(2021春·江苏盐城·八年级统考期末)When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand? These days, buying second-hand items is becoming more popular.
Second-hand items are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2020, the mass(质量) of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. So it’s a better choice to reuse old things.
People can even find some “extinct” (绝版的) items, or items that are no longer made. For example, some people like to buy vintage items, including clothes and accessories (饰品). These items often go back 30 years or even more. But as long as they’re in good condition, people can still use them.
Second-hand items connect people. In this way, they sometimes pass on history and stories. Here are two examples.

I love buying books on Deja Vu, an online second-hand trading site. It’s a good choice for students like me. I can save a lot of money. Its previous (之前的) owner left the note, hoping that I would enjoy the book. It was heartwarming to read. I want to do something like that in the future.

Erik rang his grandparents’ doorbell and silently wished the next four hours would go by quickly. He didn’t want to give up his whole Saturday afternoon at his grandparents’ house where there were no kids in the neighborhood.
“You’re right on time,” Grandma Bethany said, opening the door. “There’s tea and cake in the dining room.” Cake? At least the first ten minutes would go by quickly. Erik hung his coat on the rack (架子) by the door and saw a strange looking key hanging on a hook.
“Grandpa Bill, what’s this funny key for?”
“That’s a skeleton key. It opens the best room in this house,” Grandpa Bill whispered so no one else could hear. “It’s the room I go to when your grandmother tries to make me help with the dishes.”
“What’s so special about the room?” Erik asked.
“It’s a game room,” Grandpa Bill said. “Take the key and see if you can find the room by the time I finish my tea.”

(2021春·江苏南京·八年级南师附中新城初中校考期末)The island of Blefuscu is only about a kilometre to the north of Lilliput. I knew that just beyond the narrow sea separating the two countries there were at least fifty warships ready to attack us, with many other smaller ships. But I kept away from that side of the coast, so that the people of Blefuscu would not see me. I had a secret plan.
From the King’s workmen I ordered fifty heavy metal hooks, each fastened(固定) to a piece of strong rope. I took off my coat and shoes, and walked into the sea with the hooks and ropes in my hands. The water was deep in the middle, so I had to swim for a few metres. But it only took me half an hour to get to Blefuscu.
When the Blefuscans saw me, they were so frightened that they jumped out of their ships and swam to the beach. I then used one hook for each ship, and tied all the ropes together at one end. While I was doing this, the enemy shot thousands of arrows( 箭 ) at me, which caused me a lot of pain. I was afraid of getting an arrow in my eyes, but I suddenly remembered I still had an old pair of reading glasses in my pocket, so I put them on and continued my work. When I was ready, I started walking into the shallow water away from Blefuscu. As I walked through the waves, I pulled the enemy’s warships behind me. When the people of Blefuscu realized that all their warships were disappearing, their cries were terrible to hear.
As I came nearer to Lilliput, I saw the King and all his lords and ladies standing on the beach. They could only see Blefuscu’s warships coming closer, as I was swimming and my head was occasionally under the water. Therefore, they supposed that I had drowned, and that the Blefuscan ships were attacking. But when they saw me walking out of the sea, they welcomed me warmly with cries of delight. The King himself came down to the water to meet me. I became a “nardac”.

(2021春·江苏南京·八年级南师附中新城初中校考期末)A few weeks ago, we attended a lesson given by our classmate Wu Ruijie who talked about some of her experiences in America. It was very interesting and lively, we all listened carefully and were moved by the lesson.
During the lesson, she shared some stories about her daily life in the United States with us and some culture shocks (文化冲突) that she experienced. I still remember the story she told which took place in the New York subway. One day, she was talking to her Chinese friend on her mobile phone while a black woman was standing beside her. She often used a Chinese word whose pronunciation was similar to the rude N-word, so the black woman started to very angrily glare at (怒视) her. This was only one of her stories.
Ms. Tang also shared a story she had experienced when she was in Australia. On a hot sunny day, while she was walking on the street holding an umbrella to protect her from the strong sunlight, suddenly a man behind her said to her, “Is it raining?” The reason is that in Australia people don’t use umbrellas on sunny days, so the man thought it was strange and asked Ms. Tang.
Through the embarrassing stories, we can see many differences from country to country to decide how we should face these situations when we go abroad. Here are some suggestions: First, we should respect everyone wherever we are. Second, learn some local culture before you get there. Third, if you make some mistakes, you should explain the reasons. Finally, keep a kind heart at all times.
All in all, culture shock is not a big deal as long as we treat others kindly. Please pay attention to learning Western culture.

