    Success Cmes with a High EQ Mst students d an IQ(Intelligence Qutient test early in their schl life. Even if they never see their results,they feel that their IQ is what determines hw well they are ging t d in life. When they see ther students ding better than them,they usually believe that thse students have a higher IQ and that there is nthing they can d t change their situatin. Hwever,new research int EQ(Emtinal Qutient)suggests that success is nt simply the result f a high IQ.         While yur IQ tells yu hw intelligent yu are,yur EQ tells yu hw well yu use yur intelligence. Prfessr Salvey,wh invented the term EQ,gives the fllwing descriptin:at wrk,it is IQ that gets yu emplyed,but it is EQ that gets yu prmted. Supprted by his research,Prfessr Salvey suggests that when predicting smene’s future success,their character,as measured by EQ tests,might actually matter mre than their IQ.
    Prfessr Salvey may be crrect. Fr example,have yu ever wndered why sme f the smartest students in yur class,wh yu think deserve gd grades,smetimes end up failing exams? Perhaps their failure is because f their lwer EQ. Peple are ften mistaken in thinking that thse with high IQs always have high EQs as well. This assciatin can exist,but it is just as pssible fr smene with a lw IQ t have a high EQ r smene with a high IQ t have a lw EQ.It is generally believed that peple with high EQs are pen t new ideas and have psitive attitudes twards life. They are als less likely t be trubled by internal prblems. On the ther hand,there is little dubt that peple with lw EQs ften have prblems getting n with ther peple and dealing with difficult situatins ;hence they have a harder time adjusting in life and in their careers.Peple generally believe that a persn’s IQ is determined by birth. Hwever,mst scial scientists agree that EQ has a lt t d with educatin. Sme are trying t study the pssibility f imprving a persn’s EQ,especially in terms f “peple skills”,such as understanding and cmmunicatin.        
    Prfessr Mayer,recgnised by many as a leading expert in the study f changes t peple’s EQs,recently annunced the results f a study n senir secndary schl students. When students were intrduced t thse wh had disabilities,they fund that,afterwards,the nn-disabled students were mre willing t help peple with difficulties. Cmpared t students wh had nt been invlved in the study,they als shwed a better understanding f the disabled students’ feelings. There was als an bvius change in the disabled students’ attitudes. They became mre psitive abut life and mre willing t try new things.Altgether,the results f studies shw that EQ is as imprtant,if nt mreimprtant than IQ. T get ahead in the wrld and lead a happy successful life requires getting n well with ther peple and being able t understand and react t situatins in the best way pssible. A high EQ is necessary fr this—the higher the better. And the fact that it might be pssible t raise EQs means that schls need t make sure that their students are receiving an educatin they really need,nt slely based n IQ but n develping the entire character.

    6 使用过去分词的注意事项(1)过去分词(短语)作状语,前面可以带有相应的连词,如 when, until,thugh/althugh,as if/thugh,if,unless,表时间、让步、方式、条件等。When asked,he pretended t knw nthing abut this matter. 当被问及时,他假装对此事一无所知。[词汇复现] He culd fcus mre n his studies if left alne. 如果不打扰他,他可以更专注于学习。( 2)句子主语与过去分词(短语)之间存在被动关系,与现在分词(短 语)之间存在主动关系。Guided by the girl,we finally fund the clwn in the circus. 在那个女孩的引导下,我们终于在马戏团找到了小丑。[词汇复现] Fllwing in his father’s ftsteps,he chse t study astrnmy at university. 他追随父亲的脚步,在大学里选择学习天文学。[词汇复现]
    (3)过去分词(短语)作状语时,其主语与句子的主语要一致。如果 主语不一致,要在分词前加上逻辑主语,构成独立主格结构。All the dishes the guests rdered finished,the chef sighed with relief. 客人们点的菜都吃完了,厨师松了一口气。[词汇复现] (4)有些过去分词已形容词化,作状语时表示主语的某种情绪或 状态。常见的这类形容词化的过去分词有satisfied,surprised, interested,mved,wrried,pleased,disappinted,lst 等。Lst in deep thught,the man didn’t hear the music frm the church. 这位男士陷入沉思,没有听到来自教堂的音乐。[词汇复现] 【学法点拨】 分词作状语记忆口诀: 分词作状语,主语是问题。逗号前后两动作,共用一主语。主语找出后,再来断关系。主动用 v. -ing,被动用 v. -ed。having dne 表先后,千万要记住。
