Five-year-old Willard Wigan struggled to tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9. Unfortunately, his schoolteacher knew nothing about dyslexia (阅读障碍症), a learning disability that can make letters and numbers confusing. She didn’t try to help him. Not surprisingly, Willard didn’t like school. Usually, his mind drifted—to playing outside, to his dog Maxie, or to the ants that lived near his family’s garden shed. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them—small and insignificant. Thus, when he noticed some ants trying to build a house, he decided to help them! Willard constructed a little building. Then he sprinkled sugar inside to encourage the ants to move in. When they did, Willard built more houses.

At school, Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special. Maybe he wasn’t a failure after all. If he had trouble with his reading or math, Willard would later go home and creat tiny furniture for the ant houses. He even built an ant school, with teeny swings, ladders, seesaws, and a merry-go-round. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow in his heart.

At age nine, Willard began carving faces on toothpicks. He discovered that his ability improved when he held his breath as he worked. When he quit school at age 15 to help support his family, Willard still spent his spare time carving. His confidence grew as more people appreciated his talent. Eventually, he quit his factory job to pursue his dream of becoming one of the best artists in the world. Now, years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a period at the end of a sentence.

Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says, “Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about persevering and achieving your dreams.”

Willard Wigan, microsculptor, has done just that. The man who felt small as a boy has shown the world that something small can really be BIG.

4Which of the following best describes Willard’s teacher?

    ASympathetic. BUnhelpful. CImpatient. DCareless.

5Why did Willard become interested in building homes for ants?

ABecause he had a love for little things.

BBecause he was absent-minded in class.

CBecause he wouldn’t have to struggle at school.

DBecause he thought they both seemed unimportant.

6What can we infer from the text?

AWillard gave up his study in school to pursue his dream.

BWillard became popular when more people appreciated his work.

CWillard was able to carve small artwork in a short period of time.

DWillard found a way to make better artwork when he was at school.

7Which of the following may Willard agree with?

AFailure is the mother of success.

BSuccess belongs to those who don’t give up.

CDreaming big is the first step in achieving your goals.

DTalent is sometimes more important for success than hard work.

I used to have a “dream job”. At least, that’s how many people saw it. It was a highly desirable government position that included a guaranteed retirement and a lifetime medical plan. It was also nearly impossible to get fired.

But I was miserable every day. As soon as I clocked into work, all my energy—and in turn, all my desire for life—faded away.

Instead, I thought about my side business. For a few years, I’d been running an auto shop in my home garage. I specialized in repairing and modifying classic cars. At one point, I hung up a print (照片) of my favorite automotive shop as a source of inspiration. I knew the owner’s story well: He has a tight work schedule, but his work ethic, artistry, and authenticity never falter(衰退).

In 2019, one of my clients offered me an actual industrial space to run my shop. I was nervous to say yes. Could I really expand my business and keep my government job? Was it wise to give up something with so much security?

Then it dawned on me: The “dream job” had a guaranteed retirement plan for people who work there for 30 years—but after 30 year, would elderly me look back and regret not seizing the opportunity to do things on my own terms? I had my answer.

In 2020, I left the dream job to run my business full time. In 2021, I somehow kept the business afloat, and we moved into a shop that’s double the size. That’s when I realized that my print was still hanging up back at my “first” garage. I thought about how much that print meant to me back then, and how it deserved a place of prominence(杰出) at my new location.

It is now proudly displayed in my humble shop, along with a banner given to me by the owner of the store that I like. It serves as a reminder to hold myself to the same ethos as he—tireless work ethic, ever-evolving artistry, and genuine authenticity. Frankly, this path has not been easy. Since starting my own business, never in my life have I been so tired, frustrated, or anxious. But I live on my own terms and love every second of life.

4How did the author probably feel about his “dream job”?

    AFairly painful. BRather busy.

    CA bit regretful. DVery enjoyable.

5Why did the author mention his favorite automotive shop owner in Paragraph 3?

AHe helped the author expand his shop.

BHe encouraged the author to work hard.

CHe always worked according to his schedule.

DHe was an inspiration for the author to own a shop.

