On Nvember 23, 1942, the wrst fear came true. The Ben Lmnd was attacked by a U-bat. Within minutes the bat was sinking. Pn Lim grabbed a life jacket and leaped ver the side. He swam rapidly away frm the ship in case it explded. Sure enugh, it let ut a large bm and sank beneath the waves. Fr tw hurs Pn Lim struggled in the water. Once he almst gt nt a life raft with five ther sailrs, but it gt away frm his grasp. Then he saw anther life raft that was empty, swam t it, and climbed abard. He fund a few cans f biscuits, a water jug, sme flares, and a flashlight, which culd be enugh supplies fr abut a mnth.
Day after day Pn Lim had his few biscuits and a cuple f sips f water. He searched the hrizn fr ships. Twice he leaped up t shut and wave when he saw help cming. Once he saw a freight ship. It passed him. At a later time, he saw a United States Navy plane. It flew lw ver the raft but then disappeared. Still later a U-bat sptted him but fr sme reasn left him alne.
Pn Lim knew he needed t stay strng. He culdn’t get much exercise n an eight-ft-square raft, but he culd swim. A cuple f times a day, he circled the raft, always watching fr sharks. Sn his fd and water ran lw. He knew that drinking seawater wuld make him sick, s he tre ff the canvas cver n his life jacket and set it ut t catch rainwater. Then he tk apart the flashlight and used a wire inside t make a fishhk. Fr mnths Pn Lim drifted, catching fish and smetimes birds. One time he even caught a shark. Accrding t a recent study, cnsuming three largely cmparable meals each day t meet ur energy demands may be the mst effective methd t prevent cgnitive (认知的) deteriratin. The study finds a link between skipping breakfast and a gradual failure in cgnitive health. The study als reveals that eating mre calries at ne meal than anther is nt linked t a quick failure in cgnitive functin, but it des nt imprve cgnitin as much as eating balanced three meals daily.
With previus study fcusing n hw the quality f the fd we cnsume can affect ur health, there hasn’t been much research n hw ur daily energy intake is distributed and hw it can affect ur cgnitive health ver the lng term, as well as if it might affect ur risk f dementia (痴呆).
A recent study, in which the data frm the 1997 — 2006 China Health and Nutritin Survey were analyzed, examines the pssible impact f varius meal schedules n cgnitive decline in rder t better understand this.
The pll (民意调查) cllected submissins frm 3,342 persns in China during a ten-year perid, and their respnses were included in the statistics. The average age was 62. 2, and peple were at least 55 years ld. The study did nt include thse wh had severe cgnitive deteriratin.
Each participant underwent a dietary evaluatin as well as a phne-based cgnitive exam at the beginning f the study perid. This test evaluated each persn’s ability t recall wrds quickly and slwly, cunt backward, and subtract (减) quickly frm given numbers.
The findings demnstrate that in cmparisn t either less balanced ways f absrbing ne’s ttal calric intake r less equally distributed ways f ingesting ne’s ttal energy intake, eating three balanced meals each day is related with superir cgnitive functin.
28. What des the underlined wrd “deteriratin” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Increase. B. Decline.
C. Exchange.D. Spread.
29. What is the main difference between the recent study and the previus ne?
A. The cntents.B. The methd.
C. The participants.D. The prcess.
30. Hw did the researchers d the recent study?
A. By ding experiments.
B. By analyzing previus data.
C. By interviewing senir peple.
D. By examining peple with cgnitive disease.
31. Which f the fllwing may cntribute t best cgnitin?
A. Skipping breakfast every day.
B. Three balanced meals per day.
C. Hunger-determined fd time and amunt.
D. A big lunch with a small breakfast and dinner.

Running has lng been cnsidered ne f the mst efficient, cnvenient, and beneficial wrkuts. But sme claim yu get mre ut f the classic way f exercising with a new technique—r rather a 180-degree abut-face.
A study led by Dr. Gardner published in 2016 in the Jurnal f Strength and Cnditining backs this up. Researchers fund that running backwards benefited athletes by imprving their running ecnmy; by running backwards ver time the athletes became better runners verall.
