gives us insight int the wrld. Histry tells us what happened and when it happened, but it can’t tell us hw the ppulatin at large felt abut it, which is where art steps in. We knw a lt abut hw peple in the past lived and wrked, because their art has given us such a deep insight int their daily lives. We wuldn’t have that insight withut it.
Mst f all we need art in ur lives as it gives us a frm f self-expressin. Being able t talk abut ur feelings is essential t staying healthy. Yu may nt think yu talk abut yur feelings, but yu may express them in ther ways. Sme like t ck r bake, sme like t wrk n machinery, and thers may like t paint r draw. Whatever yu like t d in yur spare time, yu’re prbably creating art every day.
S, d we need art in ur lives? Many peple wuld say n, but the art they’re thinking f is the art yu see in galleries. Art is actually much mre accessible and is truly needed in everyday life. It helps thse in need, gives peple in the future an idea f what life was like, and is a vital frm f self-expressin.
      32. Why d sme schls drp art?
      __________________________________________________________________________________
      33. Frm which three aspects can art benefit ur lives?
      __________________________________________________________________________________
      34. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
We need art in ur lives but art nly exists in galleries and theatres.
