    Mr Behrman dies f pneumnia because he painted an ivy leaf fr Jhnsy in the rain.
    The main characters are Sue, Jhnsy,Mr Pneumnia(persnified), the dctr,and Mr Behrman.
    The stry tk place in Nvember in Greenwich Village.
    Greenwich Village is a place where the art peple came tgether,hunting fr apartments with nrth-facing windws and lw rents. At the tp f a three-stry building,Sue and Jhnsy had their studi. In Nvember,a cld,unseen stranger,whm the dctrs called Pneumnia,arrived in Greenwich Village. Mr Pneumnia placed his icy finger n Jhnsy;and she lay,barely mving,in her bed staring at a blank wall under her blanket.The dctr tk Sue aside and claimed,“She has ne chance in—let us say,ten. And that chance is fr her t want t live. Try t encurage her t think mre hpeful thughts,abut the future,abut living.”    Sue tk sme paper and a pen int Jhnsy’s rm and began a pen drawing,in an attempt t raise Jhnsy’s spirits. Jhnsy’s eyes were pen,but they weren’t watching her.Instead,she stared ut the windw and cunted backwards(13) :“Ten,nine,eight,seven...”“What are yu cunting,dear?”asked Sue. “They’re falling faster nw,”replied Jhnsy. “Three days ag there were almst a hundred. But nw it’s easy. There are nly five left nw. Five leaves n the ivy vine. When the last ne falls,I must g,t. Didn’t the dctr tell yu?”
    “Oh,I never heard f such nnsense,”quickly replied Sue. But Jhnsy’s mind was made up. “I want t see the last ne fall. I’m tired f waiting. I want t g sailing dwn,dwn,just like ne f thse pr,tired leaves. ”“Try t sleep,”said Sue. Then she went t fetch her neighbr,Mr Behrman,t be a mdel fr her drawing. He was a failed painter. In 40 years he had never prduced the masterpiece he lnged t paint. Sue tld him abut Jhnsy’s lnging t slip away like the leaves. Behrman cried with disbelief. “Are there peple in the wrld that flish t think they’ll die because leaves drp ff (24)frm a vine? This is nt a place in which Miss Jhnsy shall lie sick. Smeday I will paint a masterpiece and we shall all g away.”Behrman and Sue lked ut the windw at the vine and nticed that there was just ne remaining leaf. What’s mre,a cld rain was falling,mixed with snw.The next mrning,Jhnsy wke and asked fr the curtains t be pened. One leaf remained n the vine,bravely hlding n in the wind and rain. “It will fall tday.And I will die with it.”The fllwing day,Jhnsy asked again fr the curtains t be pened. The leaf was still there!
    Jhnsy lay fr a lng time lking at it. “I’ve been a bad girl, Sue,”said Jhnsy. “It is a crime t want t die.” Then she asked fr sme fd.In the afternn,the dctr visited,“Even chances,”said the dctr,“with gd nursing,yu’ll win. And nw I must see a fellw dwnstairs,Behrman. Pneumnia,t. There is n hpe fr him.”The next day,Sue came t Jhnsy’s bed. “I have smething t tell yu,”she said.“Mr Behrman died tday. He was ill fr nly tw days. The janitr fund him lying in bed helplessly with pain yesterday mrning. His shes and clthing were wet thrugh and icy cld. They culdn’t imagine where he had been n such a terrible night. And then they fund a lantern,still lit,and sme brushes,and —lk ut the windw,dear,at the last ivy leaf n the wall. Didn’t yu wnder why it never mved an inch when the wind blew? Ah,dear,it’s Behrman’s masterpiece — he painted it there the night when the last leaf fell.”
