There is an ld saying that America and Britain are “tw natins divided by a cmmn language.” N ne
knws exactly wh said this, but it reflects the way many Brits feel abut American English. But are American and
      British English really s different?
      Vcabulary
The mst bvius difference between American and British English is vcabulary. Fr example, Americans
g n vacatin while Brits g n hlidays; New Yrkers live in apartments while Lndners live in flats. There are
far mre examples than we can talk abut here. Frtunately, mst Americans and Brits can usually guess the
meaning thrugh the cntext f a sentence.
      Past Tense Verbs
Yu’ll als find sme differences with past frms f irregular verbs. The past tense f “learn” in American
English is “learned”. British English has the ptin (选择) f “learned” r “learnt”. The same rule applies t
      “dreamed” and “dreamt”, “burned” and “burnt”, and “leaned” and “leant”. Americans tend t use the -ed ending;
Brits tend t use the -t ending.
      Spelling
There are hundreds f slight spelling differences between British and American English. Nah Webster, an
      第 3页/共 11页
authr, plitician and teacher, made an effrt t refrm English spelling in the late 1700s. Webster wanted t spell
wrds the way they sunded. Yu can see Webster’s legacy (遗产) in the American spelling f wrds like clr
(frm clur), hnr (frm hnur), and labr (frm labur).
      Nt S Different After All
British and American English have far mre similarities than differences. With the exceptin f sme reginal
dialects (方言), mst Brits and Americans can understand each ther withut t much difficulty. They watch each
ther’s TV shws, sing each ther’s sngs and read each ther’s bks. They even make fun f each ther’s accents.
      26. Which f the fllwing is a grup f American wrds?
      A. Vacatin; hliday. B. Apartment; flat.
      C. Vacatin; apartment. D. Hliday; flat.
      27. What d we knw abut British and American English frm the last paragraph?
      A. They bth have sme strange wrds.
      B. They are affecting peple using them.
      C. They cnnect peple f the tw cuntries.
      D. Their differences have little effect n cmmunicatin.
      28. Where is the text mst likely frm?

In middle schl, I was ne f the “gifted” kids. I felt like I was n tp f the wrld. I was able t even use my
“gifted” title t get accepted int a famus private high schl, smething I’d never expected.
Then high schl began. All f a sudden, I was n lnger at the tp f my class. Teachers didn’t lk t me fr
the crrect answer. My papers were filled with crrectins, nt praise. T put it simply, all the straight-As n my
      reprt card were quickly disappearing.
My parents’ cncern grew — they began t search fr tutrs and wuld cnstantly ask me as if they were
trying t find ut what was wrng with me. My cncern grew t — the pressure t live up t their expectatins
nly became greater and I fund myself cnstantly anxius, and wrrying abut schl.
Last week, watching Simne Biles pull ut f the Olympics reminded me f this feeling. Simne Biles: the
GOAT (Greatest f All Time). If there was any ne persn we knew we culd depend n t win gld in her event, it
was Simne. But that kind f pressure is unbearable. Imagine having t practically carry the Olympics n yur
      第 4页/共 11页
back because all f the United States feels as thugh they can rely n yu. Hwever, unlike me and my
freshman-year identity crisis, Simne recgnized the pressure she was under. She had the bravery and
self-reflective skills t be able t realize that the pressure f perfectin was t much fr her t handle.
Simne Biles has taught me a very imprtant lessn: t be the greatest persn f all time, mental health must
cme first. Instead f getting dwn n myself fr nt perfrming the way I wanted t, I need t take a nte frm
Simne and be kind t myself, taking a break and asking fr help when necessary. Taking care f yurself and yur
mental health is nthing t be ashamed f. After all, if GOAT can d it, s can we!

Srry rabbits, but giant trtises are still winning the race f life by treating it like a marathn and taking each
step slw and steady. Recently, the wrld’s ldest trtise, Jnathan, has turned 191 years ld. This extends his title
f the ldest living land animal by anther year.
Unfficially, there have been claims f lder trtises, including ne believed t have been 255 years ld
when it died in 2006. Researchers have nt been able t pin dwn exactly what keeps them arund fr s lng, but
      第 5页/共 11页
their slw-mtin lifestyle may have smething t d with it.
Giant trtises have very slw metablisms (新陈代谢), which means they burn energy at a slwer rate than
smaller and faster animals. Physilgist Max Rubner intrduced the rate f living thery. The thery suggested an
inverse relatinship between metablism and lifespan, which means that the faster the metablism, the shrter the
life. Scientists have had sme issues with the thery ver the past century, but it did prduce the phrase “‘live fast,
die yung", and it serves as the basis fr mre research n the tpic.