6What did the author mean by his answer?

AHe would refuse to accept the owner’s offer.

BHe would give up his dream job in the end.

CHe would value the print offered by the owner.

DHe would keep a strong desire for his dream job.

7What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

AAll hard work will pay off.

    BWe should respect our heart.

CThere is no shortcut to success.

    DOpportunity is for the prepared.

    3.福建省福州市三校2022-2023学年高三上学期期中联考英语试题

I was sitting at my desk when another graduate student in my lab approached me. “Can you help?” he asked. His experiment wasn’t working and he desperately needed help. I was then a fifth year PhD student, and I took pride in being the senior member of the lab, whom everyone looked up to. But that also meant I was the one everyone turned to for help - which ate away hours, days, and sometimes weeks that I could have spent on my own research.

There were many reasons I had a hard time saying no to such pleas(恳求). I was new to the United States for graduate school. I found it difficult to make new friends and discover activities I enjoyed. So 1 spent a huge chunk of my time in the lab, with my lab-mates serving as my primary source of social connection. I feared that if I brushed them off, I’d lose their favor.

But the extra responsibilities came at a cost. I had to work extra hours to catch up with my own work, and I often made sacrifices to my personal life.

It wasn’t until my wife gave birth to our first child that I realized how thin I had stretched myself - and how misguided my priorities were. While she lay in a hospital bed in the early stages of labor, I sat nearby hunched(伏首前倾的)over my laptop finishing up a work report Hours later, after hearing my daughter’s first cry and watching her tiny fingers grab tightly onto mine, it dawned on me: I should have been fully present during my daughter’s birth. I was clearly spending too much time working if my job had intruded(侵入)into one of life’s most precious moments.

From then on, 1 decided to spend more time with my family by paring down my work tasks and carefully considering each request for help. I still enjoyed collaborating with others, but I prioritized mutually beneficial tasks or those my manager asked me to take on, rather than accepting everything that came my way.

I noticed many benefits: no longer working overtime, more family time, and improved work performance. I was also pleased to discover that “Sorry, I’d love to help but I have a deadline coming up” is an acceptable response to a request for assistance.

It’s hard to say “no” to those you work with. But I’ve learned that sometimes that’s the best course of action to avoid an excessive workload and lead a freer and happier life.

24Why did the author find it difficult to refuse the requests of his lab-mates?

AHe was afraid to be left out by them. BHe wanted to earn their respect.

CHe was the senior member of the lab. DHe had once received help from them.

25What did the author realize after his daughter’s birth?

AHe was guilty for his absence when she was born.

BHis wife had sacrificed a lot for the family.

CHe should have balanced work and life better.

DHe should work harder due to the increased responsibilities.

26Which of the following is closes in meaning to the underlined phrase “paring down” in paragraph 5?

APutting aside. BCutting down. CGetting familiar with. DKeeping track of.

27What is the text mainly about?

AEnjoying family life. BGiving priority to family.

CGiving and taking. DLearning to say “no”.

In January 2022, the now l7-year-old Mack Rutherford watched his 19-year-old sister, Zara Rutherford, set two new world records for flying around the world in an ultralight aircraft. Less than a month later, Mack declared his intention to go for a world record too!

“I always knew I wanted to do something special in my life in aviation but I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do, it was only when my sister flew around the world that I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Mack said.

Mack is no stranger to aviation. He was only 15 when he became the youngest pilot in the world. Now, he’s set the record for the youngest person to fly around the world, replacing previous record-holder Travis Ludlow of Britain. Travis was 18 when he set the record in 2021.

Mack’s journey began on March 23rd, 2022 when he left Sofia, Bulgaria flying a Shark, an ultralight aircraft that’s the same style his sister used in her circumnavigation of the globe.

“I am flying a Shark,” Mack wrote on his website. “It is a high-performance ultralight aircraft made in Europe. The aircraft has been specially prepared for such a long journey.”

Mack traveled through 52 countries over five continents. The trip was supposed to take between two and three months, but paperwork and visa issues slowed his progress.

