I lst my sight at 18 due t an eye cnditin. By the third year f my math and stats degree, I’d decided that
      4 / 12
enugh was enugh — I wasn’t ging t tipte (蹑手蹑脚地走) thrugh life in cttn wl. Against the wishes f
my parents, I headed ff t Canada. I went there alne — just me and my blindness. That taught me yur wrld
becmes bigger when yu push yur limits.
In 2020, I tk part in a 220-mile hike acrss Nicaragua alngside 10 ther peple with disabilities fr a BBC
prgram. We had t wrk as a team t g acrss trpical rainfrests and a lake with sharks, as well as up a 5,000ft

      — it became all abut mental tughness.
Often, peple wh are sighted think they need t be gd at describing scenery, but they can just describe
what they see as a nrmal cnversatin. I lve it when peple give me the verview first; when yu lk at a
picture, yu dn’t see the little details straight away. As wrds g int my ears, they translate int beautiful pictures.
I’ll keep the imagery and mix it with ther sensry details. If I’m at Victria Falls, I’ll have the falls described t
me, and then feel the spray (水花) n my face. I hear the thunderus falls, and I’m aware f their smell. They’re all
feelings that add up t an incredible experience.
I had ne f my mst amazing experiences n a flating island in Lake Titicaca. I tk a grup in 2022, and
the indigenus peple had never met anybdy blind befre. When I tk anther grup a few weeks later, they’d
made a scale mdel f the island s that the blind culd tuch it. It desn’t matter where yu g, finding that
      cnnectin is priceless.
Fr blind peple, it’s natural t feel that the wrld has clsed fr yu, but when yu have a psitive mind,
      bstacles (障碍) becme pprtunities.
24.Hw did the authr prbably feel abut his life befre heading ff t Canada?
      A.Puzzled. B.Bred. C.Satisfied. D.Inspired.
25.What can be inferred abut the authr frm his hike in 2020?
A.He failed t get alng with ther peple.B.He was treated differently during the trip.
C.He trained hard t hike thrugh frests. D.He was tested physically and mentally.
26.Cmpared with nrmal peple, what may the authr think is his advantage in turing?
A.His cmbinatin f varius senses. B.His easy and relaxing schedule.
C.His rich wrds and expressins. D.His extrardinary imaginatin.
27.What can be learned frm the authr’s experience?

A new research by Stanfrd University psychlgy Prfessr Jeanne Tsai and her team suggests a key puzzle
invlves culture. The team examined the emtinal cntent f Twitter psts made by users in the United States and
      Japan.
Mst previus studies n scial media have fcused n Western users. In cntrast, the Stanfrd team
included a nn-Western cntext. “It just felt fr me that a piece is missing if yu dn’t cnsider culture,” said lead
authr and graduate student Tiffany Hsun. “Culture is such an imprtant aspect in terms f scial media and
      cnnecting peple.”
The research team analyzed thusands f tweets frm bth cuntries. They used a tl called SentiStrength
which scres texts based n psitivity, negativity, and emtinal intensity. Their analysis revealed clear cultural
patterns: American users generally prduce mre psitive and high-energy cntent (e.g., The cutest pictures are
frm Kindergarten graduatin! ♥), while Japanese users tend t pst messages with calmer, lwer-arusal emtins
      (e.g., Anther week f exams then I’m free ).
Hwever, the ppsite seemed t apply after users had been expsed t thers’ psts. “Users seemed t be
mst influenced by thers’ psts when thse psts cntained feelings against their cultural values.” explained Hsu,
“S fr the U. S., users are mst influenced by thers’ high arusal negative cntent like nervusness, but fr Japan,
users are mst influenced by thers’ high arusal psitive states like excitement.” The researchers described this
effect as “affective hijacking”, in which expsure t cntent that ges against users’ cultural values temprarily
      redirects their wn cntent.
Researchers aren’t ttally sure where these disruptive psts frm, but they nticed these psts ften spread
fake news r lies. This suggests t them that the cntent may be generated by peple attempting t mislead thers
r even by algrithms created t stir up disputes. They suggested that future develpments might include sftware
tls similar t junk email blckers.
28.What is the main purpse f the Stanfrd research?
A.T imprve tls fr checking text emtins.
B.T cmpare scial media habits in tw cuntries.
C.T prve fake news spreads faster acrss cultures.
D.T study hw culture affects nline emtinal psts.
29.Accrding t the study, American users tend t prduce psts with emtins like ________.
A.anger and anxiety B.sadness and depressin
      6 / 12
C.delight and excitement D.calmness and relaxatin
30.Why were Japanese users mre influenced by high-arusal psitive psts?
A.Such psts are cmmn in Japan. B.Their culture lacks interactin.
C.Such psts cnflict with their culture. D.Their culture values psitive emtins.
31.What scial prblem might “affective hijacking” cause?
A.Cnfusin f cultural identity amng yung users.
      B.Spread f nline rumrs and crss-culture cnflicts.
      C.Overlad f infrmatin n scial media platfrms.
D.Increase in cyberbullying based n cultural differences.

Research has fund that lneliness and scial islatin are assciated with an increased risk f cnditins
like anxiety, depressin, heart disease, and strke. In fact, a 2010 analysis fund that lneliness is as harmful t
physical health as smking 15 cigarettes a day — meaning using friendship t reduce lneliness is gd fr yu.
But hw many friends shuld yu have?
Accrding t Jeffrey Hall, a prfessr f cmmunicatin studies at the University f Kansas, if yu want t

better health thrughut their lives, and a study frm 2020 fund that middle-aged wmen wh have at least three
friends typically have higher levels f verall satisfactin with their lives.
T figure ut whether yu need mre friends in yur life, psychlgist Marisa Franc recmmends asking
yurself, “D I feel lnely?” Lneliness is srt f an alarm system. While everyne feels lnely smetimes, yu
shuld determine whether yu feel left ut r islated regularly.
Franc als recmmends asking yurself if there are parts f yur identity that yu feel are restricted.
“Different peple bring ut different parts f us. S when yu have a large friend grup, yu’re able t experience
this side f yurself that lves basketball, and that side f yurself that lves flwers,” Franc said. “If yu’re nt
feeling quite like yurself, that might indicate yu need different types f friends.”
Since making new friends can be difficult, Franc said it’s ften easier t rekindle ld relatinships. She
added that yu shuld take the initiative and nt assume that friendships will naturally happen.
      7 / 12
“Ultimately, there ‘isn’t a magic number’ f friends fr everyne,” Hall said. “Yur persnality and the
characteristics f yur life are ging t make a difference.”
32.What might Jeffrey Hall agree with?
A.Having just ne friend leads t mre happiness.
      B.Everyne’s ideal number f friends desn’t vary.
C.A brad friend netwrk enables strng cnnectins.
D.Friendship shuld be priritized in scial relatins.

      A.Cntinuus self-dubt. B.Few exciting experiences.
      C.Ineffective scial activities. D.Cnstant feelings f islatin.
35.What des Franc say abut having a large friend grup?
A.It requires befriending thse with shared values.
B.It ensures persnal grwth by wide scial circles.
C.It means a persn wn’t feel restricted any lnger.
D.It helps explre different aspects f ne’s persnality.