The link between metablism and lngevity (长寿) is still nt understd. Sme scientists believe that
metablism is linked t the creatin f free radicals (自由基). They are the mlecules (分子) that damage cells and
that increase as mre energy is burned by the bdy. Accrding t this thery, trtises live lnger because their
slw metablisms bum less energy. which means less harm t the cells in their bdies.
Theries n aging alne dn’t fully explain hw trtises live much lnger than humans, but their
reprductive (繁殖的) life and size may give an explanatin. Because f their massive hard shells and their
gegraphic islatin (they nly live n a few specific islands), giant trtises have very few enemies t wrry abut.
This means giant trtises dn’t have t rush int reprductin t keep their species alive.
Each thery has its limitatins and unanswered questins, but scientists believe that a cmbinatin f
bilgical and evlutinary factrs is what keeps giant trtises alive fr s lng.
      33. What des the underlined wrd “inverse” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Similar. B. Oppsite. C. Clear. D. Unchanging.
      34. What can we learn abut free radicals?
      A. Free radicals can prtect cells.
      B. Free radicals increase with age.
      C. Fewer free radicals lead t a lnger lifetime.
      D. The slwer the metablism, the mre free radicals.
      35. Why dn’t giant trtises rush t prduce their yung?
      A. They have little wrry abut extinctin.
      B. They have a lw reprductive ability
      C. They live a lng time.
      D. They usually prefer t be alne.
      36. What culd be the best title fr this article?
      A. Live fast, die yung. B. The way metablism wrks.
      第 6页/共 11页
      C. Jnathan, ldest trtise. D. Secret t giant trtises’ lngevity.
      D
Expecting the wrst t avid feeling bad later is knwn as “bracing”. It may help them prepare fr emtinally
challenging situatins, particularly in the mments befre these situatins ccur. Peple brace fr the wrst while
awaiting ptentially negative utcmes. Smene might als brace fr the wrst in anticipatin f stressful events
like giving a presentatin at wrk.
Sme psychlgical theries suggest that bracing shuld help. Fr example, “decisin affect thery” prpses
that hw we feel abut a situatin is determined partly by cmparing what actually happened with what culd have
happened. Based n this, peple shuld be happy when an event ges beynd their expectatins, and disappinted
when an event falls behind. Therefre, by anticipating the wrst, ne can safeguard themselves against future
disappintment, as any result is likely t surpass their expectatins.
Other psychlgical theries, nevertheless, undermine the idea that bracing will be helpful. It has been
therized and scientifically established that expectatins can pwerfully influence reality. There are tw key ways
      that expectatins can shape reality.
First, peple may behave in ways that fit with their expectatins. If yu expect t fail an upcming test r
interview, then yu might nt invest effrts in preparatin, which in turn reduces yur chances f ding well.
Secnd, peple may interpret a situatin in line with their expectatins. Imagine yu believe yu are insufficiently
qualified fr a jb yu’ve applied fr. During the jb interview, yu’re likely t interpret blank expressins frm
the interviewer in line with this belief, which culd negatively affect yur perfrmance. In fact, the interviewer did
nt want t give anything away.
Drawing tgether the scientific studies, it seems that expecting the wrst is anything but a wise way t prepare
fr upcming news r results. It might be mre sensible t hld psitive expectatins than t brace fr the wrst.
      37. What is the secnd paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The lgic f preparing fr the wrst.
      B. The thery f cmparing past and future.
      C. The cnflict between peple’s expectatin and reality.
      D. The emtins hidden behind anticipating the wrst.
      38. What des the underlined wrd “undermine” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Strengthen. B. Prpse.
      C. Weaken. D. Justify.
      第 7页/共 11页
      39. Hw can negative expectatins prbably affect peple’s perfrmance in reality?
      A. By reducing peple’s chances f ding well.
      B. By stimulating peple’s ambitin and mtivatin.
      C. By giving weight t peple’s ptential f excellence.
D By causing less preparatin and sme misinterpretatins.
      40. Which wuld the authr mst likely agree with regarding “bracing fr the wrst”?
      A. It fully guarantees peple a psitive emtinal experience.
      B. It may bring mre drawbacks than benefits in practice.
      C. It is a universal slutin fr handling difficult situatins.
      D. It has n impact n hw peple view real-life events.
