Afternn tea, the mst typical f English custms, is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new traditin. The custm f drinking tea became ppular in England during the 1660s thanks t King Charles II and his wife, and it was nt until the mid-19th century that the cncept f “afternn tea” first appeared.
Afternn tea was intrduced by Anna, the Duchess f Bedfrd, in the year 1840. At that time lunch was taken early but the evening meal was served fashinably late at eight ’clck, leaving a lng perid f time between the tw meals.
