When I bught a huse in Prtland fur years ag, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending t remve the weeds and plant sme vegetables r lng-lasting flwers. I sn discvered, hwever, that the sil was unprductive, clay-heavy and littered with stnes. In previus, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags f high-quality sil frm the nursery.
Replacing this vastly greater quantity f dirt was neither practical nr financially pssible. Instead, I decided t remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge befre me was t revive the sil. Tw cre principles f mdern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing sil disturbance and emphasizing bidiversity. In practice, grwing crps by turns; priritizing rganic inputs ver chemical fertilizers; integrating crps, trees and livestck; and sheltering sil frm being washed away with cver crps, ften wrk.
I tried t apply such methds in my garden. Where nce there was nly grass, I made a pnd, a rck garden, a wildflwer field and raised beds fr vegetables. I let plants grw and decmpse by themselves in a natural way. I als intrduced different plants and revived its eclgical cmmunities.
In May, I decided t relcate a flwering plant. As I dug the plant ut, all manner f life emerged. Earthwrms swung frm the rts. A daddy lnglegs hurried fr shelter. Belw the plant I even nticed the fine white fungal mycelium (真菌菌丝).
Running my fingers thrugh the sil, I understd, mre clearly than ever befre, that I transfrmed much mre than my yard - it cmpletely changed the way I think abut sil. It’s nt simply as a medium fr life, but as a living entity (个体) in its wn right. Althugh science still lacks an agreed definitin f life, textbks highlight criteria widely cnsidered t differentiate the living and nnliving. Sil meets many f them: It has a highly rganized structure. It has a capacity fr active self-preservatin. It grws. It breathes. And it can die.
24.What was the sil prblem in the authr’s garden?
A.Wet and salty.B.Pr and stny.
C.Dry and sandy.D.Acidic and weedy.
25.What was the fcus f the authr’s gardening methds?

A.T intrduce different species.B.T prve the garden shelters insects.
C.T shw the sil has cme t life.D.T explain the transplanting prcess.

A.Sil has a sul.B.Life is well defined.
C.Life has cmplexity.D.Sil is the surce f life.

