    China is remving ne f the wrld’s mst trafficked (非法买卖) animals, the panglin, frm its list f animals used fr traditinal medicine.
    Panglins, despite being cvered in scales (鳞片), grw t arund the size f a huse cat. Their scales are made f keratin——the same material fund in fingernails. They use thse scales t prtect themselves frm enemies in the wild, but in Asia, these same scales are traded fr medicine. Tens f thusands are killed every year, and ne millin panglins are believed t have been trafficked between 2000 and 2013. Last year, authrities seized mre than 130 tns f panglin-related prducts, a figure believed t represent as many as 400, 000 f the animals, accrding t WildAid cnservatin grup.
    There are eight species f panglin fund acrss Asia and Africa. Three f thse are listed as seriusly endangered by the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature(IUCN): the Chinese panglin, the Philippine panglin and the Sunda panglin. The remaining five are listed as either vulnerable r endangered.
    Nw, three species——the Chinese, Sunda and Indian panglin——have been affrded the same prtectin in China as the Giant Panda and have been upgraded frm Class II t the highest Class I prtectin. There’s a punishment f 10 years f imprisnment fr anyne caught hunting, killing r trading them.
    The annuncement was made in June. The Chinese gvernment has als annunced plans t recver the diminishing ppulatins by imprving field patrls (巡逻) and pushing habitat recvery effrts.

    Nrth Atlantic right whales nw grw smaller than they did 40 years ag, and new research suggests a leading cause is the damage that human activity has dne t the critically endangered species.
    The findings, published in the jurnal Current Bilgy, reveal that when fully grwn, a Nrth Atlantic right whale brn tday wuld be expected t be abut ne meter shrter than a whale brn in 1980. Currently, full-grwn members f the species average 13 t 14 meters in length.
    Researchers used high-reslutin phtgraphs t ’track size and bdy cnditin f 129 right whales. Their research indicated that a majr reasn fr the animals’ recent grwth prblem is entanglement (缠绕) in rpe and fishing equipment.
    Nrth Atlantic right whales typically mve up and dwn the Eastern seabard, frm Flrida t Canada. In recent years, mre than half the ppulatin can be fund frm late winter t early spring ff the cast f Cape Cd, where they sail thrugh a deadly maze (迷宫) f rpe and fishing equipment.
    Entanglements in the equipment can lead t life-threatening infectins, starvatin, r drwning (溺水). Even when they dn’t kill the whales, they can cause lng-term harm, the researchers fund. When the whales get caught in fishing equipment and end up dragging it arund, it frces them t expend mre energy fighting t survive, instead f grwing r reprducing. Nt nly des entanglement cntribute t reduced bdy size fr an individual whale, but female Nrth Atlantic right whales entangled while nursing prduce smaller babies. That threatens the reppulatin f a species with s few remaining members.
    In respnse, cnservatinists say managers f fishing grunds need t better manage the fishing grunds, whse equipment n the seaflr is cnsidered the primary cause f entanglements. One ptential answer is greater investment in the develpment and testing f rpeless fishing technlgy.
    “There is n time t wait,” researchers said. “The species can’t tlerate any further impacts, r it will have n future.”