Unlike frward running, which generally uses the muscles in the frnt f the leg, running backwards primarily uses the muscles f the bttm chain, especially the calf(腓)muscles and glutes. Dr. Gardner adds, “Within just a minute r tw f running backwards, yu’ll start t feel the burning in yur calves!”
Frankie Ruiz, a lngtime crss-cuntry running cach and chief running fficer explains that aside frm mving in reverse, running backwards differs frm regular running because it requires an entirely different cmbinatin f things t d crrectly.
Running backwards may be easier n the knees. “In a backwards mvement, the set f muscles invlved in absrbing the impact in the lwer level are ppsite. Yur lwer leg muscles are ding mst f the absrbing, thereby placing less stress n the knees. Running backwards will recruit lesser utilized muscles resulting in muscle grwth and tning,” says Ruiz.
In additin t using different muscles than running frwards, running backwards enhances balance and psture, “as it frces yu t stay in a mre upright psitin,” Gardner says.
As t claims that running backwards can burn mre calries than frward running, Gardner says it’s nt s black and white. Lts f factrs (including heart rate, age, and thers) affect hw many calries yu burn during any particular activity. “Different muscle pattern usage desn’t necessarily burn mre calries. It is the intensity(强度)that matters mst,” she pints ut.
Because running backwards causes mre muscle activity than running frwards, hwever, Gardner ntes it makes sense that ne might burn mre calries, but there’s nt cnclusive data n exact calrie cnsumptin differences.
32. What is the benefit f running backwards?
A. It cmbines varius muscles.
B. It can better athletes’ perfrmance.
C. It frees the frnt muscles f the leg.
D. It gets calf muscles and glutes burned.
33. Why is Ruiz’s pinin n running backwards mentined?
A. T state mre f its advantages.
B. T share his persnal preference.
C. T shw its prmising develpment.
D. T intrduce detailed guidance n it.
34. What can we learn frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. Calries cnsumptin is difficult t measure.
B. Using different muscles can burn mre calries.
C. The amunt f calries burning depends n many aspects.
D. Running backwards burns mre calries than running frwards.
35. Wh wuld benefit mst frm this passage?
A. Nutritinists pursuing a balanced diet.
B. Patients hping t cure their injured knees.
C. Caches intending t better their training methds.
D. Runners seeking t imprve their ecnmical situatin.

Nichlas Epley, a behaviural scientist, and I cnducted a series f studies and cncluded that kind acts as simple as buying a cup f cffee fr smene can prmte a persn’s happiness. Everyday life affrds many pprtunities fr such actins, yet peple d nt always catch them. ____36____
We firstly studied acts f kindness dne fr familiar peple such as friends, classmates r family. ____37____ Fr instance, in ne experiment, peple wrte ntes t friends and family “just because”. In anther, they gave cupcakes away t wrkmates. Acrss these experiments, we asked bth the persn perfrming a kind act and the ne receiving it t fill ut questinnaires (问卷).
Acrss ur studies, several strng patterns appeared. Fr ne, bth perfrmers and receivers f the acts f kindness were in mre psitive mds than nrmal after these kind acts. ____38____ The receivers felt significantly better than the kind actrs expected. The receivers als reliably rated these acts as “bigger” than the peple perfrming them did.
____39____In ne experiment, participants at an ice-skating rink (溜冰场) in a public park gave away ht chclate t peple they didn’t knw n a cld winter day. Again, the experience was mre psitive than the perfrmers expected fr the receivers. Althugh the peple giving ut the ht chclate saw the act as relatively small, it really mattered t the receivers.
These findings suggest that what might seem small when we are deciding whether r nt t d smething nice fr smene else culd matter a great deal t the persn we d it fr. These warm acts can imprve ur wn emtinal health and brighten the day f anther persn. ____40____
A. S why nt chse kindness when we can?
B. Fr anther, it was clear that perfrmers undervalued their impacts.
C. Frm ne situatin t the next, the specific acts f kindness differed.
D We fund that participants didn’t realize their psitive impacts n strangers as well.
E. Our research als revealed ne reasn why peple may nt realize their actins’ impacts.
F. We cmpared the perfrmers’ expectatin f the receivers’ mds with their actual experiences.
G. It is because peple perfrming kind acts undervalue hw much receivers value their behaviur.
