Accrding t research by psychlgist Stanley Cren, an average-size dg will dream abut every 20 minutes, and these dreams will last abut a minute. Yesterday, peple n the scial media site Twitter reacted with surprise and humr t a reprt that claimed, “Scientists have taught spinach t send emails.” That’s nt exactly true, but the “news” is based n sme amazing wrk dne by MIT (Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy) scientists in 2016, and it’s still wrth learning abut.
Scientists at MIT have managed t change rdinary spinach plants int natural sensrs which can detect chemicals used in bmbs. Using a cheap and small cmputer system, the spinach can even send a warning email.
The secret t giving spinach these special pwers is nantechnlgy. Fr this experiment the scientists placed tw different kinds f nantech materials int spinach plants: sme were tiny sensrs; thers were tiny tubes called carbn nantubes. T get the tiny materials int the plants, the scientists put a liquid cntaining the nan-materials n the bttm f the plants’ leaves. That’s where the plants nrmally take in CO2 gas.
Once the tiny sensrs and nantubes were in the spinach leaves, the plants did the rest f the wrk. As part f their natural prcess, the spinach plants pull water thrugh their rts and int their leaves. If the water cntains certain chemicals that are used in bmbs, the sensrs in the leaves make the nantubes give ff a slightly different kind f light.
By watching the plants cnstantly using a camera attached t a cheap cmputer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals frm explsives are detected in the water.
The researchers say it takes abut 10 minutes fr the plants t react t the chemicals. The cmputer the scientists used is abut the size f a playing card. They say that in the future, their system culd even use a cellphne with its camera changed slightly.
