      The Imprtance f Humur(幽默的重要性)
Humur has been essential part f human behaviur fr thusands f years. There is cmedy in the texts f Ancient Greece, and medieval writings are (fill) with jkes. While these same jkes might nt be as funny t us nw they were then, their authrs (understand) that humur culd nt nly entertain but thrw new light n sensitive r emtive issues.
Clser t mdern times, smene is remembered fr his ability (cmbine) humur with mre serius messages is American writer, Mark Twain. Twain’s particular style f writing is funny and ften mischievus. Fr example, in his classic nvel The Adventures f Tm Sawyer, he (famus)says,“Writing is easy. All yu have t d (be) crss ut the wrng wrds.” But he is equally well knwn his witty remarks in his everyday interactins with peple. Fr instance, while n a lecturing tur f the United States, Twain went int a barber’s shp (get) a haircut and a shave. The barber, nt (recgnise) him, asked if he had a ticket the lecture. When Twain (reply)that he didn’t, the barber tld him that he wanted t g t the event he wuld have t stand, as there were n seats left in the theatre. Twain’s respnse was,“That’s just my luck. I always have t stand when that fellw lectures!”
Like Twain, but n the ther side f the wrld, Lin Yutang was sn t becme famus fr his unique brand f humur. A well-knwn bilingual writer, Lin brught the cncept f humur t mdern Chinese literature. In 1924, he (creative)brrwed“yum”frm Ancient Chinese as the translatin fr the English wrd“humur”. “Yum”is still being (use) in this way tday.
Lin’s quick wit helped make him famus a master f humur. Once, having been invited (dinner) at a university, he was put n the spt when the president (sudden)asked him t give a speech. (think) n his feet, Lin started t tell a stry abut a cruel Rman emperr tried t feed a man t wild animals. First came a lin. The man whispered smething in the lin’s ear, after which the lin shk (it) head and walked away (unhappy). Then alng came a tiger. Again, the man whispered in the tiger’s ear. The tiger lked shcked and (hurry)away. “What did yu say t my animals?” said the emperr, astnished. “I tld them they had t make speech after (eat) me fr dinner.”Lin’s audience rared with laughter. With this little jke, Lin was able t make peple laugh, while gently telling ff the president.
Bth Twain and Lin understd that humur isn’t just abut laughter, but is a way f life and a tl can be used t illuminate the wrld. Lin even created an equatin t (explain) this cncept: Reality + Dreams + Humur = Wisdm. Living and wrking with thers can smetimes be cmplicated, and humur makes this easier. Sharing jkes and laughing tgether can bring individuals and even cmmunities tgether. Indeed, sme may argue that ur need fr humur is almst as great as ur need fr water and air. In the wrds f Mark Twain, “Humr is mankind’s greatest blessing”.

[2024·九省联考] In his 1936 wrk Hw t Win Friends and Influence Peple, Dale Carnegie wrte: “I have cme t the cnclusin that there is nly ne way t get the best f an argument — and that is t avid it.” This distaste fr arguments is cmmn, but it depends n a mistaken view f arguments that causes prblems fr ur persnal and scial lives — and in many ways misses the pint f arguing in the first place.
Carnegie wuld be right if arguments were fights, which is hw we ften think f them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave bth sides bldied. Even when yu win, yu end up n better ff. Yu wuld feel almst as bad if arguments were just cmpetitins — like say, tennis turnaments. Pairs f ppnents hit the ball back and frth until ne winner cmes ut frm all wh entered. Everybdy else lses. This kind f thinking explains why s many peple try t avid arguments.
Hwever, there are ways t win an argument every time. When yu state yur psitin, frmulate (阐述) an argument fr what yu claim and hnestly ask yurself whether yur argument is any gd. When yu talk with smene wh takes a stand, ask them t give yu a reasn fr their view and spell ut their argument fully. Assess its strength and weakness. Raise bjectins (异议) and listen carefully t their replies. This methd will require effrt, but practice will make yu better at it.
These tls can help yu win every argument — nt in the unhelpful sense f beating yur ppnents but in the useful sense f learning abut what divides peple, learning why they disagree with us and learning t talk and wrk tgether with them. If we readjust ur view f arguments — frm a verbal fight r tennis game t a reasned exchange thrugh which we all gain respect and understanding frm each ther — then we change the very nature f what it means t “win” an argument.

      1. What is the authr's attitude tward Carnegie's understanding f argument?
      A. Critical. B. Supprtive.
      C. Tlerant. D. Uncertain.
      2. Why d many peple try t avid arguments?
      A. They lack debating skills.
      B. They may feel bad even if they win.
      C. They fear being ignred.
      D. They are nt cnfident in themselves.
      3. What des the underlined phrase “spell ut” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Defend. B. Explain.
      C. Cnclude. D. Repeat.
      4. What is the key t “winning” an argument accrding t the authr?
      A. Sense f lgic.
      B. Slid supprting evidence.
      C. Prper manners.
      D. Understanding frm bth sides.

根据第一段中的“This distaste fr arguments is cmmn, but it depends n a mistaken view f arguments that causes prblems...”可知,作者认为人们对争论的厌恶源于对争论的错误看法;根据第二段中的“Carnegie wuld be right if arguments were fights...”
根据第二段中的“Like physical fights, verbal fights can leave bth sides bldied. Even when yu win, yu end up n better ff. Yu wuld be feeling almst as bad if arguments were even just cmpetitins...”
根据画线词前的and 可知,spell ut their angument 与 ask them t give yu a reasn fr their view 是并列关系,再结合画线词后的“Assess its strength and weakness. Raise bjectins and listen carefully t their replies.”
根据文章最后一句“If we readjust ur view f arguments--frm a verbal fight r tennis game t a reasned exchange thrugh which we all gain respect and understanding frm each ther-then we change the very nature f what it means t ‘win’an argument.”
