Cosmetics(化妆品)are commonly used by women nowadays. But what did Chinese women use in ancient times?
Over the past several years, Wang Yifan, 29, has restored(复原)more than 30 kinds of cosmetics and tools from different dynasties(朝代). Wang has taken interest in the cosmetics since she was a child.
The restoration process of cosmetics includes the following steps: making clear what the ingredients(成分)are, doing experiments(实验), comparing the test results and correcting mistakes if there are any problems. In her eyes, every step is a challenge. But finding the right ingredients is the most difficult part. Sometimes, the same ingredient might have different names during different periods.
Although the process is hard and takes plenty of time, Wang finds it worth the efforts. “Restoring cosmetics offers another way for people to learn Chinese history and know more about our nation,” Wang said.
Wang Yifan is not the only one that takes actions to spread the Chinese culture. Wang Ping connects his job with it, too. Wang Ping became interested in making Chinese headdresses(头冠) in 2020. He uses different kinds of materials. Surprisingly, almost most of them are “waste” as they come from clothes that are not worn anymore. “I’m trying to make the headdresses in an environmentally friendly way.” Wang said.

During the two sessions(两会), people around the world talk about China. Have you ever wondered what topics Generation Z (people born 1995—2009) are most interested in? In March 2022, China Daily did a survey on topics of the two sessions to see what interests Generation Zers most. Let’s take a look.
Among all topics, “mental health” got the most votes(投票). “Spreading traditional culture” (83%) followed closely. The top choice is not unexpected. Reports on mental health problems of teenagers have increased in recent years. The rate of depression(抑郁)among them was nearly 25%. The attention they give to mental health shows that they care for their own well-being. When they don’t feel well, they dare to speak out and ask for help.
Although Generation Zers are young, they understand the power of traditional culture. They believe that China is deeply rooted in traditional culture and would like to spread it to the world. Zhao Yan, a junior 2 student from Liaoning Riwan Middle School, said, “My school set up many clubs to help students understand the importance of traditional culture. I join a paper-cutting workshop and a hanfu club. I have learned a lot. I made a tiger-shaped paper-cutting. It has not only helped me practise my handwork skills but also let me know the beauty of art. It’s our duty to pass this great art to future generations.”
Instead of only focusing on themselves, Generation Zers also set their eyes on social problems. Kevin Xu, a 16-year-old boy from Shenzhen, told the reporter. “I care about the prevention and control measures(防治措施)of COVID-19. I’m now studying in the UK. In February, the UK government ended quarantine(隔离)rules. It means that COVID-19 patients can go out. This would never happen in China! I think China’s ‘dynamic zero-case’ policy(动态清零政策)sounds more responsible. A country should protect its people in a pandemic.”
People seem to know little about Generation Zers. Thanks to this survey, we are able to take a closer look at “what Generation Zers care about” and paint a picture of what they are like.

The Mid-Auturmn Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday that celebrates the full moon, a good harvest and family unity. In ancient times, people were easily separated by distance (距离). Ancient poets often wrote about missing their loved ones when seeing the moon. There are many Chinese poems praising the beauties of the moon and expressing people’s longing (想念) for their friends and families at Mid-Auturmn. Looking at the Moon and Longing for One Far Away, a famous Tang poem, was written by Zhang Jiuling (678-740).
Over the sea the moon grows bright; We gaze on it far, far apart.
Lovers complain of long, long night; I rise and long for my dear heart.
Candles blown out, fuller is light; My coat put on, I’m moist with dew.
As I can’t hand you moonbeams white, I go to bed to dream of you.
    (Translated by Xu Yuanchong)

Traveling to another country is exciting and fun. But if you don’t learn about local traditions, your trip may get into trouble. To help stop things like that, I list some cultural taboos (禁忌) in several countries. Let’s take a look and then you can have a great trip there.
    Mexico
In Mexico, bringing an expensive gift to someone’s home is a no-no. It could be seen as a bribe (贿赂). For local people, some simple things like flowers are good gifts. But you shouldn’t take along red flowers, because in Mexican culture, they symbolize death and can be connected with witchcraft (巫术).
    The US
Americans have a tradition of tipping (给小费). You can tip waiters, taxi drivers, hotel doormen…nearly anyone with a service job.
Pay attention when you talk with Americans. Questions like “How old are you?” may be common between friends. But as tourists in the US, it is not polite to ask people’s age.
    Britain
British people are known for queuing (排队). From the supermarket to the underground, queues are very common in Britain. Usually, it takes a British person six months of their life in queues. If you jump the queue in Britain, you may make them angry.
    Japan
You should never wear shoes indoors in Japan. When visiting someone’s home, it is rude to enter with shoes on. Shoes should be taken off at the door and replaced with indoor slippers (拖鞋). This is also the same when you try clothes on in a clothes shop. You should take off your shoes before going into the fitting room (试衣间). There are indoor shoes prepared for customers inside.
86.What are good gifts for local people in Mexico?

87.Why shouldn’t tourists ask people’s age in the US?

88.How long does it usually take a British person in queues?

89.What should you do before going into the fitting room in Japan?

John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
    Dear David,
How time flies! It’s been 3 months since I came to China. I’m having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I’ve completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I’d like to share some with you.
In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. Tea didn’t appear in England until about 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.
Lastly, I’d like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals—the Mid-Auturmn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Auturmn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.
If you’d like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.

Young people from China and Russia gave speeches and shared ideas on the show Youth Power. They either have experiences of learning each other’s language or living in these two countries. Their stories are personal, but they show the deep cultural exchanges between the two countries. Here is one of them.
Nik Gu, 20, Russia, studying at Tsinghua University
I moved from Russia to China with my family 16 years ago. When I arrived, I couldn’t speak a word of Chinese, and it was very difficult for me to get used to this new way of life. But soon this difficulty was gone.
In 2008, not so long after the Olympic Games in Beijing, I began to go to a Chinese primary school. This is how I started my journey of studying Chinese.
Of course, it was not easy at first. I often found myself speaking Russian to my Chinese classmates when I tried to express myself. However, we understood each other and became good friends.
Now, after studying Chinese for more than 13 years, when I speak, many people think I sound like a native speaker and that I even have a Beijing accent (口音).

The Chinese have an idiom, ruxiang — suisu, which means “When in Rome do as the Romans do”. Many people are surprised to hear how long I have lived in Beijing. In fact, China has become my home. What I like best about China is its traditional culture and long history. I’ve learned Chinese calligraphy (书法), kung fu and even something about traditional Chinese medicine, so I’ve truly experienced Chinese life.

    Dear Nik Gu,
How are you? I’m glad to know you love traveling and you want to travel around China. I live in Sunshine City which is located in the southern part of China. It covers around 1500 square kilometres and there are several train stations and an airport in the city. So you can come here by train or by air. When you come to our city, you should visit Xing Hai Park, the most famous park in our city. In this park, you will be able to see lots of beautiful views. The second place you should visit is the City Museum where you can get to know the history of our city. What’s more, I suggest you take part in the bicycle race which will be held soon. It is so exciting and I’m sure you will love it. I hope you will enjoy yourself in Sunshine City.
    Yours,
    Li Ming

I will introduce a traditional Chinese festival to you.
Firstly, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. It’s a time for families to get together. And people, no matter how busy they are or how far away they work, try to get home. In addition, families eat and have fun together during the day. For example, adults drink tea or chat, and children play games together. In the evening, the whole family enjoy the full moon and eat moon cakes. Old people share the story of Chang’e flying to the moon with children.
