Sitting in the Kinko's doorway, my fingers were numb(麻木的) from the cold. My lungs felt frozen from the strong wind. I was invisible(无形的) in their world. I looked at the tidy bundle of my belongings, a cotton blanket neatly rolled up on which I was sitting.
I was wearing a warm coat. I had a thin pair of gloves keeping my fingers from freezing. I sat at this corner of Mission Street in San Francisco, because I felt safe. People always walk along Mission Street toward downtown. This corner of the building had no other homeless people. I could be here in peace.
Yes, I'm homeless, but don't pity me. I have pride. Don't give me money. I have places where I can be fed with a good meal. But don't pass by me without knowing my existence. Look at me.
I'm a 60-year-old woman. I'm Asian. I'm sitting out here because I have no home or family. However, I'm a human being, surviving with dignity(尊严). You don't see a begging bowl in front of me. I ask you to say good morning to me as you pass me by on your way to the Kinko's.
It was already 6 pm. I saw the familiar faces, a Chinese man and his 9-year-old daughter walking by, and he said “Good evening” to me. His daughter said “Hello” to me and gave me a sweet smile. They do so each time they meet me. I am always moved by their greetings. In their eyes I'm a human being, which gives me courage to find a new life.
Life may be hard for me and I've experienced what you can't imagine. Knowing I'm a human, I'll never lose heart. I'll try my best to find a job and enjoy my life to the fullest.

The liver cleans the blood and helps remove toxins(毒素) from the body. But liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, and now researchers are developing a new form of treatment. They say it reduces the chances of harming the patients.
This treatment method involves the use of natural, non-poisonous chemicals from plants. That is why the researchers call it a “green” method for fighting cancer.
Kattesh Katti is a professor of radiology and physics at the University of Missouri's School of Medicine. For more than 10 years, he has studied the use of nanotechnology to fight cancer.
Nanotechnology is the science of making things unimaginably small. For this study, Katti used extremely small objects to target and destroy precancerous tumor(肿瘤) cells in the livers of mice and human cells in the laboratory.
Kattesh Katti used very small particles of gold. The gold was covered in a protective material. He says the particles attract precancerous and cancer cells. Those cells are far more affected by lower levels of heat than healthy cells.
Once the particles connect with the cells, they are heated with a laser(激光). The laser destroys the cancer cells, but the healthy ones around them live. “The patient will be treated with these nano particles. Within a couple of hours, the patient will be treated with lasers, and then the patient can go home. So there is no radioactivity(放射), toxic waste or toxicity to the patient,” Katti said.
What it means is that the patient would not have the same side effects one can have from radiation and chemotherapy(化疗). Chemotherapy drugs are often toxic. While they kill off the cancer tumors, they are also poisonous to the healthy cells and the patient can get very sick.
The next step is testing in human subjects.
5. Why is the new form of treatment called a “green” method?
A. It increases the opportunities of hurting the
patient.
B. Chemicals used in the treatment are natural and harmless.
C. It helps clean the blood and remove toxins in the body.
D. Plants are directly used to treat the cancer without any medicine.
6. What is nanotechnology?
A. A medicine of fighting liver cancer.
B. A small object to destroy tumor cells.
C. A technology of making things extremely small.
D. A small cell used to fight cancer in the laboratory.
7. What's Katti's attitude toward the new method of treatment?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Worried.
8. What's the best title for the text?
A. Can Fighting Cancer Be Green?
B. How to Deal With Liver Cancer?
C. Liver Cancer Isn't a Big Problem
D. Which Is Better, Radiation or Chemotherapy?

To whom it may concern,
I come from China, known for four great inventions of contemporary China. They are high speed railway, mobile payment, bicycle sharing, and online shopping, which have added great convenience to our daily life.
With mobile payment, online shopping has gained much popularity, engaging the public to form different consumption habits. I seldom shop at malls now. What I often purchase online is clothes and stationery. The easy access to consumer reviews helps me make informed purchases. Also, shopping online helps me save time and money. But the goods I receive may not be the same as those shown online, which is really annoying.
Yours sincerely,
