Mr. Myrus was always perfectly dressed and spke with the belief that talking t an eight-year-ld child didn’t mean he had t sacrifice apprpriate statements r grammar. And he was demanding,but he wasn’t unreasnable r cruel. He simply felt that n matter what yur best was, yu shuld achieve it.
Luckily enugh, I met him again as my eighth grade math teacher. I was nt, nr ever will be, gifted in math. I remember my struggles in class. “I dn’t knw the answer,” I wuld say. “I can’t d it!” “Perhaps yu dn’t knw the answer,” he wuld say quietly. “D yu think we might figure it ut tgether? Hw d yu knw what yu can d if yu dn’t have a try?”
Mr. Myrus lived arund the cmer, and I wuld ften stp by t talk while he wrked in his garden. I knew there was smene wh let me knw that if I had really tried, that was enugh. “Dn’t be s hard n yurself,” he,d say. “Stp blaming yurself. Did yu try yur best? Well, then yu? are nt a failure,” he ften tld me these wrds.
Mr. Myrus died in 1978. I had never thught abut his death. He was t yung. I felt srry. But when I think abut him nw, I dn’t feel s srry. He taught me t be kind, nt nly t thers, but t myself. He taught me my wn value. He taught me smething abut hnr, abut truth, and abut ding my best and he als taught me that all feelings and beliefs have dignity and deserve respect. And f all the things I knw, I believe that we can’t all be “the best”,but we can, each f us, be ur best. And I knw that’s true because Mr. Myrus tld me that.
