While I was wrking at a French schl, I was ften preparing my wrk in the staff rm. Smetimes I wuld hear the schl secretary talking. At first I thught she was talking t me, as there was n ne else in the rm except me, s I tried t respnd t her. Hwever, I sn realized that in fact, she was talking t herself. I nticed a lt f peple d this in France. In the UK, peple might think yu’re a bit strange if yu talk t yurself at wrk, but there it seemed quite nrmal. This is an aspect f French which, even nw, I d nt really understand. When I learnt French, I was taught t call everyne vus unless they were my family r friends. S I was surprised that virtually everyne in France used the infrmal tu all the time. Schl children used tu when they stayed with their teachers and all the staff called the head teacher tu. But I cntinued t use vus because I didn’t want peple t think I was implite.
As yu might knw, schl children in the UK traditinally wear schl unifrms but in France pupils d nt wear a unifrm. It was a culture shck fr me t see children wear Spiderman Tshirts and baggy (宽松的) blue jeans in the classrm.
I fund the differences puzzling at times, but I culdn’t deny what a great pprtunity it was t live and wrk in anther cuntry. The UK and France are nly separated by a small channel f the sea, but there are many differences between the tw cuntries.
