(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级校考期末)Recently children have been told to buy traditional alarm clocks instead of mobile phones to wake them up in the morning. Schools will advise pupils to turn off mobile phones or iPads in the evening to have enough sleep.
Researchers from a charity say that using internet-connected devices(装置) in the evening can prevent children getting more rest. Moreover, they suggest that school children should invest in a real alarm clock to make sure that they get a good night’s sleep and arrive at school on time.
① The result is that 40% pupils in secondary schools can now hardly get on well without these devices. About two-thirds of pupils have a habit of taking mobile phones to bed at night.
② The study also shows that girls are more likely to be attracted by mobile phones than boys and often use the Internet to talk to friends by social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter. One girl aged 12 said “I have been told that I am addicted(上瘾的) to the Internet and prefer being online to being with other people.”
③ A girl of 13 told researchers “I can’t imagine if someone takes my iPad away. I walk around the house with it even though it’s not turned on. I just like being with it.” Another girladded “Sometimes I can’t sleep without using the mobile phone at night.”

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级校考期末)I walked away from shore and was glad to find a clear spring. Then I cut myself a strong stick to protect myself and climbed a tree. There I slept the first night in my new home.
The morning came clearly. I felt surprisingly energetic after a night in a tree. I went to shore, where I found out that the storm had driven the broken ship from the sandbar (沙洲) . The waves had set it on the rocks within a mile off shore.
I also found the boat that we had struck out in. A fast-flowing inlet (入口) lay between me and the boat. I decided to deal with the broken ship first because it held more useful items (物品) .
The tide (潮汐) crept out (缓缓退去) farther and farther until I could walk upon sand to within a quarter mile of the ship. I realized all of us would have survived the storm if we’d only stayed with the ship.
I cried at the thought of how easily I could be sharing this adventure with a group. But this was no time for tears. I dried my face and took off my clothes so I could swim to the ship.
Once I reached it, I swam around looking for a way to get planks (木板) . I noticed a hanging bit of rope and used it to climb the side. I found the ship’s food was free of water. I filled my mouth with biscuits. Now I only needed a boat to get the food to shore.
I collected boards and bits of sail (钉子). I tied the sails together before keeping them overboard. Then I put the boards together into a raft (木筏) . I laid more aboard across my raft so that anything I put on it would be safe from the water.

(2022春·江苏南通·八年级统考期末)For most first-year students at a university or college, August is the month for military training (军训). It offers a good chance to meet our classmates and get ready for the new school life.