In front of the house there was a beach. Peter liked to lie on the stand(看台) when the sun was warming it. From the back door of the house he would walk along a path as far as the sand, and stand by the water looking at the sea. When nothing very interesting was happening on the water, he would go down on his knees and take a handful of sand. Through his fingers ran the sand until only small stones and shells were left. Some people think that if they don’t have a yard, they can’t keep a garden. Luckily, that’s not true. For people who live in apartment buildings, there’s another choice(选择): rooftop gardens—gardens on the roofs(屋顶).
Rooftop gardens are very popular in cities. Most building roofs go to waste. Putting a garden on your roof is a nice way to turn an empty space into something pretty and relaxing.
Rooftop gardens are not a new idea. About 2,600 years ago, people in Ancient (古老的) Mesopotamia built rooftop gardens. There were such gardens in Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt. These gardens were very important. Many ancient cities had walls. If an army attacked (袭击) the city, the people hid behind the walls. The army usually tried to burn the city’s food, so the people in the city kept their gardens on top of their walls. That way, they could continue to grow food.
Today’s rooftop gardens don’t keep us alive, but they still have nice benefits(好 处). Plants take in heat to make the whole building cooler. As a result, people in the building use their air conditioners less. It means more electricity(电) will be saved. One study found that if every roof in Tokyo had a garden, the city would save more than a million dollars a day on electricity.
Rooftop gardening is hard. Here are a few tips. First of all, be safe. Build a fence around your garden. You don’t want the wind to blow plants off your roof! Also, remember that rooftop gardens get more sun. If you have a plant that shouldn’t get too much sun, remember to put it in the shade sometimes.
There are many other things to keep in mind before you start a rooftop garden. Do some research and then give it a try. You’ll make your little part of the city much nicer.
47.Why did people in the past have rooftop gardens?
A.To grow their crops. B.To make the cities prettier.
C.To make their houses cooler. D.To protect themselves from attack.
48.Most building roofs go to waste. What does this sentence mean?
A.People turn the roofs into a waste bin.
B.People don’t use that space for anything.
C.People often throw the waste onto the roofs.
D.People don’t waste time on rooftop gardening.
49.What can rooftop gardens do for a building today?
A.To make the whole building cooler.
B.To stop people from throwing rubbish.
C.To produce electricity for the building.
D.To protect the building against the wind.
50.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Rooftop gardening is more energy-saving.
B.Rooftop gardens make the city much nicer.
C.Plants in rooftop gardens can get more sun.

On Feb 25 in the Great Hall of the people in Beijing, President Xi Jinping announced China’s “complete victory” in eliminating extreme poverty(消除贫困). China had set a goal of ending poverty by the end of 2020. As the goal was reached, a grand gathering was held in Beijing to mark the nation’s poverty alleviation accomplishments(扶贫成就) and honor model poverty fighters.
China set its poverty line at an annual income of 2,300 yuan in 2010 for each person. By 2020, a person making less than 4,000 yuan a year could be described as living in poverty, according to Xinhua. Over the past eight years, the last 98.99 million people have shaken off poverty, which was one of the goals of the 13th Five-Year Plan(2016-2020). All 832 poor counties(县) and 128,000 villages have also been removed from the poverty list.
The United Nations has set the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (《2030 年可持续发展议程》). China has met its poverty alleviation goal 10 years ahead of schedule. And according to the World Bank, China has helped end 70 percent of poverty worldwide since the late 1970s.
Ordinary people made this achievement possible. Zhang Guimei, 64, created the first free senior high school for girls in China. This increased the per capita income(人均收入) to more than 40 times what it was in the 1990s.
These model poverty fighters have worked in many different ways and contributed(做贡献) to China’s success in ending poverty. According to Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University, US, China’s success “should inspire the world.”

(2021春·江苏南京·八年级校考期末)For centuries, Italy’s culture has been celebrated around the world. One of its greatest gifts to the world might be the works of Dante Alighieri. This year marks the 700th anniversary of his death. Last year, Italy made March 25 National Dante Day, or Dantedi, to remember the poet.
Dante’s writing often touches on difficult topics, such as politics and philosophy. His greatest work is the famous poem The Divine Comedy. The poem is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. With more than 14,000 lines, the poem describes Dante’s journey through these places.

She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a semester. “A few of my friends have had the same experience lately,” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that will take effect on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point.
Teachers should also avoid using projectors or other multimedia equipment that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible.

(2021春·江苏南京·八年级校考期末)On March 20, the Sanxingdui Ruins in Guanghan, Sichuan drew the world’s attention. Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) announced that they have found more than 500 cultural relics in six pits at the site, which dates back over 3,200 years. The relics include bronzeware, gold and bronze masks, ivory, jade and textiles.
The Sanxingdui Ruins, which were first discovered in 1929, are believed to be the remains of the ancient Shu Kingdom. The kingdom was a center of civilization (文明) along the upper reaches of Yangtze River.
In 1986 archaeologists discovered two pits that they believed were used for sacrificial ceremonies (祭祀仪式). At that time, over 1,000 artifacts were found, including bronzeware, face masks and “divine trees”—bronze sculptures of trees.
The discovery of Sanxingdui raised an important question about the origins of Chinese civilization. The ancient Shu civilization that built Sanxingdui is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Chinese civilization. The site, along with the Liangzhu and Shijiahe sites along the Yangtze River, shows that the birthplace of Chinese civilization might not have been only along the Yellow River Basin in north China.
The newly-discovered relics are similar to those found in 1986, as they also include divine trees and bronze masks. They further support the idea that the pits were used for sacrificial purposes.
New kinds of cultural relics have also been dug up. For example, experts found two square zun, a kind of ancient bronze jar that was used for holding water or wine. They also found cong-a jade artifact commonly found at the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins in Zhejiang province.
“These artifacts show that the Sanxingdui site had a close connection with Central China, but it also marks an original ancient civilization (in Sichuan) with strong creativity,” said Chen Xiandan, a member of the excavation (发掘) project.
82.What do we know about the relics that were recently found at the Sanxingdui Ruins?
A.They are made of gold.
B.They were all found in the same pit.
C.They were created about 3,200 years ago.

84.The discovery of Sanxingdui shows that Chinese civilization ________.
A.started earlier than was believed before
B.might have several different origins
C.was centered along the Yangtze River
D.developed from the ancient Shu civilization
85.What do the newly-discovered relics suggest?
A.Sanxingdui is more important than the sites in Central China.
B.The Sanxingdui Ruins are part of the Liangzhu Ruins.
C.Sanxingdui was built by the ancient Shu Kingdom.
D.The ancient Shu civilization was creative.
