We knw that reading is gd fr children and fr adults as well. Nw a new study suggests that just being
arund bks has its benefits — even if yu dn’t read them a lt. A team f researchers in Australia finds that
grwing up in a hme with a sizable library imprves literacy, number sense and even technlgical knwledge in
later life.
The researchers were interested in what is called the “Radiatin Effect”. “Radiatin Effect” is a situatin
where children grw up arund bks, even thugh they dn’t read them as much as their parents wuld like them
t. But smehw bks benefit them.
Janna Sikra, a scilgist at the Australian Natinal University, and her clleagues studied data cllected
between 2011 and 2015. The survey tested mre than 160,000 adults frm 31 different scieties, and it included a
questin abut hw many bks testers had in their hmes during adlescence (青春期的).
“We fund that peple wh grew up arund bks had better literacy, numeracy and digital prblem-slving
skills than peple wh had fewer bks grwing up but had similar educatin levels, similar jbs and even similar
adult habits.” In fact, teens wh nly made it thrugh high schl but were raised in a bkish envirnment were
successful as well in adulthd as cllege graduates wh grew up in a huse lacking bks.
“S if we grw up in a huse, in a hme where parents enjy bks, where bks are given as birthday
presents and cherished and valued, this is smething that becmes a part f ur identity and gives us this lifelng
influence t imprve ur reading and writing ability.” said Sikra.

Clthing rental is a ht new industry and retailers are demanding t get n bard in hpes f attracting green
shppers.
But is renting fashin actually mre envirnmentallyfriendly than buying it, and if s, hw much mre?
Jurnalist and authr Elizabeth Cline investigated this questin and cncluded that it's nt as sustainable as it
seems.
Take shipping, fr example, which has t g tw ways if an item is rented—receiving and returning. Cline
writes that cnsumer transprtatin has the secnd largest carbn ftprint f ur cllective fashin habit after
manufacturing.
She writes, "An item rdered nline and then returned can send ut 20 kilgrams f carbn each way, and
increases up t 50 kilgrams fr rush shipping. By cmparisn, the carbn impact f a pair f jeans purchased frm
a physical stre and washed and wrn at hme is 33.4 kilgrams, accrding t a 2015 study by Levi's."
Then there's the burden f washing, which has t happen fr every item when it's returned, regardless f
whether r nt it was wrn. Fr mst rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and plluting
prcess. All the rental services that Cline lked int have replaced perchlrethylene, an air pllutant that causes
cancers, still used by 70 percent f US dry cleaners, with alternatives, althugh these aren't great, either.
Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase ur appetite fr fast fashin, simply because it's s easily
accessible. There's smething called "share washing" that makes peple waste mre precisely because a prduct r
service is shared and thus is regarded as mre ecfriendly. Uber is ne example f this, advertised as "a way t
7 / 12
share rides and limit car wnership." and yet "it has been prven t discurage walking, bicycling, and public
transprtatin use."
Renting clthes is still preferable t buying them cheap and thrwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but
we shuldn't let the availability f these services make us t satisfied. There's an even better step—that's wearing
what is already in the clset.
32.What is Elizabeth Cline's attitude tward clthing rental?
A.Apprving. B.Unfavrable. C.Objective. D.Enthusiastic.
33.The Uber example in paragraph 6 indicates that ________.
A.rental services are n the rise
B.clthing rental will be as successful as Uber
C.renting clthes might waste mre than expected
D.renting clthes might make peple lse interest in fast fashin
34.The authr suggests that we shuld ________.
A.give up renting any clthing B.purchase inexpensive clthes
C.rent clthes rather than buy them D.make full use f clthes we've pssessed
35.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.Clthing rental is a new fashin. B.Clthing rental is retailers' preference.
C.Renting clthes is nt that ecfriendly. D.Rentingclthes business is in a dilemma.

FOMO stands fr “fear f missing ut”. It refers t the nervus r anxius feeling a persn gets when they
realize they are nt attending a scial event either because they weren't invited r they just didn't feel like ging.
36 This belief, in turn, can create nervusness and a sense f inferirity. FOMO bthers mst teens, especially
if they're ften nline.
One way fr teens t deal with FOMO is t practice what is knwn as reframing thinking. It's a mental
exercise aimed at helping them lk at situatins differently. 37
Pay attentin t negative thughts and replace them with psitive nes. One thing teens can d t deal with
FOMO is t put dwn their negative thughts and feelings in a diary. 38 Then, they remind themselves t try
t see things frm a different angle and in an active way.
8 / 12
39 Encurage teens t understand that they have limited time and cannt pssibly be everywhere and d
everything. Therefre, it is natural that there will be scial events that they cannt attend. But this des nt mean
that they're necessarily missing ut n smething.
Turn ff the technlgy and d smething else. Turning ff the technlgy seems like a natural slutin t
FOMO. But just switching the phne ff des nt erase the feelings that FOMO causes. 40 The key is t d
smething else entirely like reading a bk r baking ckies — anything that allws them t fcus n smething
ther than scial media.
A.Be realistic abut availability.
B.There are sme negative results f FOMO.
C.Realize that n ne lives a perfect life as described in scial media.
D.Here are sme tips n hw teens can start t reshape their thught.
E.In general, FOMO causes peple t think that they are nt scially imprtant.
F.Teens may still wrry abut missing ut even if they're nt in scial media at all.
G.This allws them t see hw ften they're feeling terrible abut themselves.