Could I manage to both complete this project and prepare for the closing concert? What if my classmates wouldn’t follow my instructions?
The project began on August 24. The three other girls in the group have different abilities. My group gave up our lunch break so that we would have more time to work. One girl in my group asked about my design, saying that we should shorten the text and leave more space for pictures. The arguments (争论) between us made me sad from time to time, but whenever there was an argument, I tried to stay calm. I thought hard about whether or not to take her suggestions and then made some changes. I found that she had a lot of good ideas. As time went by, even when I couldn’t take part in practice. I wasn’t worried about leaving the project to her.
Finally, it was time for our project to be shown. Our teacher said that no matter what the results might be, our efforts (努力) would not be wasted.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级苏州高新区第二中学校考期末)When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand? These days, buying second-hand items is becoming more popular.
Second-hand items are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2020, the mass(质量) of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. So it’s a better choice to reuse old things.
People can even find some “extinct” (绝版的) items, or items that are no longer made. For example, some people like to buy vintage items, including clothes and accessories (饰品). These items often go back 30 years or even more. But as long as they’re in good condition, people can still use them.
Second-hand items connect people. In this way, they sometimes pass on history and stories. Here are two examples.
Zhao Kaiqi, 22, college student, Harbin, Heilongjiang
I love buying books on Deja Vu, an online second-hand trading site. It’s a good choice for students like me. I can save a lot of money. It also brings me interesting experiences that I don’t have when I buy new books. One time, I found a note in a second-hand book. Its previous (之前的) owner left the note, hoping that I would enjoy the book. It was heartwarming to read. I want to do something like that in the future.
Kate, 25, writer, London, UK
I am a big fan of vintage items. They are special. I like items from the 1950s and 1960s. Vintage items carry stories from the past. Once I bought a bracelet (手链) with the words “Rose” and “Love, Jason”inscribed on it. It made me wonder about ___▲___ . I think looking for vintage items is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, but whether you can find an item that fits you. It’s an interesting connection.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级苏州高新区第二中学校考期末)How did the sea horse get its name? It’s not hard to guess. The top half of the fish looks like a small horse.
Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. There are 32 different kinds of sea horses. Their sizes are quite different from one inch long to about one foot long. Because their fins are small, sea horses swim very slowly. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses. They can also change colours to keep themselves. Sea horses feed on live food, such as tiny shrimps. A sea horse has no teeth, so it eats the shrimp whole.
A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, unlike most kinds of fish. And it’s the male sea horse, not the female, which gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female’s body. But the female places the eggs in the male sea horse’s pouch (育儿袋). The male carries the eggs for about three weeks until they hatch (孵化).
The number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and kept in aquariums (水箱) where they can’t live long. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean. There it can find a mate and bring new sea horses into the world.
36.Sea horses do the following things except ________ to keep themselves safe from other fish.
A.changing colours B.changing sizes C.hiding in plants D.hiding in grasses
37.Why is the number of sea horses becoming smaller?
A.Because they grow at a very low speed. B.Because their homes are changed into new land.
C.Because they are killed by people for food. D.Because their food is becoming less and less.
38.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Father Sea Horses B.How Sea Horses Grow
C.Kinds of Sea Horses D.All About Sea Horses

(2022春·江苏常州·八年级统考期末)Finally, in March of 1703, the Adventure set sail for India. The winds were good until we got near Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa. Then a strong wind began to blow. We were trapped in the wind for twenty days. After many hours, the wind finally stopped and the sea became quieter. The storm had blown the Adventure hundreds of kilometers to the east.
“Where are we?” I asked the captain(船长).
“I can’t tell for sure.” He said, “we are running out of water. We must reach land soon to fill our water barrels(桶).” Many days passed and we saw nothing but the sea. One morning, before everyone died of thirst, a sailor cried out, “Land!” Everyone on the ship was silent for a second. And quickly the ship sailed closer to the land. The sailors suddenly became turnultuous and all cheered.
“You men,” said the captain to the sailors, “take the rowboats(划艇) and go. Fill the water barrels with fresh water.”
“Captain,” I said, “may I go with them to take a look at this place?”
“Of course,” he replied. “You can tell me later what it is like.”
When the rowboats reached the coast, one of the sailors said, “we will have to walk along the coast to look for fresh water.”
“I’m going to take a little walk,” I told them. “I will meet you back here in an hour.”
I walked about a kilometer, enjoying being on land again. Then I turned and walked back to meet the sailors.
When I arrived on the beach, the sailors were not there. They were in the rowboats, rowing as fast as they could toward the Adventure. I was going to shout out to them when I saw a very huge man walking through the sea. I was trying to catch up with the rowboats. (2022春·江苏扬州·八年级统考期末)My father and I were both angry. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted my father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out to the street.
I walked aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I seemed to see my childhood from another space: happy.
But now... I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because my dad is getting old. We have different ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I walked in the streets. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the building where I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: “Is my father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, my dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except my father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking me underneath the covers (掖被子) while I am sleeping.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe ... With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that there wasn’t the iron door that I had imagined between us at all. Love — it’s second to none.

