It was a stormy evening. Neil had thought he could get home on time, but his busy work was again stopping him from spending time with his family. The bus stop on the way provided a small shelter(遮蔽物)where Neil was increasingly worried with every minute passing. His wife and the seven-year-old son had told him to come home early. He didn’t want to let them down.
“Sir, why don’t you buy a packet of peanuts (花生) from me?” Neil looked around and saw a man standing by his side. “Oh, no, I’m not interested right now.” “Fried peanuts will do you a world of good. You can also take some for your family.” As the peanut seller said, he filled a bag with the remaining peanuts and offered them to Neil at a low price. But Neil still refused to buy them.
Suddenly, Neil heard a voice of a kid. “Dad, have you sold out the peanuts? My mum told me that we would have money to buy me books then.” He saw a ten-year-old boy, totally wet from top to bottom as though he had just run a race. The peanut seller quickly took off his cost and threw it over his son and said with a forced smile. “Yes, yes. Let’s go home soon. Your mother will be worried.”
Neil turned to the man. When they both made eye contact, Neil noticed a look of what it was to be a hard-working father. He found the man in front of him was so respectable(值得尊敬的). Traveling between Earth and space in an elevator (电梯), moving Earth away from the sun with huge engines . . . If you have watched the sci-fi blockbuster (大片) The Wandering Earth II, you must have been wowed by these amazing technologies. How far are these imaginative ideas from reality? Could we really achieve these things someday? Let’s take a look.
● Earth engines
In the movie, the sun is becoming bigger and will “eat” Earth. People plan to build tens of thousands of engines on Earth in order to push it away from the sun. The energy will come from a nuclear fusion reaction (核聚变反应). Would this be possible?
Wang Teng at the Chinese Academy of Sciences told Xinhua that in theory (理论上), nuclear fusion is powerful enough to move Earth. According to Wang, controllable nuclear fusion is one of the key problems scientists all over the world are working on. In the reaction, two atoms (原子) join into a heavier one, which creates a great amount of energy. It’s the same energy that powers the sun and other stars.
In December 2022, US scientists made a big breakthrough (突破). For the first time in history, they made a nuclear fusion reaction that produced more energy than it cost. Although the energy gain (获得) was not much—only enough for boiling about 9.5 liters of water, scientists are positive they could use this reaction to produce clean energy in the future.
● Space elevators
The space elevators in the movie look really cool. They travel fast between cables that connect Earth and the space station. According to Wang Yuanzhuo from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this idea first came from Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in 1895 after seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The basic idea for space elevators is to connect one end of the cable to Earth and the other end to a space station that flies at the same speed Earth rotates (旋转). But the challenge, as experts told Xinhua, is to find the right material for the cables. A carbon nanotube (碳纳米管) might work. A short tube of 1.6 grams can hold more than 800 tons, which is about 160 elephants. Since its discovery in 1991, scientists have been trying to create a tube that is as long as possible. But the longest tube was only about half a meter, developed by a team at Tsinghua University in 2013.
If we can bring the design into reality, space elevators can save lots of energy and money compared with rockets. It will also make our trip to space a lot easier.
42.According to Wang Teng, ________.
A.moving Earth with engines is impossible in theory
B.nuclear fusion is still uncontrollable so far
C.the number of engines needed to move Earth is unpredictable
D.moving the sun and other stars is possible in theory
43.What was the big breakthrough in nuclear fusion reaction in late 2022?
A.It produced more energy than it cost.
B.It produced 9.5 liters of water.
C.It proved the safety of a nuclear fusion reaction.
D.It produced the cleanest energy all over the world.
44.Which are necessary for building a space elevator?
a. The space elevator should be made of carbon nanotube.
b. The cable that connects Earth and the space station is long enough.
c. The space station flies at the same speed Earth rotates.
d. The cable that connects Earth and the space station is strong enough.
A.abc B.abd C.acd D.bcd
45.What can we infer from the technologies in the movie?
A.High technologies have dark sides as well.
B.Environmental problems should be noticed.
C.Sci-fi works are not all about imagination.
D.They cannot be achieved even in theory.

Eradajere Oleita often finds ways to give back on her birthday. As her 25th birthday was coming in 2022, she started looking for her next project. She found it when she watched a video on the Internet about how to iron foil-lined(铝箔内衬的)chip bags into sleeping bags. Oleita said the video gave her the idea of the Chip Bag Project.
“The project allows me to bring two of my thoughts together, people and the environment.” Oleita said. “We throw so many things away and never think about where that’s ending”.
“It takes about four hours to make a sleeping bag. Each takes about 150 to 300 chip bags,” Oleita told The Detroit News. “Our sleeping bags are better than the cotton ones. They are waterproof(防水的) and light. They are easy to carry as well.”
Since 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected over 800,000 chip bags and created 110 sleeping bags.
“Whenever we get a chip bag, we’re preventing something going into our water,” Oleita said. “And when we give somebody a bag, we’re giving warmth, and we’re helping a human life.”
The Chip Bag Project is just the latest environmental project for Oleita. She has also worked with the Youth Energy Squad. One of her first large projects was creating a 6-foot-tall Minion(小黄人)out of recycled plastic bottles.
“Before, I thought environmental things had nothing to do with people like me,” Oleita said. “But now I believe that each of us can do something to the future of the world by training people not to be careless with their things, and at the same time we can help people in need.”
