We fcus s much n the medalists — wh abslutely deserve it — that we miss the deeper, ften mre heric jurneys happening behind the scenes.”

A new study gives “funny r die” a whle new meaning. Published in April in the jurnal Psychsmatic Medicine, the research fund that wmen with a strng sense f humr tend t live lnger — even when they get sick, especially frm heart disease r infectins. Fr men, having a jyful persnality als helped prtect against infectins.
Nrwegian researchers fllwed 53,556 wmen and men ver 15 years. They wanted t see if a sense f humr culd affect hw lng peple live. The team used a detailed questinnaire t measure different parts f humr — like hw peple think, scialize, and feel abut funny situatins. They then lked at deaths frm several diseases, including heart disease, infectins, cancer, and lung disease.
The results shwed that wmen wh scred high in the “thinking” part f humr had:
·A 48% lwer risk f dying frm any cause,
·A 73% lwer risk f dying frm heart disease,
·And an 83% lwer risk f dying frm infectins.
Fr men, the benefit was nly seen in infectins — thse with high humr scres had a 74% lwer risk f dying frm them. Researchers think this difference between men and wmen might be because men’s sense f humr slightly decreased as they gt lder. Als, the scial and emtinal parts f humr didn’t shw any clear effect n hw lng peple lived.
Accrding t Sven Svebak, a prfessr wh c-authred the study, the thinking part f humr is a stable persnality trait (特性). It affects hw peple understand everyday events. This can help reduce scial cnflicts and stress and prevent stress hrmnes like crtisl(皮质醇) frm rising t much. When crtisl stays high fr a lng time, it weakens the immune system.
Althugh genes partly decide ur sense f humr, it’s als shaped by life experiences. Svebak says children wh dn’t see adults using humr t deal with prblems may nt use it themselves when they grw up. But dn’t wrry if yur childhd wasn’t filled with laughter — studies shw it’s never t late t learn t laugh at life’s absurdities (荒谬).
8. Hw did the researchers carry ut their study?
A. By assigning tasks.B. By ding an interview.
C. By ding field research.D. By designing questins.
9. Which part f humr has clearly affected peple’s life accrding t the study?
A. The scial part.B. The cultural part.
C. The thinking part.D. The emtinal part.
10. What can be inferred abut ur sense f humr accrding t Svebak?
A. Genes alne play a key rle.
B. It can be acquired when we grw up.
C. It must be develped since childhd.
D. It is rarely shaped by life experiences.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Laugh Lts, Live LngerB. Art f Grwing Yung
C. The Best Medicine fr UsD. Be Funny r Die Yung

We ften have a strng desire t feel listened t and understd. And when we dn’t feel like ur pint-f-view is being heard, we can quickly becme lnely, sad, frustrated, r even angry. This is ne f the biggest cntributrs t cnflict in ur relatinships and sciety as a whle.
A recent study published in the jurnal f Experimental Scial Psychlgy lked int this phenmenn. They studied the tensin between Palestinians and Israelis, as well as Mexican immigrants and white Ariznians.
What they fund was that when individuals were given a chance t share their stries and experiences with peple frm the ther side, it helped imprve their attitude abut the “ppsing grup”. This effect was even strnger when it was a member f the “disempwered grup” being heard by smene frm the “dminant (主导的) grup”.
Disempwered grups ften feel like their vice isn’t being heard. They think their values and needs aren’t being cnsidered, and whether in real cases r tests, this can cause anger tward the mre dminant grup, wh ften has mre f a strnghld ver public debate. Hwever, when the dminant grup makes an effrt t hear things frm anther pint-f-view, the disempwered grup begins t feel that their values and needs are being listened t. This can be a great starting pint fr easing cnflict and tensin.
There has been a lt f research shwing the psitive benefits f perspective-taking in ur relatinships. This is ne f the first studies t shw that “perspective giving” — the pprtunity t share ur experiences with thers — can be just as helpful in building strnger relatinships.
Hwever, researchers dn’t recmmend that the disempwered grup des all the talking. Instead, they believe that this is evidence that each grup shuld have an equal pprtunity t share their viewpints.
When we dn’t have chances t express urselves, it can ften lead t negative cnsequences fr everyne invlved. Being heard is imprtant t bth urselves and thers. It’s a part f healthy cmmunicatin, and it leads t slutins we wn’t find if we just ignre ne anther.
12. What phenmenn des the authr pint ut in Paragraph 1?
A. We can easily frm ur wn pint-f-view.
B. Cnflict ften ccurs in ur daily relatinships.
C. We ften fail t bring ur feelings under cntrl.
D. Our relatinship will be hurt when we feel ignred.
13. Hw did the researchers draw their cnclusin in terms f cnflict and tensin?
A. By making assumptins.
B. By surveying public pinins.
C. By studying decades f histrical recrds.
D. By cnducting experiments and bservatins.
14. Which can be helpful in strengthening relatinships accrding t the study?
A. Having a debate in public.
B. Ding all the talking t be heard.
C. Getting a chance t share viewpints.
D. Frcing views f ne’s wn n thers.
15. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. The pwer f being heard.
B. Sme tips abut winning respect.
C. The imprtance f vicing yur attitude.
D. The suggestins n hw t cmmunicate.

My daughter, Sarah, had just graduated frm university, and my husband and I were thrilled t hst a party in her hnr. We invited a mix f ur friends and her wn, wanting t celebrate this milestne with everyne wh mattered. I had spent days preparing all f her favrite fds, while my husband’s task was t be the master f ceremnies and ensure the md was light and jyful.
The huse was filled with laughter and cnversatin. Everything seemed t be ging perfectly. There was, hwever, ne thing I hadn’t fully planned fr: my father, a man f few but weighty wrds. He had never quite apprved f Sarah’s chice t study art histry. He believed a “practical degree” was the nly path t success.
My plan was t have my husband give a shrt, heartfelt tast (祝酒), aviding any pssible embarrassment. I had even gently reminded my father befrehand that this was a day fr celebratin, nt debate. He had simply grunted (嘟哝) in respnse, which I tk as agreement.
The tast was ging beautifully. My husband was speaking abut Sarah’s passin and determinatin when my father, glass in hand, std up unexpectedly. “I’d like t add smething,” he annunced. My heart sank. What fllwed was a lng speech abut “the real wrld” and “finding a prper jb”, which cast a visible shadw ver Sarah’s face. The jyful atmsphere in the rm grew tense and quiet.
It was a deeply uncmfrtable mment. I culdn’t let him ruin Sarah’s achievement, yet I didn’t want t publicly embarrass my elderly father. I quickly stepped in, thanked him, and guided the cnversatin back t the cake. He sat dwn, unhappy, and spent the rest f the party in stny silence. He left sn after withut saying a prper gdbye.
