D big sprting events make us d mre sprt?
I recently spent half a weekend sitting n the sfa watching the Davis Cup. I thught abut ging fr a run, but I did nt want t miss the rest f the match. Sn it was starting t get dark, s I did nt bther. Whenever I watch tennis, I think hw nice it wuld be t play it regularly. But I have been thinking that fr almst 20 years withut actually setting ft n a curt. The evidence wuld suggest that I'm nt the nly ne.
When a cuntry r city bids t hst an internatinal sprting event, it ften prmises that mre peple will take up sprts as a result. Lndn was n exceptin. Tessa Jwell, wh helped t secure the 2012 Olympics fr Lndn, said they wuld be the first t set challenging but achievable targets as a measure f their ambitin: By 2012 tw millin mre peple wuld be physically active. And 60 percent f yung peple wuld be ding at least five hurs f sprts per week.
In the end it did nt turn ut quite like that. Just ver nethird f peple in Britain take part in sprts nce a week. A reprt n Olympic and Paralympic legacy has said that a big change in participatin levels simply has nt happened.
Why isn't there a big increase in peple taking part in sprts after mst sprting events? Perhaps it is a mistake t assume an autmatic link between watching sprts and playing it. While the games are n, they actually encurage peple t d just the ppsite—t spend whle sunny days nt ut playing sprts, but inside sitting n the sfa with the curtains shut t stp the sun shining n the TV screen and spiling the view. We dn't expect half the audience f a hit musical t apply t drama schl the next day, yet we seem t expect it f sprting events.
We might have sat n the sfa ding an impressin f Usain Blt's bwandarrw signature pse. But hw many f us have been inspired by watching him sprint(短跑)100 meters? The highlevel perfrmances n shw nly remind peple that they culd never match the elite athletes in their sprting achievements even if they trained full time.
Maybe participatin in sprts is nt the right legacy t expect after a majr sprting event. It's nt s much that the Olympics failed t get peple t participate but rather that this was never ging t be the result. The Olympics can d many things, but maybe this cannt necessarily be ne f them.

      长难句分析
It's nt s much that the Olympics failed t get peple t participate but rather that this was never ging t be the result.
      分析:本句是复合句,nt s much 是一个固定短语,意为“与其说是……不如说是……”。as前后部分须保持一致,可以是名词、名词短语或从句。本句中,用but rather替换了as。
