Here cmes a time fr every family when the tables turn and the parent has t answer t the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I visited ur sn in Ls Angeles.
“Dad, dn’t leave the water running when yu brush yur teeth,” Nathaniel admnished n ur first night. All right, I figured, this is Califrnia, where drught is a cncern. But then mre fllwed. Nt t leave my awkward walking shes sitting ut, and did I even need such ugly ftwear? Dn’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dgs in the mrning - it will warm up when we get t the park. And d yu have t take a shwer befre we drive t Tpanga?
At the beginning, I wndered hw I raised such a bssy child. But I recalled my wn wrds when he was yung: “Smeday, yu’ ll have yur wn hme and can live hwever yu want. Until then, d as we say.” Nw,it was payback time.
I remembered being angry at my wn father’s cmmands grwing up, hw he always tidied my desk r came int my rm at dusk t clse the windws. And s I smilingly fllwed Nathaniel’ s nagging (唠叨).
On ur last afternn, we were walking alng ElMatadr Beach and hit an extended patch f rcks - clearly the end f the line, I thught. Nathaniel wuldn’t hear f it and encuraged me t walk acrss ne largest ne t the next, patiently telling me where t place my arthritic (关节炎的) feet and hands as cean waves came clse. I was terrified, but after a cuple hundred yards we eventually reached a fresh sandy beach.

There are millins — pssibly billins — f pnds (池塘).Yet fr a century r s, they are prly understd and scientists have paid them very little attentin. This neglect (忽视) might nt have mattered if it were nt fr increasing evidence that pnds are extremely imprtant habitats fr wildlife.
Pnds are being shwn mre bi-diverse than rivers r lakes. Interestingly, this seems t be partly due t the small size f pnds, which allws them t have a wide range f cnditins. The cmmunity in a pnd with clear water will be very different t that in a nearby seasnal pnd made cludy by farm animals. Pnds shw far greater variatin than rivers and streams, as flwing water tends t equalize water chemistry.
S why have we ignred such a vital part f the natural wrld? A key reasn appears t be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if smething is small, it can’t be all that imprtant. Rather than study pnds, scientists in the past typically headed fr the largest lake r river they culd find.
Mst f us als devalue pnds because we assume they are artificial habitats: we lk at the human-made examples arund us and dn’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient rigin. In ur new bk Pnds, Pls and Puddles, we shw that pnds have clearly existed n Earth as lng as there has been land and water and the gelgical recrd shws they have been a cnstant presence.
Nw, views are taking n new shapes. Last year, the Ramsar Cnventin, an internatinal agreement, intrduced a prpsal n small wetlands, including pnds, giving crucial recgnitin t them. And the Eurpean Unin-funded PONDER FUL prject is gathering data n Eurpe’s pnds.
In a wrld where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and prtecting pnds prvides a ray f hpe: a piece f natural eclgical (生态的) engineering we can easily achieve t help supprt ne f the mst threatened bits f the envirnment.
8. What may cntribute t the bidiversity f pnds?
A. The nearby animals.B. The cnstant temperature water.
C. Their diverse cnditins.D. Their regularly changing cnditins.
9. What caused pnds t be neglected?
A. Peple’s lve fr nature.B. Insufficient pnds fr research.
C. Peple’s mistaken belief f pnds.D. Lacking scientific research methds.
10. Why is “PONDERFUL prject” mentined?
A. T prmte the Ramsar Cnventin.
B. T prepare fr the research n pnds
C. T highlight the imprtance f small wetlands.
D. T shw the changing attitudes twards pnds.
11. What can we cnclude frm the last paragraph?
A. Penny wise, pund flish.B. A small key pens a big dr.
C. Small streams make great riversD. A bird in the hand is wrth tw in the bush.
D
Is it true that ur brain alne is respnsible fr human cgnitin (认知)? What abut ur bdy? Is it pssible fr thught and behaviur t riginate frm smewhere ther than ur brain? Psychlgists wh study Embdied Cgnitin (EC) ask similar questins. The EC thery suggests ur bdy is als respnsible fr thinking r prblem-slving.
If yu think abut it fr a mment, it makes ttal sense. When yu smell smething gd r hear amusing sunds, certain emtins are awakened. Think abut hw newbrns use their senses t understand the wrld arund them. They dn’t have emtins s much as needs— they dn’t feel sad, they’ re just hungry and need fd. Even unbrn babies can feel their mthers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real wrld, they cry when they’ re cld and then get hugged. That way, they start t assciate being warm with being lved.
Understandably, therists have been arguing fr years and still disagree n whether the brain is the nerve centre that perates the rest f the bdy. Older Western philsphers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC thery hlds the view that the brain and bdy are wrking tgether as an rganic supercmputer, prcessing everything and frming yur reactins.
Further studies have backed up the mind-bdy interactin, In ne experiment, test subjects were asked t judge peple after being handed a ht r a cld drink. They all made warm evaluatins when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than clness. And it wrks the ther way t. In anther study. subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in r “rejected” frm a grup task. Thse wh were included felt physically warmer.
Fr further prf, we can lk at the metaphrs (比喻) that we use withut even thinking. A kind and sympathetic persn is frequently referred t as ne with a sft heart and smene wh is very strng and calm in difficult situatins is ften described as slid as a rck. And this kind f metaphrical use is cmmn acrss languages.
Nw that yu have the knwledge f mind-bdy interactin, why nt put the EC thery in ur daily life?Just give it a sht!
12. Accrding t the authr, what is the significance f EC?
A. It brings us clser t the truth in human cgnitin.
B. It ffers a clearer picture f the shape f human brain.
C. It reveals the majr rle f the mind in human cgnitin.
D. It imprves ur understanding f the rigin f psychlgy.
13. Where des the newbrns’ understanding f their surrundings start frm?
A. Their persnal lks.B. Their mental needs.
C. Their inner emtins.D. Their physical feelings.
14. What des the authr intend t prve by using the metaphrs in Paragraph 5?
A. Human speech is alive with metaphrs.
B. Human senses have effects n thinking.
C Human language is shaped by visual images.
D. Human emtins are ften cmpared t natural materials.
15. Which f the fllwing situatins is NOT the usage f EC in ur daily life?
A. If yu are angry, think twice befre actin.
B. If yu are cld, warm up befre making any interpersnal decisins.
C. If the baby is crying hard, gentle tuch frm mm will calm him a bit.
D. If yur friend is having a bad day, a warm cup f tea will give her a flash f pleasure.
