I’m a seventeen-year-ld by preparing fr my A Level exams at the end f the year. In the sciety where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend t accept the rat race values. As students, we want t get gd grades s that we can get gd jbs. I enjy studying and have cnsistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accmplishment.

Mum was a husewife wh always felt bred and cnstantly nagged (唠叨) him t let her g t wrk. Their cnstant arguing bthered me, s I advised Dad that Mum wuld be better ff with a part-time jb. He agreed, and their relatinship has imprved since then.
My mst prud achievement, hwever, is my successful wrk in the lcal ld flks’ hme. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many f my classmates, I d nt take part in my schl's cmmunity service t earn pints. I enjy my vluntary wrk and believe I’m cntributing t a wrthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk t the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen t their prblems, glry days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hsted a successful New Year party fr the elderly and they enjyed a great time. Many expressed a desire t attend anther party the fllwing year. When I reflect n my accmplishments, I’m especially prud f my service at the ld flks’ hme, s I hpe t study scial wrk at university and wrk as a scial wrker in the future. I wish t be mre skilled in attending t the less frtunate as well as find great satisfactin in it, after all.

Several studies shw cmmunicatin skills are the mst imprtant skills fr American adults. They are ften taught thrugh Scial-Emtinal Learning (SEL) prgrams, which encurage student invlvement (参与), ffered in K-12 schls in 27 states. But they are als a by-prduct f theater classes, accrding t a recent study. The study fllwed children aged 5 t 18 ver six years and fund increases in cmmunicatin skills acrss ages. The lnger the kids spent n the theater classes, the mre they gained in 21st-century skills, like cmmunicatin, creativity, imaginatin, and prblem slving, says Thalia Gldstein, the study’s c-authr.
Theater invlves different learning —getting up n yur feet t take in infrmatin, rather than sitting at a desk. “When yu put smething in yur bdy, it lasts lnger, and yu remember it lnger,” says Kathryn Dawsn, assciate prfessr f theater at the University f Texas at Austin. Theater prvides an awareness f space. And it enables mre than expressins with wrds.

At 13, she is nt afraid t speak publicly r jin the student cuncil; she listens and has cnfidence. “Kids g t these classes and cme hme feeling excited, like they have achieved smething.” Williams says. And nt just the utging kids — fr the shy, theater pens them up. A theater class prvides a supprtive envirnment, free frm unkind judgment. Yu can keep yur persnality, and unlike in sprts, yu’re nt cmpeting with anyne.

Teenagers wh talk n the cell phne a lt, and hld their phnes up t their right ears, scre wrse n ne type f memry test. That’s the finding f a new study. That memry impairment might be ne side effect f the radiatin (放射线) that phnes use t keep us cnnected while we’re n the g.
Nearly 700 Swiss teens tk part in a test f figural memry. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbls and shapes, explains Milena Ferster. The teens tk memry tests twice, ne year apart. Each time, they had ne minute t remember 13 pairs f abstract shapes. Then they were shwn ne item frm each pair and asked t match it with ne f the five chices. The study vlunteers als tk a test f verbal memry. That’s the ability t remember wrds. The tw memry tests are part f an intelligence test. The researchers als surveyed the teens n hw they use cell phnes. And they gt call recrds frm phne cmpanies. The researchers used thse recrds t figure ut hw lng the teens were using their phnes. This allwed the researchers t wrk ut hw big a radiatin expsure (接触) each persn culd have gt while talking.
A phne user’s expsure t the radiatin can differ widely. Sme teens talk n their phnes mre than thers. Peple als hld their phnes differently. If the phne is clse t the ear, mre radiatin may enter the bdy, Ferster ntes. Even the type f netwrk signal that a phne uses can matter. Much f Switzerland was using an lder “secnd-generatin” type f cell phne netwrks, the study reprts. Many phne carriers (通讯公司) have mved away frm such netwrks. And mre cmpanies plan t update their netwrks within the next few years.
The teens’ scres in the figural memry tests were rughly the same frm ne year t the next. But thse wh nrmally held their phnes near the right ears, and wh were als expsed t higher levels f radiatin, scred a little bit wrse after a year. N grup f teens shwed big changes n the verbal memry test. Why might ne type f memry be linked t cell phne use, but nt anther? Ferster thinks it culd have t d with where different memry centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability t remember shapes is near the right ear.
      12. Accrding t Paragraph 2, which f the fllwing is TRUE?
      A. The teens tk tw types f memry tests fur times in ttal.
      B. The teens needed t reprt the average time spent n their phnes.
      C. Researchers paid little attentin t the teens’ habits f using phnes.
      D. The teens’ ability f remembering wrds is shwn in figural memry test.
      13. What can we infer frm Paragraph 3?
      A. Hw peple hld their phnes has n effect n their bdies.
      B. Phne users can make mre mney with new netwrks.
      C. The cell phne netwrk type has little t d the cell phne use.
      D. Radiatin levels are affected by the cell phne netwrk types.
      14. Accrding t the study, teens wh use their phnes t their right ears a lt d wrse in ________.
      A. matching numbersB. reading signals
      C. remembering shapesD. learning wrds
      15. What might be the best title fr the text?
      A. Cell phne use and safety warnings
      B. Facts abut cell phne use at schl
      C. Dangerus levels f cell phne use amng teens
      D. Teen’s cell phne use linked t memry prblems
