Food serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural and urban areas within one country.
Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition hits its roots in the custom of sharing bread.
Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies success in the New Year for the person who receives it.
Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving redcolored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and mooncakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.
Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.

Scientists have found that eating dark chocolate appears to lower the risk of depression by four fold. While 7.6 percent of the 13,000 people surveyed reported depressive symptoms, just 1.5 percent of the chocolate eaters did. The study also found that the people who consumed the most
of any chocolate were also 57 percent less likely to report depressive symptoms.
The study is the first to examine the association with depression according to the type of chocolate consumed. The team assessed data from 13,626 adults from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
A range of other factors including height, weight, marital status, education, household income, physical activity, smoking and chronic (慢性的) health problems were also taken into account to ensure the study only measured chocolate's effect on depressive symptoms.
After adjusting for these factors, it was found that individuals who reported eating any dark chocolate in two 24-hour periods had 70 percent lower odds of reporting clinically relevant depressive symptoms in the previous two weeks than those who reported not eating chocolate at all.
Chocolate contains a number of psychoactive ingredients (精神活性成分) which produce a feeling of euphoria (兴奋感) similar to that of cannabinoid (大麻素), found in cannabis. It also contains phenylethylamine (苯基乙胺), which is believed to be important for regulating people's moods.
However British scientists urged caution about the findings, suggesting that the decision to eat dark chocolate could be linked to other health factors. For example, people who choose dark chocolate may be more health conscious in general, which is known to protect against depression.
Depressed people are also more likely to crave more sugary fatty foods and so could be less likely to pick a dark alternative when choosing chocolate.
8.What is the aim of the study?
A.To find a cure for depression.
B.To find out the cause of depression.
C.To research on the ingredients of chocolate.
D.To study association between depression and chocolate.
9.What is phenylethylamine?
A.Something that can make people excited.
B.Something that can adjust people's moods.
C.Something that can make people depressed.
D.Something that can make people overweight.
10.What is British scientists' attitude toward the findings?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Cautious.
11.What are depressed people more likely to do?
A. Eat sugary fatty foods. B. Have dark chocolates.
C. Exercise outdoors. D. Concern about health.
答案:DBDA
The study is the first to examine the association with depression according to the type of chocolate consumed."
根据第五段最后一句中"which is believed to be important for regulating people's moods"可知,苯基乙胺是调节人们情绪的东西。
However British scientists urged caution about the findings, suggesting that the decision to eat dark chocolate could be linked to other health factors."
Depressed people are also more likely to crave more sugary fatty foods and so could be less likely to pick a dark alternative when choosing chocolate."

Skyscrapers are the symbol of urban life. City people are used to seeing tall buildings and apartments. Farms, on the other hand, are associated with rural(农村的) life. However, there are experts who think skyscrapers should become farms to meet the increasing food needs.
By the middle of this century, some scientists suggest, almost 80% of the Earth's population could live in cities. In addition, the population could increase to 9. 1 billion during that time yet the amount of land available for farming will be the same. If current farming practices don't change, we will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet.
Vertical farms, where urban farmers could grow crops in environment friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make it a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops.
Vertical farms would have many advantages, supporters say. Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases. Besides, crops would not suffer from problems like flooding. Finally, vertical farms would reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over long distances.
Some argue that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the day, it wouldn't be enough. For this reason, vertical farms would need additional light sources, such as artificial light.
Another way of growing fresh food is to build urban farms on rooftops. This more practical approach may be more achievable than the idea of farms in skyscrapers, researchers suggest. Experts agree that innovative (革新的) farming practices are needed to support the need for more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and to the consumer, but the best ideas have yet to come.
12.What primary problem could vertical farming settle?
A.Poor state of rural life.
B.Shortage of food supply.
C.High cost of transporting crops.
D.Environmental pollution by traditional farming.
13.What is the advantage of vertical farming?
A.It can produce organic food. B.It requires little care.
C.It can benefit transport industry. D.It needs very low cost.
14.What is a big challenge of making vertical farming a reality?
A.Farmable land. B.Crop diseases.
C.Light sources. D.Climate conditions.
15.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Future Food Needs B.Symbol of Urban Life
C.Fanning on Rooftops D.Farms of the Future
答案:BACD
If current farming practices don't change, we will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet." Vertical farms... could be the solution."
Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases."
For this reason, vertical farms would need additional light sources, such as artificial light."

Food is life;it gives us the nourishment we need to stay alive and be healthy. Usually, we eat because we are hungry or need energy. Brian Wansink, a professor at the University of Illinois, says we also eat certain foods because they make us feel good, and remind us of happy memories. 1 For some people, ice cream is a comfort food. For others, a bowl of noodles makes them feel good.
2 Professor Wansink believes that we associate food with important times, feelings, and people in our lives. “When I was a child, my mother made a delicious soup; I loved it. 3 And it helps me feel better,” says one of Wansink's co-workers.
Do men and women choose different comfort foods? Wansink's research at the University of Illinois says “yes”. In his study, the favorite comfort food for both men and women is ice cream. Besides this, men usually prefer hot, delicious foods like soup or noodles. 4 Men and women like to eat comfort foods when they are happy, but women eat these foods more when they are sad or worried.
5 About 40 percent of the comfort foods in Wansink's study are healthy dishes like soups and vegetables. It shows, says Wansink, that a comfort food can taste good and be good for you overall.
A.Not all comfort foods are junk food.
B.Where can we buy this sort of food?
C.Sweet foods are also their preference.

Ladies and gentlemen,
I feel greatly honored to be here to tell you something about Chinese banquet customs. Firstly, banquets are usually held in private rooms in restaurants. Guests will be met at the door and led to the banquet room where they will be guided to their places. Occasions are rare when guests sit where they please. Secondly, while at banquets, guests don't begin to eat until the host raises his chopsticks. And it's rude to stop eating in the middle of a banquet. Finally, the host will say good-bye to everyone at the door and stay longer to pay the bill.
Thank you for listening.

Then at 26,another baby girl joined our family. Unfortunately, this baby girl had Down syndrome(唐氏综合征).
How would I be able to break the news to my mother? “It is better to be smart than to be beautiful. ” I knew what “smart” meant in the statement, and I doubted if my baby with an extra chromosome(染色体) would meet those expectations. At last she told me that I should face the reality bravely. We should support her new grandbaby well.
Six years later,Nichole runs to mom whenever we see each other. Every time my mother plays with her new grandbaby happily and buys some beautiful toys though the girl is suffering from serious disease. The girl gets on well with my mother.