Past research has shwn the negative effects f t much sugar intake n health, which has infrmed recmmendatins t limit cnsumptin f “free” r added sugar t less than 10% f a persn’s daily calric intake.
Still, researchers in China and the United States felt that befre develping detailed plicies fr sugar restrictin, the quality f existing evidence needs t be cmprehensively evaluated, accrding t a study published in the jurnal The BMJ.
In a big study that lked at 73 reviews and 8,601 smaller studies, eating a lt f added sugar was linked t a much higher chance f 45 bad health prblems, including diabetes (糖尿病), besity, high bld pressure, heart attack, cancer, depressin, and early death.
Free sugars are thse added during the prcessing f fds, packaged as table sugar, and naturally ccurring in hney, fruit juice, vegetable juice and similar prducts in which the cellular (细胞的) structure f the fd has been brken dwn, accrding t the FDA.This categry des nt include sugars naturally ccurring in dairy r structurally whle fruits and vegetables.
“Whle fd carbhydrates (碳水化合物) take lnger t break dwn int simple sugars,” said Dr. Maya Adam, a prfessr at Stanfrd University Schl f Medicine. “This means that whle grains dn’t cause the same increases in bld sugar that we experience when we eat simple sugars. Bld sugar increases are the basic cause f health prblems in the lng run.”
The findings suggest peple shuld circumscribe free sugar intake t less than 25 grams per day. There are sme changes yu can make. Be aware f what yu’re putting in yur bdy by reading nutritin labels when shpping — even the nes n fds yu might nt think f as sweet, such as bread and ygurts. These fds usually have lts f added sugar, and it adds up, Adam said.
Cking and baking at hme mre ften is ne f the best ways t reduce sugar intake, said Brke Aggarwal, a prfessr at Clumbia University Irving Medical Center. Getting enugh gd-quality sleep n a regular basis wuld als help “as we tend t chse fds higher in sugar when we’re tired,” she added.
All in all, we shuld cut back n ur cnsumptin f added sugar t less than 10% f a persn’s daily calric intake. After all, eating t much “free sugar” has many negative health effects.
28.What needs t be dne befre making detailed plicies t restrict sugar?
A.Make a detailed categry.B.Investigate the sugar market.
C.Check the existing evidence.D.Mnitr prducts cntaining sugar.
29.What can be inferred frm Dr. Maya Adam’s wrds in paragraph 5?
A.Whle grains are mre nutritius.B.Whle fd carbhydrates dn’t break.
C.The rise f bld sugar is a lng prcess.D.Simple sugars raise bld sugar rapidly.
30.What des the underlined wrd “circumscribe” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Limit.B.Increase.C.Ignre.D.Prmte.
31.What is the authr’s attitude t the cnsumptin f added sugar?
A.Supprtive.B.Critical.C.Dubtful.D.Cautius.
D
“Neurns (神经元) that fire tgether, wire tgether.” Perhaps yu have heard this ft-quted phrase f psychlgist Dnald Hebb and wndered what it means.
T find this ut, yu need t understand “neurplasticity“ first. Yur brain can change, and that prcess is called neurplasticity. Stimuli (刺激) cause a respnse and changes in yur brain. The stimuli can be external, such as taking up a new hbby, r internal, such as a glfer imagining the perfect putt (推杆) just befre actually stepping up and putting. Every time yur brain respnds t stimuli, an electrical impulse (脉冲) causes either the frmatin f a new synaptic (突触的) cnnectin r the strengthening f an existing cnnectin. This is what Hebb meant with his thery abut firing and wiring tgether. By cntrast, if yu stp ding an activity, the synaptic cnnectin can reduce thrugh a lack f use.
There is a healthy cmpetitin always ging n inside yur brain t maintain synaptic cnnectins. This is healthy because the cnnectins being used “win” and maintain their strength. Strng cnnectins make a task easier.
This cmpetitin helps explain why 10, 000 hurs f practice is presented as a path t expertise. Yu will have repeated an actin s ften and fr s lng that it simply becmes secnd nature and feels effrtless. In cmparisn, trying a task fr the first time, r picking up an ld task after a lng break, can feel challenging r energy-cnsuming at first. Why? Because the synaptic cnnectins dn’t exist r have weakened. Yu have t wrk harder t perfrm that task.
The gd news is that yur healthy brain-at any age-can learn, grw, and adapt t the changing wrld arund yu. Stated differently, the ld idea that yu peak by 40 r 45 and frm that pint nwards, yur mind and life g dwnhill is nt supprted by 30 years f neurscientific research revealing a very different stry abut yur brain’s cntinued grwth and develpment thrugh all ages. Simply put, yu can be mre adaptive and resilient (有复原力的) thrughut yur entire life if yu make the right chices and take psitive actins.
32.What des paragraph 2 mainly discuss?
A.Hw Hebb’s thery wrks.B.Where stimuli cme frm.
C.Hw an electrical impulse happens.D.Why neurplasticity causes synaptic cnnectin.
33.Which f the fllwing reflects neurplasticity?
A.Rme wasn’t built in a day.B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Every clud has a silver lining.D.United we stand, divided we fall.
34.What causes beginners t find new tasks hard accrding t paragraph 4?
A.A lack f synaptic cnnectins.
B.Limited access t necessary infrmatin.
C.Pr preparatin fr ptential difficulties.
D.The huge amunt f energy required fr the tasks.
35.What can be cncluded frm years f neurscientific research?
A.Mental decline is unavidable.
B.Peple becme less adaptive as they age.
C.Peple can have lifelng brain develpment.
D.Strng adaptability helps peple stay psitive.

As she rtated the signbard t display “Clsed”, preparing t cnfrnt yet anther deslate hliday celebratin, she bserved a male individual seated n the frigid steps utside. He appeared t be in the latter part f his furth decade, attired in garments that had seen better days, his cuntenance etched with the marks f arduus experiences. He raised his gaze, his eyes mirrring a blend f fatigue and unviced adversities. “Pardn me, Madam,” he uttered in a lw vice, “I have been deprived f a prper and satisfying meal fr several days. Wuld it be pssible fr yu t spare a small prtin?” Emily paused mmentarily but prmptly unlcked the dr, gesturing warmly t invite him in. “It is Thanksgiving Eve,” she declared with an amiable smile, “N individual ught t experience hunger n this particular day.”
The male, wh identified himself as James, expressed his gratitude and tk a seat near the crner windw. As James partk f the meal, he shared fragments f his life stry — he had previusly been a truck driver, but had unfrtunately lst his ccupatin, which subsequently led t the lss f his dwelling place and cmpelled him t wander frm ne lcatin t anther. Emily listened with rapt attentin, experiencing an unfreseen surge f empathetic sentiment as she established a cnnectin with this unfamiliar persn.
Upn the cnclusin f the meal, James delved int his wrn-ut uter garment and prduced a diminutive, meticulusly flded paper crane. “I crafted this an extended perid ag,” he mentined in a gentle tne. “It is the final ne in my pssessin.
