Recommending cultural highlights
- 获取邮件中介绍美国纽约曼哈顿百老汇文化区等具体信息,初步理解文化亮点的意义;
- 复习与关注电子邮件的基本文体特点,体会运用不同方法表达个人喜好及推荐理由;
Step 1 Lead-in 5 min
|
Q1: Which place in New York did Selena recommend that Jiang should visit? Q2: What is special about it?
Step 2 Reading the email & learning skills 10 min
| 1. T asks Ss to read the email aloud and check the answers to the questions in Activity 5 to help Ss get a general idea about the email. 2. T asks Ss to reread the email to learn skills of recommending a place of cultural highlights by saying “Broadway district does sound like a good place to visit, right? Now let’s have a second look at the email to learn some writing tips. While you are rereading the email, please locate some key information about the recommended place, what it is like (in blue), reasons for recommendation (with underlines), and a good manner in writing an email.”
Dear Jiang, Great to hear you’re coming to the US! I hope I can convince you to stop by and visit us in New York. There’re so many things to see and do here in the Big Apple. It would take a lifetime to list them all! But knowing you as I do, I’d suggest walking through Midtown Manhattan. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the US and just can’t be missed! Broadway district with its cafés, street performers and enormous and colorful signs really captures New York’s loud spirit! As Broadway is the heart of the American theater industry, it’s at night when it truly comes alive. Broadway is famous for its big theaters, showing Shakespeare, modern drama, dance shows or musicals – take your pick! With your love of singing and interest in amateur dramatics, I’d recommend a musical. It’s a moving and intense experience that I’m sure you would love – a bit like Peking Opera! Quite a few musicals are based on classic stories like Les Misérables or Peter Pan, and they might even inspire you to read the books, too! My big news is that we’re all thinking about doing a big trip in China in the winter vacation. We’re looking for a combination of fun and traditional culture. Can you recommend a place of cultural highlights? See you soon!
3. T help Ss focus on some writing tips, saying “Selena recommends the place from the general to the detailed and also with personal reasons (coherence). The sentences with ! (exclamation mark) did show Selena’s enthusiasm in introducing her recommendation (emotion). And Selena was very polite and friendly from the beginning to the end (manner).” 4. Then T helps Ss focus on the idea of cultural highlights by saying “At the end of the email, Selena was excited to tell Jiang that she’s coming to China in the winter vacation and asked for Jiang’s recommendation for a combination of fun and traditional culture. If you were Jiang, what do you think of places with cultural highlights in China? What is special about these places?” Now let’s work on our task of replying Selena.”

Step 4 Writing & Polishing 15 min | By referring to the criteria on accuracy of words and sentences, coherence of the structure, emotional expressions and manner, T presents one sample email with the common structure of greetings, recommended place, and reasons for recommendation and closing. Ss write and polish their final drafts with the criteria in the previous step. |
