I was wrking the vernight shift in a remte hspital in the Rcky Muntains. Late in the evening, a yung African teenager was brught int the emergency department. He lived at sea level and had never been in the muntains. After skiing all day, he felt really ill. Everyne assumed it was altitude sickness.
He was sweating and had abdminal (腹部的) pain. His heart rate increased. We sent ff his lab wrk, and his bld sugar came back at almst 600 — nrmal is less than 100. His platelets (血小板), necessary fr stpping bleeding, came in at 10,000; they shuld have been ver 150,000. I did an ultrasund f his abdmen, and it lked like his belly was full f bld. This teenager didn't knw he had it, but the effect f the altitude n his bld cells was s extreme that after just a shrt time in the muntains, he suffered great pain.
He needed platelets immediately, but we didn't have enugh at the remte hspital. And there was a snwstrm, s the medical helicpters culdn't fly. It was a scary night. Just as we were abandning all hpe, we met an ambulance that drve halfway up frm the city with bld prducts and transferred him t the city hspital fr emergency surgery. The stry has a happy ending: He recvered fully.
