    Lesson 16: Happy Thanksgiving!

    设计说明

    首先,通过与同学们谈论中国的两大节日——春节和中秋节引入关于感恩节的话题。接着,利用图片和例句学习本课节的词汇,并跟读练习。再由歌曲Celebrate!进入课文的学习,通过听音判断正误初步了解课文内容;通过阅读填空、阅读讨论及阅读表达等环节进一步掌握课文,巩固所学内容。之后,让学生们用所学句式自由表达感谢。最后,讲解本课中的重要知识点。本课节先通过词汇的教学为后面的学习扫清障碍,再由浅及深地展开对课文的学习,并通过当堂达标的习题检测学生的掌握情况。

    教学目标

    通过本课节的教学,让学生达成以下目标:

    1.知识目标

    掌握单词:meal, conversation

    接触单词:hug, turkey, gathering, dessert

    短语和句型:give … a big hug, give thanks to … for…

    2.能力目标

    能用英语表达感谢。

    学会感恩。

    教学过程

    Step 1  Warming up

    Have a free talk with students. Show some pictures and ask students questions:

    Q1: What festival is it?

                     

       Answer: Its Spring Festival.

    Q2: What about this?

                           

       Answer: Its Mid-Autumn Festival.

     Q3: Do you always celebrate these holidays with your whole family?

       Answer: Yes, we do.

     Q4: Why do families like to celebrate holidays together?

       Answer: Because

    Q5: When do we celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival?

       Answer: In autumn.

    Q6: In western countries, there’s also a holiday that people celebrate with the whole family in autumn. Do you know what is it?

       Answer: Thanksgiving.

     

    Step 2  Presentation  

    1. Teach the new words meal, dessert, gathering, turkey, conversation, hug and phrase give sb. a hug by using the pictures and making sentences.

      Mum is cooking a meal in the kitchen.

    2. Read the new words at least three times and try to remember them.

    Step 3  Listening

    1. Play the recording of the song Celebrate! for the class to listen and fill in the blanks.

    2. Play the recording of the lesson for the class to listen and ask them to answer the following two questions.

      1. Where did Jenny’s family celebrate this Thanksgiving Day?

    2. Did everyone enjoy this special holiday?

      Answers: 1. At Jenny’s grandparents’ house.  2. Yes, they did.

    Step 4  Reading

    1. Get the class to read the lesson carefully and write true (T) or false (F).

      (1) When they arrived, her grandmother opened the door.(     )

    (2) Their grandmother was cooking the turkey for the tonight’s Thanksgiving dinner. (    )

    (3) Brian felt nervous when he first came here.(    ) 

    (4) Everyone stood together for a big family video.(    )

    2. Get some students to say the basis of their judgement in the lesson.

    3. Get the class to read the lesson again and fill in the blanks. The first letter is given. (Lets Do It! No. 1)

    Jenny’s family gathers at Grandma and Grandpa’s house on Thanksgiving Day. Brian is with the family , too. He felt n_________ when he first came here, but Jenny’s family helped him a lot. Now he feels at home. He thanks Grandma and Grandpa for the l_______ meal. He thanks Jenny for all of her help. He also thanks everyone for w_______ him.

    4.Let the class have a discussion: What did Jenny’s family do on Thanksgiving Day?

    5.Get the class to read the second part of the lesson and answer : Who did Brian thank and why?

     They can use the following structures of the sentences:

    He was thankful to …for ______________.

      Answers: He gave thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for this lovely meal.

      He thanked Jenny for all of her help.

      He was thankful to all of them for welcoming him.

    Step 5  Show

    1. Thanksgiving Day is a time for people to express their gratitude for their friends and family. Get the class to read the messages of Lets Do It! No. 3.

      

    1. Suppose you are celebrating Thanksgiving. What would you say to your parents or friends?

    You can use these sentences:

    I give thanks to … for…

    I thank…for…

    I am thankful to… for…

    I wish to say thank you to … for…

    …, thank you for…

    …, thanks so much for…

     

    Step 6  Language points

    1. Let me give you a big hug.  让我热烈拥抱你。

    hug  n. &  v.  拥抱

    hug sb.  拥抱某人

    give sb. a big hug   给某人一个热情的拥抱

    Mary hugged the little girl.=Mary gave the little girl a hug.

    玛丽拥抱了小女孩。

    2. Are my cousins coming tonight? 我的表兄弟们今晚要来吗?

      be coming是现在进行时表示将来。在英语中,某些动词(特别是表示位置移动的动词)如: come, go, arrive, leave 等的现在进行时可以表示将来,与表示将来的时间状语连用。

    I’m leaving for Dalian tomorrow. 明天我要动身去大连。

    The train is arriving in Shanghai in five minutes.  

    火车过五分钟就要到上海了。

    3. I’d like to give thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for this lovely meal.

    我想感谢爷爷奶奶准备了这顿丰盛的晚餐。

     give thanks to ... for ...意为“为……而感谢……

    I gave thanks to my classmate for his help.

    我感谢同学的帮助。
    Lily gave her thanks to Tom for inviting her to his party.

    莉莉感谢汤姆邀请她参加了晚会。

    【拓展】thanks to意为“多亏,由于”,后接名词或代词作宾语。

      Thanks to your help, I passed this exam.
