When I was little, I used to be afraid of the dark. I always thought that there was a ghost in my closet(壁橱). Houses often made strange noises at night. Sometimes I could feel eyes watching me and I was afraid to move. I thought that if I didn’t move, “they” wouldn’t get me. Usually when this happened, I wanted to go to the bathroom. So before going there I would be huddling(缩作一团) under my quilt, trying to build up the courage for scary night-time trip to the bathroom.
My fear of the dark left me when I was in my early teens. I had a dream. In my dream, I saw this ghost. He was right in front of me. I somehow found the courage. I was so angry with him that I beat him. This dream was so exciting that I can still remember it. After this dream, my fear of the dark was gone. I’m not afraid of the dark or anything else anymore.

Born in 1968, Li was the 4th of 5 children born to factory workers in Yangquan of Shanxi Province in China. Back then, Yangquan was an underdeveloped city that did not offer much to its people. Like most of the kids in the neighborhood, Li spent his childhood in hardships.
His mother, however, encouraged him to stay hopeful for a better tomorrow. He grew up remembering his mother’s words, “If you want a better life in the future, you will have to study hard and make sure you get into the best college.”

During the Jin Dynasty(265—420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was intelligent and loved reading. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies(萤火虫)outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same period also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of the two kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit and their stories inspired the Chinese idiom “nangying yingxue(囊萤映雪)”, or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.
In the past, people had a harder time studying than we do now. They had to copy books by hand because books were valuable back then. For poor families, paper and writing brushes were too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these difficult situations did not stop young minds from pursuing(追求)knowledge.
11.What did Che Yin enjoy doing when he was a kid?
12.How could Che Yin read during summer nights even though he couldn’t afford lamp oil?
13.When did Sun Kang live?
14.Did Che and Sun achieve success when they grew up?
15.What have you learned from Che Yin’s and Sun Kang’s stories?

Do you often put off doing something that you should be doing? It’s a bad habit called procrastination(拖延症). Most of the tasks that you procrastinate on aren’t actually difficult to do—you have the skills to complete them—you just don’t want to start them for one reason or another.
2-Minute Rule is a method of dealing with the problem and the goal is to make it easier for you to get, started on the things you should be doing. It includes two parts. Part One comes from David Allen’s book, Getting Things Done. It’s surprising how many things we put off that we could get done in two minutes or less, for example, taking out the litter, cleaning up your desk and sending an email. If a task takes less than two minutes to complete, then follow the rule and do it right now.
Can all of your goals be achieved in less than two minutes? Of course not. But, every goal can be started in 2 minutes or less. And that’s the purpose behind the rule’s second part. Once you start doing something, it’s easier to continue doing it. The most important part of any new habit is getting started—not just the first time, but each time. I love the 2-Minute Rule because it accepts the idea that all good things happen once you get started.
Want to become a better writer? Just write one sentence(2-Minute Rule), and you’ll be likely to find yourself writing for an hour.
Want to make reading a habit? Just read the first page of a new book(2-Minute Rule), and before you know it, you’ve read the first ten pages.
Use next 120 seconds to get one thing done. Go!
16.What can 2-Minute Rule help us to do?(No more than 10 words)
17.What does the writer think is the most important part of a new habit?(No more than 10 words)
18.Can all of your goals be achieved in less than two minutes?
19.What do the two examples at the end of the passage try to tell us?(No more than 10 words)
20.What have you learned from the passage?(No more than 20 words)

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the creators of Google, want to change your world. Their goal is to make a search engine that always gives you the right information. “It’s a huge goal, Page says, and it’s a long way off.” But Page and Brin are ready for it.
“Imagine if you had a librarian who had the knowledge of Google but could also answer immediately with that knowledge,” says Page. “That would really change the world.”
Both Page and Brin come from math and computer science backgrounds. Page’s father and mother were both computer scientists. So Page’s love for computers started early. He remembers surprising his teachers when he turned in a typed homework paper in primary school.
Brin’s father was a math teacher and Brin’s parents moved to the U.S. from Russia in 1979. Brin says they moved to the U.S. to have more chances. Judging from their son’s success, their move certainly was a great decision!
Page and Brin were students at Stanford University when they first had the idea of creating their now-famous Google search engine. They began the project in Page’s dorm room(宿舍). Brin says he knew Google would be great when he found that he used it all the time.
After collecting money from friends and family, they put Google on the market in 1998. At first, they did 10,000 searches daily. Today they do over 200 million searches—more than 50 percent of all Internet searches.
Both men have surprisingly simple lifestyles. They don’t live in large houses or own expensive cars. Page and Brin also work very hard. They say that setting up a restaurant at their company was one of their best ideas. Why? Because they work such long hours that they end up eating most of their meals there! Page and Brin strongly believe that search engines can greatly improve people’s lives.
21.What is Google?
22.What made Page’s love for computers start more early than other children?

(2022春·内蒙古通辽·九年级校联考期中)When William Erasmus Darvin was born in December 1839, his father Charles Darwin began to carefully record observations of his firstborn in a notebook. Now housed at Cambridge University Library, it reads more like a research paper.
Today we know a good deal about Darwin’s theories. We know far less about how his private life—particularly his family—contributed to his work. But his notebook shows another side of the founding father of evolution: Darwin as a family man.
Darwin’s son William was born a year after the scientist first met London Zoo’s first orangutan(猩猩), Jenny. “The orangutan for Darwin was like a window into the origins of mankind,” says John van Wyhe, director of Darwin Online.
At this time, Darwin was already forming ideas about where humans came from, but he had never met one of our close ape(猿) relatives to test these theories. His meeting with Jenny helped build up his idea that we shared a common ancestor(祖先) with apes. He was already looking for a “real relationship between humans and apes”, says van Wyhe. When he saw Jenny’s facial expressions and noticed her social behavior, he knew his ideas were right.
What stood out to him was how human-like some of her behavior was, which he wrote about in a letter to his sister Susan: “The keeper showed her an apple, but would not give it to her, whereupon she threw herself on her back, kicked and cried, just like a naughty child.”
When his son was born soon after, it meant that he could see first-hand how a human child developed, and consider the relationship between humans and animals. “The notebook shows Darwin as a good-humoured though curious father who is playing with his young baby like he is another ape,” says van Wyhe.
His observations about both his family and Jenny the ape went on to influence his 1871 book. The Descen of Man and The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, published in 1872.

(2023春·全国·九年级期中)Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254. When he was 17, he travelled across Europe and Asia along the Silk Road with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. Finally they arrived in Beijing. They were guests at the Emperor’s Palace. Although Marco was young, he was very clever and could speak four languages. The Emperor was impressed by him and they became friends. He asked Marco to serve in his court and sent him to do many important tasks across the country.
Marco was amazed by how beautiful and powerful China was. He was impressed by Beijing and the Emperor’s Palace, especially the Summer Palace which he described as “The greatest palace that ever was ... After 17 years of service to the Emperor, Marco returned to Italy. He was then a very wealthy man. A writer wrote down all the stories that Marco had told him in a book called The Travels of Marco Polo, which became one of the best-selling books in Europe.
Although people enjoyed reading the book, many of them thought that Marco’s stories about China were too fantastic to be true. But Marco always stood by his tales.