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级统考期末)BOOK INTRODUCTION——Number the Stars (《细数繁星》)
It’s hard to believe that I wrote Number the Stars more than twenty years ago. It seems like yesterday that I answered the phone on a snowy January morning and received the news that it had won the 1990 Newbery Medal.
I think readers of every age may match themselves with the important persons in the books they love and ask themselves: Would I have done that? What choice(选择) would I have made?
And ten—the age of Annemarie in Number the Stars—is an age when young people are beginning to develop a strong set of personal ethics(道德观;价值观)….They are beginning to realize that the world they live in is not always good and safe.
So they follow a story about a ten-year-old girl who is caught in a dangerous situation, and she must make decisions. Young readers become cheerful when Annemarie takes a deep breath, enters the woods, faces the danger, stands up to the enemy and gets her success.
Today, the book has come out in many countries and translated into many languages. It found its way into the hands and hearts of children who had read about but never experienced war…. Books do change lives, I know; and many readers have told me that Number the Stars changed theirs when they were young, that it made them think about both. cruelty(残酷;残忍) and courage. “It was something that shaped my idea of how people should be treated,” wrote a young woman recently, telling me about her own fourth-grade experience with the book.
The Danish friend who first told me the story of her childhood, and who became the Annemarie in my book, is an old woman now. So am I. We both love thinking of the children reading the story today, coming to it for the first time and realizing that once, for a short time and in a small place, a group of prejudice-free(不存偏见的)people created a touching story of love. and kindness towards others.

Do you know black boxes?
Black boxes are flight recorders placed in an aircraft for the purpose of making it easier to know how the accidents happened in flight.
An airplane actually has two black boxes. The flight data recorder catches the information, which can discover whether human error or instrument problems contributed to an accident. The cockpit (驾驶舱) voice recorder records pilot voices and cockpit sounds.
The black boxes are not black. They are painted bright orange to help with their recovery after accidents. The outside is with stripes of reflective tape (反光带). The black boxes are usually placed in the tail of a plane where they are more likely to survive a crash. A flight data recorder is required to store at least 25 hours of flight information. A cockpit voice recorder is required to record at least 2 hours of audio information.
For the black boxes to survive a crash, they are built to be waterproof, fireproof, shockproof, heat and pressure and corrosion resistant (耐腐蚀). The black box must be able to hold 3, 400 times the force of gravity, when the airplane goes down at the speed of about 500 km/h. It must also survive flames up to 1, 100 degrees Celsius for one hour, and the boxes should be able to give out a signal once per second while put under 6, 000 meters of saltwater for at least 30 days.
How is data from black boxes picked up? It needs special skills to physically bring the black boxes back. Investigators may need to clean and dry the black boxes and download data from them. It takes time to download and get the information from data. If the storing units go wrong, it will take longer time, either days or months.
So, the black boxes are very important to explain to everyone what happened during the flight.

What if we could use plastic waste to build roads? This is exactly what a company has done. McCartney’s company built the world’s first plastic road in Elgin town, Scotland. The plastic waste was made into grains(颗粒)and then mixed with biturnen(沥青). The road looks just like any other road. But it has improved strength and isn’t easy to break.
“Our way can not only help solve the problem of plastic waste but also produce roads that deal better with changes in the weather, reducing potholes(路面的坑洼), ” McCartney said.
The idea came from a trip to India. “I saw people there would put plastic waste into potholes and burn it to repair roads,” said McCartney.
After lots of testing, McCartney found the perfect method. And now his company has built many plastic roads around the world. A one-kilometer stretch of road uses about 684, 000 plastic bottles or 1.8 million plastic bags. The road itself can be recycled in the end. The materials can be reused to build new roads.

I was always busy and I was always learning how to do new things.
My clothes were old and full of holes, so I made some new ones from animal skins. My new suit looked very strange, but it kept me dry.
In my sixth year I made a small canoe(独木舟)because I wanted to sail around the island. The trip took longer and was more difficult than I thought. When I got to the other side of the island, I was very tired. I decided to stop and rest before going home. While I was lying on the beach, almost asleep, I suddenly heard a voice behind me. “Robison Crusoe! Poor Robinson! Where are you?”
At first I thought I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and looked round. ▲ My parrot Poll was sitting on the branch of a tree!

