Step 1  Review

Briefly recap what the students learned in the last unit, such as months and seasons.

Step 2  Leading in 

Show a map of the world and give four questions. Get the students to find out the countries and point.

Questions:

Where is China?

Where is Australia?

Where is the U.S.?

Where is Japan?

Step 3  Presentation  

1. Show a picture of a compass to teach the new words direction, west, north, east, southeast and south.

direction /dɪˈrekʃn/ n.方向        north /nɔːθ/ n. 北方

west /west/ n. 西方              east /iːst/ n. 东方

southeast /ˌsaʊθˈiːst/ n. 东南

                         south /saʊθ/ n. 南方

2. Teach the new words country, New Zealand, U.S., point and grandparent. First get the students to read the new words aloud by themselves, and then repeat the words two or three times after the teacher.

country /ˈkʌntrɪ/ n. 国家

New Zealand /ˌnjuː ˈziːlənd/ 新西兰（地名）

U.S. (= United States /juːˈnaɪtɪd steɪts/) 美国（地名）

point /pɔɪnt/ v. 指；指向

grandparent /ˈɡrændpeərənt/ n.（外）祖父；（外）祖母

Step 4  Listening and filling               

Get the students to listen and fill in the blanks. (Let’s Do It! No. 1)

1. This is ________. ________ points up.

2. This is east. East points ________.

3. This is ________. ________ points left.

4. This is south. South points ________.

Answers: 1. north; North　2. right　3. west; West　4. down

Step 5  Practice

1. Get the students to listen to the recording and repeat the following sentences.

2. Get the students to work in pairs. Point and say the directions.

Step 6  Reading and judging

Read Part 2 of the lesson and write true (T) or false (F). (Let’s Do It! No. 2)

1. Li Ming and Wang Mei are looking at a map of the world. (　　)                                                            

2. Wang Mei’s grandparents will go to Australia for the Spring Festival. (　　)                                       

3. The U.S. is north of Canada. (　　)

Step 7  Reading and answering

Get the class to read Part 2 of the lesson and answer the questions.

1. Where will Wang Mei’s grandparents go during the Spring Festival?

Answers: 1. They will go to New Zealand.

Step 8  Reading, finding and translating

Get the class to read the lesson and find the following phrases, and then translate them.

Step 11  Language points

1. North points up on a map. 在地图上，北方指向上。

(1) north 此处用作名词，意为“北方”。表示方向的名词：

这些方位词可以作名词、副词或形容词。

The sun rises in the east and goes down in the west.（作名词）

太阳从东方升起，在西方落下。

The plane is flying north.（作副词）

飞机向北飞行。

He is from East Africa. （作形容词）

他来自东非。

 (2) point不及物动词，意为“指；指向”。

　point up 指向上

　point down指向下

　point right指向右

　point left 指向左

2. East points right. 东方指向右。

  right此处用作副词，意为“向右；朝右”，与left相对。

Turn right at the cinema.   在电影院向右转弯。

[拓展]

(1) right作名词，意为“右”。on one’s right在某人的右边

My sister sits on my right in the picture.  

在这张照片上，我妹妹坐在我的右边。

(2) right形容词，意为“右边的；对的；正确的”。

my right hand我的右手

The answer is right. 这个答案正确。

3. A map of the world一张世界地图

　a map of意为“一张……地图”。

　This is a map of China.

　这是一张中国地图。

　Look at the map of our school.

  看我们学校的地图。

4. It’s north of the U.S. 它在美国的北方。

　此处north of相当于to/on the north of，意为“在（某物范围以外的）北面”。

　to, on和in与方位词连用时的区别：

　(1) to表示“（主语）在某特定范围之外”。

Japan is (to the ) east of China.

日本在中国的东面。

　(2) on表示“两地接壤”。

Hebei is on the north of Henan.

河北省在河南省的北边。

　(3) in表示“（主语）被包含在某一范围之中”。

Qingdao is in the east of China.

青岛在中国的东部。  

Step 12  Summary

Sum up what we’ve learnt in this period with the class.
