When I was a puppy, I entertained you and made you laugh. You called me your child, and I became your best friend. Whenever I was “bad”, you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?” My house-training took a little longer than expected, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, and stopped for ice cream.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. She, now your wife, was not a “dog person”, but I was happy because you were happy. When the human babies came along, I shared your excitement and I wanted to mother them, too. Yet I spent most of my time being driven to another room. Fortunately, as they began to grow, I became their friend.
Then you had a better job in another city, and the new apartment didn’t allow pets. You made the right decision to send me to an animal shelter for your “family”. I was excited about the car ride until we arrived there. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. At the gate, your son screamed in tears and you had to loosen his fingers from my collar.
Sometimes when I heard human footsteps, I thought it was you. It never was. Finally, the day came. As I felt the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into the staff’s kind eyes and murmured “How could you?”
Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said “I’m so sorry.” And with my last bit of energy, I tried to tell her that my “How could you?” was not directed at her. It was you, My Beloved Master. I will think of you and wait for you forever.
    4. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
    A. A lovely puppy.
    B. The patient puppy owner.

    C. It didn’t like the babies at first.
    D. It wasn’t popular with the family.
    6. Why did the son scream in tears at the gate of the animal shelter?
    A. He didn’t want to leave the dog behind.
    B. The shelter wasn’t good enough.
    C. He was afraid of the dogs.
    D. His father went away.
    7. What can be the best title for this passage?
    A. How Could You?
    B. My Beloved Master
    C. The Death of a Dog
    D. What is the Power of Loyalty?

Icelanders have a beautiful tradition of giving books to each other on Christmas Eve and then spending the night reading. This custom is so deeply rooted in the culture that it is the reason for the Jolabokaflod, or “Christmas Book Flood”, when the majority of books in Iceland are sold between September and December in preparation for Christmas giving.
At this time of year, most families receive a yearly free book catalog of new publications called the Bokatidindi. Icelanders read the new catalog carefully and choose which books they want to buy, fueling what Kristjan B. Jonasson, president of the Iceland Publishers Association, describes as “the backbone of the publishing industry”.
The small Nordic island, with a population of only 329,000 people, is extraordinarily literary. They love to read and write. According to Rosie Goldsmith of the BBC, “The country has more writers, more books published and more books read, than most countries in the world.”
In North America, e-books have grown in popularity — it’s not the same in Iceland. One bookstore manager told NPR, “In Iceland, you give paper books instead of e-books as gifts.” The book industry is driven by the majority of people buying several books each year, rather than the North American pattern of a few people buying a lot of books.
When I asked an Icelandic friend what she thought of this tradition, she was surprised. “I hadn’t thought of this as a special Icelandic tradition. It’s true that a book is always considered as a nice gift. We’re very proud of our authors,” said she.
It sounds like a wonderful tradition, perfect for a winter evening. I’ll include it into my own family’s celebration of Christmas. I doubt my loyalty(忠诚) to paper books will ever fade; they are what I can’t resist collecting, in order to read and re-read them, to beautify and personalize my home, to pass them on to friends and family as needed. Combining my love for books with quiet and relaxing Christmas Eves sounds like a perfect match.
    8. Why do many Icelanders buy books between September and December?
    A. To honor Kristjan B. Jonasson. B. To use them as Christmas gifts.
    C. To prepare for a reading festival. D. To support the publishing industry.
    9. What can we know about the book industry in Iceland?
    A. E-books have become more popular.
    B. Paper books are placed more value on.
    C. People’s love for books seems to fade.
    D. A few people buy most of the new books.
    10. What does the author’s Icelandic friend think of the Icelandic tradition?
    A. It comes as a surprise. B. It proves less popular.
    C. It is rather unique. D. It is quite ordinary.
    11. What is the last paragraph intended to show?
    A. The author’s family tradition on Christmas.
    B. The reason for the author’s interest in reading.
    C. The influence of the tradition on the author.
    D. The wide spread of the wonderful tradition.

Even though we may believe that it’s important to say thank you, sometimes expressing gratitude is easier said than done. We might find ourselves getting hung up on the best way to deliver the message.
However, it’s possible that we might be making our thanks more complex. In a paper, researchers compared the effects of expressing thanks in person, over a video call, and over text. And, while people generally expect an in-person thank you to be the most effective, what happened in reality was quite different: Sending a thank-you over text was almost as effective as that. Additionally, texting may be especially well-suited for situations where we feel awkward or embarrassed about expressing our appreciation.
In the study, 219 college students participated in a gratitude activity in which they wrote about three things they were grateful for over a two-week period. After writing, the students were asked to actually thank the persons involved. Some connected with the gratitude recipients(接受者) in person, others via video call, and others via text. At the beginning and end of the two weeks, participants completed surveys measuring their feelings of well-being, connections with others, loneliness and happiness.
The researchers found that people who expressed gratitude gained increased happiness, with only a few differences for the different methods of gratitude expression. Overall, video calls were just as beneficial as meeting in person. Texting was slightly less effective than video calling — it didn’t make people feel more connected and happier, while video calling did. However, participants who sent their thanks over text still experienced benefits: Texting improved their well-being and reduced their loneliness.
Overall, however, the message is that we shouldn’t worry about finding just the “best” way to express our gratitude. In fact, you’re better off sending a quick thank you shortly after you receive the kindness than waiting for an occasion to schedule an in-person visit. Don’t put it off just for finding the best way — many times our gratitude goes unsaid because we spend too much time on the details.
    12. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Making a video call. B. Sending a text message.
    C. Expressing thanks in person. D. Writing a thank-you letter.
    13. Why did the researchers ask the students to finish surveys?
    A. To find the effect of expressing thanks on them.
    B. To measure their physical health.
    C. To collect a lot more ways to express thanks.
    D. To know their views on gratitude.
    14. What did the research suggest?
    A. In-person gratitude was less likely to be accepted.
    B. Expressing gratitude could benefit mental health.
    C. Ways of gratitude expression should be improved.
    D. Texting made the gratitude recipients much happier.
    15. What are we advised to do to express thanks?
    A. Search for the best way. B. Wait for an in-person visit.
    C. Express gratitude in time. D. Make careful preparations.

    【答案】
    Dear Maria,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 3 student. Learning that our English club is collecting some suggestions on English activities, I’m writing to give my advice on setting up an English Corner.
The English Corner is expected to be held at the stadium from 5 p. m. to 6 p. m. every Tuesday with all the students and foreign teachers in our school invited. By providing a platform for participants to communicate in English based on specific topics, exchange English learning tips and make friends, the English Corner aims to get more students interested in English. Additionally, with the help of foreign teachers and varieties of activities, not only will the students develop their ability to use English properly, but also they’ll build up their confidence.
I hope my proposal will be taken into account. Looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
