This first cntact was where my stry began.
A mnth later, Brwn invited me t attend the Wrld Yuth Wildlife Cnference. Lking back, I nw see this wuld be the first in a series f timely pprtunities that my ld self wuld have let pass, but that this new and mre cnfident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shrtly after I received his invitatin, applicatins t jin the Yuth fr Nature and the Yuth fr Planet grups were sent arund thrugh my high schl. I decided t cmmit myself t cmpleting the applicatins, and sn I was a part f a grwing glbal team f yung peple wrking t prtect nature. Each f these new steps cntinued t grw my cnfidence.
I am writing this just six mnths since my jurney began and I’ve realized that my biggest bstacle the whle time was myself. It was that vice in the back f my head telling me that ne phrase that has stpped s many peple frm reaching their ptential: I can’t. They say gd things cme t thse wh wait. I’ve been giving lts f thught recently t the teaching f the science subject at schls. I’m wndering whether spending mre time learning hw we “d” science –– the scientific methd –– is mre valuable than simply making children memrize scientific “facts”.
After all, science isn’t a cllectin f facts abut the wrld. That’s just called “knwledge”. Rather, science is a prcess f thinking and making sense f the wrld, which will then lead t new knwledge. We’ve ften heard it said that we shuld be teaching children nt what t think but hw t think. Hwever, schls nw spend s much f the science subject lading up children’s brains with “knwledge”.
Surely, everyne needs a basic scientific understanding. We all need t knw sme science: facts abut the wrld t help us make infrmed decisins abut imprtant issues that face us all in ur everyday lives, frm the risks f smking t the benefits f exercising r why recycling ur waste is gd fr the planet.
Yet what seems t be missing tday is an understanding f the way we gain this scientific understanding f the wrld. Nwadays, scial media has played a significant rle in spreading infrmatin. Hwever, many peple use it as a medium fr spreading disinfrmatin r harmful pinins. But scial media has nly enlarged the scietal prblem that has been with us.
On tp f this, ur attentin spans(时长)are naturally getting shrter, and we dn’t take the time t questin ur views, r ask whether the infrmatin we are getting is reliable. This is where thinking scientifically can help. Adpting sme f the ways that gd science is practiced can help us t critically assess what we believe, questin ur wn views befre we attack views we dn’t like, and s n.
This is exactly why we shuld be teaching mre f scientific methds in schls. This remarkable way f seeing, thinking and knwing, is ne f humankind’s great riches and the birthright f everyne. And, mst wnderfully, it nly grws in quality and value the mre widely it is shared.
8. What is the authr cncerned abut accrding t Paragraph 1?
A. The teaching tpics f the science subject.B. Students’ interest in the science subject.
C. The teaching cntent f the science subject.D. The lack f emphasis n science in schls.
9 What is the third paragraph mainly abut?
A. The applicatin f science in daily lives.B. The understanding f science in daily lives.
C. The methd f knwing scientific facts.D. Sme scientific phenmena in daily lives.
10. What des the underlined part “the scietal prblem” in Paragraph 4 refer t?
A. The spread f false infrmatin.B. The misunderstanding f science.
C. The ppularity f scial media.D. The negative impact f scial media.
11. What can students get frm learning scientific methds?
A. Imprved attentin in class.B. Grwing interest in science.

In rder t help discver spilage and reduce fd waste fr supermarkets and cnsumers, researchers have develped new lw-cst, smart phne-linked, ec-friendly spilage sensrs fr meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK cnsumers thrw away fd just because it reaches the use-by date, but 60% f the £12.5 billin-wrth f fd we thrw away each year is safe t eat.
The researchers, whse findings were published in ACS Sensrs, say the sensrs culd als eventually replace the use-by date—a widely used indicatr f being fresh and eatable.
The sensrs cst tw US cents each t make. Knwn as “paper-based electrical gas sensrs (PEGS)”, they detect spilage gases like ammnia (a pisnus gas with a strng unpleasant smell) in meat and fish prducts. The infrmatin prvided by the electrnic nse is received by a smart phne, and then yu can knw whether the fd is fresh and safe t eat.
The Imperial Cllege Lndn researchers wh develped PEGS made the sensrs by printing carbn electrdes nt a special type f paper. The materials are ec-friendly and harmless, s they dn’t damage the envirnment and are safe t use in fd packaging. The sensrs, cmbined with a tiny electrnic system, then infrm nearby mbile devices, which identify and understand the data abut spilage gases.
Lead authr Dr Firat Guder f Imperial’s Department f Biengineering, said, “Althugh they’re designed t keep us safe, use-by dates can lead t eatable fd being thrwn away. They dn’t always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, peple ften get sick frm fd-brne diseases due t pr strage, even when an item is within its use-by date.”
“These sensrs are cheap enugh s we hpe t see supermarkets using them within three years. Our gal is t use PEGS in fd packaging t reduce unnecessary fd waste.”
The authrs hpe that PEGS culd have applicatins beynd fd prcessing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like thse invlved in kidney disease.
12. What is the functin f PEGS accrding t the text?
A. T imprve the taste f fds.B. T imprve the service f stres.
C. T help supermarkets stre fds.D. T help peple test fd freshness.
13. What rle des the smartphne play while PEGS are functining?
A. It acts as an electrnic nse.B. It reads the data cllected by PEGS.
C. It helps print the gas sensrs nt paper.D. It discvers the spilage gases frm fds.
14. What des Dr. Firat Guder say abut use-by dates?
A. They are nt cmpletely reliable.B. They can help reduce fd waste.
C. They are based n scientific research.D. They are nt accepted by the cnsumers.
15. What des the authr mainly talk abut in the text?
A. The prcess f researching spilage sensrs.
B. A new technlgy in packaging t reduce fd waste.
C. The applicatin f spilage sensrs beynd fd prcessing.
D. The influence f use-by dates n supermarkets and cnsumers.