On August 24, 2022, Mack completed his journey and set not one, but two new world records! He’s now the youngest person to fly around the world solo. He displaced his sister as the previous record holder, but we’re sure there are no hard feelings!

As Mack stepped out of the aircraft in Belgium, he had some simple words of wisdom to offer the world.

    5.2022-2023学年河北省石家庄市二中高三期中考试

I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.

It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.

The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.

What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.

Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.

Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.

Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.

4Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden?

ATo protect the injured skull. BTo prevent herself from sunburn.

CTo avoid being hit by the nuts. DTo reduce the chance of getting bitten by bees.

5What is the tree’s survival strategy?

    AIt attracts beneficial pollinators.

BIt lets out poison to drive away pests.

CIt produces a chemical fatal to some plants.

DIt competes for nutrition with similar species.

6Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with the tree?

AThe volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.

BThe tree outcompetes the native plants in the garden.

CThe tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.

DThe presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.

7The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________.

Ait’s better to give than to take

Btrees and plants have their own ways to flourish

Ceven a good relationship is not always trouble-free

Dacceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be

I carried the flame in 1984 in the Torch Relay as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles. I wasn’t an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics that year, for which I was able to carry the flame. Still it makes me realize that all sorts of honors can come our way unexpectedly.

On one May night, the flame had just begun its journey across America, covering around 15,000 kilometers. It inched its way along the coast from New York, each runner carrying it for a kilometer. Some of the runners were famous and admired. Others were common people like me and supporters of the event.

I had already. been sent a uniform and the official torch. I held it as I stood waiting in the dusk for the flame to arrive. Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that ambitious distance?

All at once it happened. A runner appeared and lit my torch. I was sent on my way. People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed, not for me, but for what I represented: the free expression of athletic skills and the celebration of talent, devotion, and discipline. Soon I passed the flame on to the next runner. I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch of our faith and our values, because we can all be the light of this world. We might wonder if what we have to do or say or show will even matter. But we should step out, lit by our faith and values, and meet people waiting for us all along.

24What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

AThe Torch Relay begun in Los Angeles.

BNot all flame carriers are athletes.

CThe author’s experience made him stand out.

DGreat honor came to the author’s father.

25How did the author feel when waiting for the flame to arrive?

    9.辽宁省名校联盟2022-2023学年高三12月联考

The Colorado 8-year-old will set out Tuesday to become the youngest person to reach the top of El Capitan in California’s Yosemite National Park. He will climb the rock face with the help of the hanging ropes. The journey is expected to take four days “of hanging from your fingers or hanging from your anchors(),”  Sam’s dad Joe Baker told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield on Sunday. They’ll camp one night on the top of El Capitan.

Sam and Joe Baker will climb in a four-person team. It is a Class 5 climb, the highest and most difficult of classifications. The routes are for expert climbers who train regularly and have a lot of natural ability.

“Sam has been training to take on El Capitan every day for the last at least 18 months,” his father said. In addition to physical training, planning how much equipment-including 200 pounds of water-to take for the daylong hike is among the challenges. “You can’t just turn on the water,” Joe said. “You have to carry it with you.”

While making it to the top of El Capitan would set records, that’s not Sam’s motivation for attempting the climb. “I’m most excited to climb with Daddy,” Sam told CNN.

Hanging from the rock face thousands of feet in the air, the climbers will dine on lasagna (意面) they cook from little packets on a gas stove. Sam is also planning a movie night while pausing from the side of the rock. In addition to his climbing accomplishments, Sam is getting really good at chess, so a travel chess set will be along for the climb too.

Aside from the lasagna, watching a movie and playing chess, Sam said “getting to the top” is his favorite part of climbing.

Joe and his wife fell in love while climbing, and Sam did well in a climbing harness (背带) “before he could walk”. When he was 6, Sam took on Lost Arrow Spire, a three-pitch climb that starts 2, 500 feet above Yosemite Valley. Only one other 6-year-old-world-class professional climber Tommy Caldwell, had ever done it.

4What motivated Sam to climb El Capitan?

ACompanionship of his father. BAppealing awards for winning.

