At 18, I cmpeted in my first marathn (马拉松) in Dublin, Ireland. At that time, I was an excellent 400-meter runner at high schl, but gt it int my head that I shuld try the lnger distance t prve that I was really gd at running — and what was better than the marathn?
Back then, the running craze hadn’t quite heated up t the pint it has tday and running a marathn was unknwn t mst peple. Besides, I never knew anyne wh had actually run a marathn.
On the way frm England t Dublin, I was wndering what I was getting myself in tw days later when the race wuld begin. I tried t get sme sleep t ease my nerves, but I fund it hard.
The race day was smewhat cludy, but the warmth f the peple frced the cluds away. My limited memries f that first race remain: the feeling f running thrugh tunnel (隧道) f peple as the crwds lined the streets; the cheers frm the crwds as the news came that an Irishman had wn the race; what’s the mst impressive, the kindness f the crwds encuraging me n as I hit the wall and tried t struggle thrugh. Eventually, I didn’t get the prize, but I never gave up and regarded it as a success because I challenged myself.

Chinese scientists have designed the first AI-pwered rbt lifeguard (机器人救生员), which is able t perate withut the need fr any human help. Researchers have been testing the rbt at a riverside site in Luhe city in the central prvince f Henan and it will be psitined there frever.
The rbt uses AI, big data and tracking technlgies t perate 24 hurs a day withut any human cntrl r presence, accrding t the team frm the Hefei Institutes (研究所) f Physical Science. The leader ntes that it is the rbt lifeguard strength cmpared t humans.
The lifeguard will use an algrithm (算法) t decide if smene is drwning (溺水) and is equipped with a life-saving buy and rescue arm in rder t pull peple ut f the water, if they are unable t hld nt its sides by themselves. Drwning can be fast and silent and there is an imprtant perid f five minutes r less t rescue smene, which means that a rbt that can reach the scene mre quickly than any human culd make the difference between life and death.
The rbt lifeguard is designed t perate within a specific area f water, and needs a netwrk f 100 cameras t prvide 24-hur bservatin f the whle area. The camera images are sent t a server that uses an algrithm t tell if smene is in truble in the water, in which case it will send ut the lifeguard.
The rbt is set up t plan the rescue rute based n the drwning persn’s lcatin and has an intelligent imaging system designed t track the target by itself. Once the target is reached, it will send ut its emergency equipment and use its rescue arm if needed.
“Althugh sme waters in China have early warning systems fr drwning accidents, the quickness, crrectness and cntrlling range f these existing methds are nt enugh, and emergency rescue peratins are mainly dne by peple, with slw actins and a shrtage f rescue equipment,” the Hefei Institutes said when annuncing the prject.
It is nt the first rbt lifeguard, but it is the first fully self-perating ne that perates withut any need fr human help.
