Frm Mzart t Metallica, tns f peple enjy listening t varius types f music while they paint, write, r draw. Mst believe that music helps increase creativity, but an internatinal study cnducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were eched by scientists frm Lancaster University, and the University f Gavle, saying their findings shw music actually weakens creativity.
T reach their cnclusins researchers had vlunteers cmplete verbal prblems designed t inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet rm, and then again while music played in the backgrund. They fund that backgrund music significantly weakened the vlunteers’ ability t cmplete tasks cnnected with verbal creativity. The team als tested backgrund nises like thse cmmnly heard in a library, but fund that such nises had n influence n subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple wrd games. Fr example, vlunteers were given three wrds, such as dress, rise, and flwer. Then, they were asked t find a single wrd cnnected with all three that culd be cmbined t frm a cmmn phrase r wrd. The single wrd, in this case, wuld be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflwer). Vlunteers cmpleted the tasks in either a quiet rm, r while listening t tw different types f music: rck music r light music
“We fund strng evidence f weakened perfrmance when playing backgrund music in cmparisn t quiet backgrund cnditins,” says c-authr D. Neil McLatchie f Lancaster University. He and his clleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal wrking memry prcesses f the brain, preventing creativity. Als, as far as the library backgrund nises having seemingly n effect, the study’s authrs believe that was the case because library nises create a “regular state” envirnment that desn’t affect cncentratin.
“T cnclude, the findings here challenge the ppular view that music increases creativity, and instead shw that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage fr creative perfrmance in prblem slving,” the study reads.
      4. The underlined wrd in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by ________.
      A. challengedB. acceptedC. dubtedD. heard
      5. What were the vlunteers asked t d in the study?
      A. T play music.B. T cmbine given wrds.
      C. T create new wrds.D. T cnnect wrds with music.
      6. What can we infer frm the study?
      A. Quiet backgrund inspires creativity best.B. Library nise des n harm t creativity.
      C. Music has a bad effect n language ability.D. Music types matter in creative perfrmance.
      7. Which is the main idea f the passage?
      A. Quiet Envirnments Prevent Cncentratin.B. Backgrund NiseAffects Cncentratin.
      C. Cmpsing Music Weakens Creativity.D. Listening t Music Reduces Creativity.

The effect was measurable even when the phnes were switched ff, and was wrse fr thse wh were mre dependent n their mbiles.
The researchers tested 520 university students n their memry and intelligence when in the presence f a smart phne t see hw it affected them. Participants were tld t cmplete tests in mathematics, memry and reasning with their smart phnes either n their desk, in their bag r pckets,r in anther rm. Thse wh had their phnes n the desk recrded a 10 per cent lwer scre than thse wh left them in a different rm n peratinal tasks, which measures wrking memry and fcus. Thse wh kept their phnes further ut f sight in their pckets r their bags scred nly slightly better than when phnes were placed n desks.
The researchers fund that the negative effect f having a phne within eye sht was much greater amng thse wh said they were dependent n their smart phnes. Participants wh had expressed sympathy with phrases such as “I wuld have truble getting thrugh a nrmal day withut my cellphne” and “using my cellphne makes me feel happy” perfrmed as well as thers when their phne was in a different rm,but wrse when it was placed n their desk.
The researchers said the effect arises because part f a smart phne users’ mind is devted t trying nt t think abut distractins such as whether they have any messages when the smart phne is in their sight.

But nt everyne agrees that clnizing Mars r any ther planet is such a great plan. The mst cmmn argument against ging is that it’s just t expensive r dangerus. It will take huge amunts f mney and ther resurces just t get peple there, let alne set up a place fr them t live. It’s nt even clear if humans culd survive n Mars. One f the biggest dangers there is deadly radiatin that bmbards the planet.
Maybe all the time and mney peple wuld pur int a Mars missin wuld be better spent n mre urgent prjects here n Earth, like dealing with pverty r climate change. Sme experts argue that handling a prblem like an asterid strike r disease utbreak while staying here n Earth wuld be much easier and less expensive than surviving n a new planet.
In additin, mving t a new planet culd harm r destry anything that already lives there. Mars seems uninhabited, but it culd pssibly hst micrbial life. Human visitrs may destry this life r permanently change r damage the Martian envirnment. Sme feel that’s t much f a risk t take.
What d yu think? Shuld humans clnize uter space r stay hme?

      D. All the ther experts dn’t agree with Hawking’s idea.
      13. Why d sme experts disagree with the plan t clnize Mars?
      A. It will cst much mre mney t settle n Mars than n Earth.
      B. It is t lng a distance frm the Earth t the Mars.
      C. Human visitrs will bring diseases t Martian envirnment.
      D. The deadly radiatin that bmbards the planet is the biggest danger.
      14. What’s the writing purpse f the passage?