After her college closed for the first lockdown in March 2020, Finty Royle was looking for something to do in her community to help people. When a local company said that it wanted someone to deliver free meals for families in need, it was perfect for Royle. She cycled 25 miles around her area every day to hand out the meals. Speaking to The Week Junior, she said, “The children got very excited to see me every day. There was even one family who had drawn a picture in chalk of someone cycling through a rainbow in front of their house.”
Royle, aged 19, has now become a youth member of a charity called Magic Breakfast, which aims to provide pupils across the UK with healthy breakfasts to help them learn as well as they can at school. She says the best thing you can have for breakfast is porridge because it’s good for you and it keeps you going for the whole morning.
Magic Breakfast’s youth members, including Royle, have written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask him to increase the government’s funding for free school breakfasts by £75 million. (2022春·江苏南京·八年级统考期末)What did your street look like a hundred years ago? It has probably changed over time. U.S. Route 66 was a road that saw many changes, too. This famous road has been written about in books. It has been the subject of TV shows and songs. Route 66 stretched 2,448 miles (3,940 km)across the United States, and it carried a lot of history.
For hundreds of years, native Americans followed animal tracks to hunt. Later, mountain men blazed trails along the same paths in order to set their fur traps. Next came the pioneers moving west in wagons. Gold was discovered in California in 1849. People used the same route to seek their fortunes(财富)there. About 10 years later, railroads were built along the flat and wide route.
In 1908, Henry Ford began to manufacture automobiles. Motorists took off into the countryside. They wanted to drive on paved roads! In 1926, Route 66 became an official U.S. highway. It was the first paved road to run all the way from Illinois to California. During the 1930s and '40s, people drove west on U.S. Route 66. They were looking for work on farms and in wartime plants. In the 1950s and '60s, many Americans enjoyed taking road trips. They drove along Route 66 to visit the Grand Canyon and Disneyland.
Wider, straighter, and safer highways were built. Old Route 66 was used less and less. In 1985, it was officially removed from the U. S. highway system. (2022春·江苏南京·八年级统考期末)A new study has found that people who lived in ancient(long ago) Britain quickly evolved to deal with a lack of sunlight. Evolution is when living things change over time to survive. Jonathan Terhorst from the University of Michigan and Lain Mathieson from the University of Pennsylvania, both in the US, looked at data from the genes of 529 people who lived in Britain over the past 4,500 years. DNA in genes is a chemical that carries all the information about your body.
The team found that the levels of vitamin D and calcium in humans’ bodies in Britain suddenly increased. Vitamin D is a substance that humans make naturally when their skin is exposed to sunlight, and it helps bones to grow straight and strong.
Humans evolved in Africa, where there is plenty of sunshine. However, when they moved to places like Britain, where there is not much sunlight, they were faced with a problem—many of them couldn’t make much vitamin D.The earliest arrivals in Britain got vitamin D by eating oily fish but people gradually moved to growing crops instead of fishing. This made them short of the essential vitamin. The researchers found that around this time, humans in Britain quickly evolved to have pale skin, which absorbs more light for making vitamin D.This change was an example of natural selection, which is when hard conditions make particular genes needed for survival. Those who have the genes are more likely to survive and pass their genes on to the next generation.
You can also make up for a lack of vitamin D by eating more calcium, which helps bones grow. Milk is a source of calcium but to digest(消化) it you need to make a substance in your gut called lactase. Many people across the world can’t make lactase when they grow up. However, the study found that early people in Britain evolved to keep on producing lactase even as adults. This meant they could carry on drinking milk—so they kept cows. This extra calcium, along with their pale skin’s use of what sunshine there was, helped them survive.
90.In ancient Britain, people evolved in order to ________.
A.have pale skin B.take more vitamin D
C.get used to the weather D.make more lactase to digest milk
91.People should ________, if they cannot get enough vitamin D.
A.drink little milk B.change their genes
C.move to places like Britain D.take part in more outdoor activities
92.British people have stronger abilities to ________ than many people all over the world.
A.digest milk B.keep cows C.catch oily fish D.change their genes
93.Which of the following is the correct order according to the passage?
① Humans evolved in Africa.
② British people evolved to digest milk better.
③ People started growing more crops instead of fishing.
④ British people ate oily fish for more vitamin D.
A.①④③② B.④②①③ C.①③④② D.③①②④