CHigh requirements for climbing. DEncouragement from teammates.

5What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    ASam’s advantages as a climber.

    BDifficulties Sam will encounter.

    CSam’s hobbies besides climbing.

DThings Sam will do while climbing.

6What can be inferred from the text?

APlaying games is what Sam like best.

BSam Baker was born into a climbing family.

CThe team has successfully accomplished the climbing.

DSam Baker was the only child finishing Lost Arrow Spire.

7What kind of a boy is Sam?

APolite and modest. BBrave and dependent.

CGifted and hard-working. DNaughty and cooperative.

In order to make sure Harvard is an affordable choice for your undergraduate education, you can consider financial aid packages made up of a combination of four types of funding.

    Scholarships & Grants

Because Harvard is committed to affordability, our scholarships are designed to cover 100% of your demonstrated financial need. Here is our process:

    —Establish your parent contribution;

    —Factor in student employment and outside awards;

—Cover the remaining needs by scholarship funds which never need to be repaid.

    Outside Awards

Like many of our students, you may receive funds from sources outside Harvard, such as secondary schools, your parental employers, etc. Since the intention of these awards is that they be used for educational purposes, you must report them to Harvard and apply them toward your college expenses. We will consider your outside awards as a part of your overall financial aid funding.

    Student Employment

If you receive financial aid from Harvard, you will likely be expected to contribute to your education through employment. Your expected term-time work expectation is often around 10 to 12 hours per week. All wages earned are paid directly to you, rather than appearing on your term bill, and can be used to help pay for your out-of-pocket personal expenses.

    Loans

You are not expected to take out loans, since our aid packages are designed to cover your financial need without additional borrowing. However, you may choose to pursue loans to help cover your student or family contribution. If you are interested in a loan, we will help you find one that works for you.

    B

When I was 9 and walking on the road, the people of my village frowned at me, a young girl in a school uniform. They asked Dad, “Why waste your money like this?” Dad said nothing and told me to walk ahead. Education was very important to him. He would sit us down and paint a picture with colors of the future he saw for us in every letter we wrote, in every math problem we solved.

However, today as I sit at my wedding, there are still plenty of colors all over the room: red on my nails, gold necklaces around my neck, and white roses lying in the center. Women in pink from all over the village sit in a circle playing the hand-drum. My uncle spared no expense when it came to decorations, jewelry and clothing — which was ironic(讽刺的), because obviously, he had no other financial option but to marry off his 15-year-old niece who was declared his responsibility after the tragic death of his sister and brother-in-law. But it was a matter of izzat he said, not wanting to cheaper himself.

Izzat, what a funny word. It was so delicately placed on the shoulders of every woman in this society, getting heavier as she grows older yet somehow weaker — the tiniest wind can tear it to pieces. Izzat. Maybe one day I’ll live in a village where izzat is torn up through marrying a girl twenty-three years younger than you, and by selling off your only daughter because there was no other solution for your poor family.

Maybe one day, I’ll live in a world where the birth of a girl isn’t followed by a sigh or a ‘Never mind. Next time. ‘On that day, we’ll hand over crayons to our young girls, and watch them color our world; we’ll tell them: deepen the blue of the sky by flying planes through them, paint the grass greener with every football match you play and leave traces of silver from the surgical knife in your hand — take any other color you need and draw rainbows upon rainbows until they’re enough to build a bridge to your dreams. One day, for sure.

24Why did people frown at the author?

    AThey disliked her school uniform.

    BThey treated girls’ education lightly.

CThey thought she was too young for school.

DThey wondered why her dad was speechless.

25What does the underlined word “izzat” mean in paragraph 2?

    AHonor. BAmbition. CFortune. DKnowledge.

26What can be inferred about the girls from paragraph 3?

AThey are considered as the future of society.

BThey are supposed to be gifted in all walks of life.

CThey are regarded as tradable goods for the family.

DThey are thought to be responsible for their marriage.

27What is a suitable title for the text?

AColor the Girls’Future BLive Up to Family Izzat

CMarry Your Mr. Right DBe Father’s Daughter
