    I. Learning objectives

    By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

    1. learn about the definition and the verb form of past perfect tense;

    2. summarize the grammatical rules of past perfect tense;

    3. apply the rules in new situations appropriately.

    Develop the thinking ability by analyzing and summarizing the grammar rules.

     

    III. Predicted area of difficulty

    1. How to use past perfect tense freely and properly in their writing and speaking.

    2. Explore the rules of past perfect tense.

     

    IV.Teaching procedures

    Step 1 Warming up

    1. T asks the Ss to read part A on page 6 and complete the True or False exercise.

    1)    He regularly visited the library and studied English and Law---by then he had learnt very little French.                                                                 (    )

    2)    By the age of 25, he had become a teacher.                                  (    )

    3)    He used the same business strategy he employed at the St Louis Post-Dispatch and sales of the newspaper mounted up until it was the bestselling newspaper in the country.          (    )

    1. T asks the Ss the following questions

    1)    When and where was Joseph Pulitzer born?

    Suggested answer: Joseph Pulitzer was born on April 10, 1847, in Hungary.

    2)    When did Joseph Pulitzer found the newspaper the St Louis Post-Dispatch?

    Suggested answer: In 1878.

    3)    In 1892, what did he offer Columbia University money to start?

    Suggested answer: He offered Columbia University money to start a school of journalism.

    4)    When were the first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded?

    Suggested answer: Six years after Joseph Pulitzers death.

    【设计意图: 老师一开始通过分享Joseph Pulitzer的生活故事,设置对与错以及回答问题的练习让学生在具体的情境中提前感知本节课的语法知识。很自然地引入本堂课的语法内容,同时带入了话题,也为本堂课的终极任务做好了铺垫。】

     

    Step 2Exploring and working out the rules

    1. T has the Ss finish the table in part A.

    He regularly visited the library and studied English and Law---by then he had learnt very little English.                                                                

    By the age of 25, he had become a publisher.                                

    He used the same business strategy he had employed at the St Louis Post-Dispatch and sales of the newspaper mounted up until it was the bestselling newspaper in the country.

    1. T has students finish Working out the rules of part A on page 6.       

    We often use the past perfect tense to talk about something that happened (1) ____________ (before/after) a past action or state.

    The verb form of the past perfect tense is (2)______________(have/had done).

    1. T has students go through Grammar notes on page 98. Give explanations if necessary.

    Step 3 Applying the rules

    1. T asks the Ss to finish part B1.

    B1 Circle the mistakes and correct them in the blanks below.

    1)    Pulitzer knew that he had learnt very little English, so he had started to work hard at the language.

    After finishing the box, T asks the Ss to answer the following questions: 

    1)    Who had devoted a lot before The Pulitzer Prizes were established?

    Suggested answer: Joseph Pulitzer.

    2)    What categories have The Pulitzer Prizes also expanded to include?

    Suggested answer: Photography and music.

    Step 4 Topic talking and sharing

    1. T asks the Ss to talk about Zou Taofens life story according to the timeline and share it with each other.

    Example: By the time he was 31, Zou Taofen had become the chief editor of Life Weekly.

    Sample answer:

    Zou Taofen was born in 1895, in Fujian. He graduated from university at the age of twenty-six, in 1921. The next year, he became an editor. He had worked as an editor for four years before he became the chief editor of Life Weekly. In 1931, he started campaigning against the Japanese invasion. By the time he was forty, he had started a new journal called Life of the Masses. Zou had established himself as a famous journalist and publisher before he died in Shanghai in 1944.

     

    【设计意图:学生根据课文的时间轴,结合语法知识,进一步巩固本节课的核心知识,将过去完成时的用法融入到真实语言中,鼓励学生学习理解、应用实践、迁移创新, 达到学以致用的目的。不仅培养培养学生的批判性思维能力,而且帮助学生提升语言表达能力,为写作打好语言基础。】

     

    V. Homework

    1. Search the information online and write a life story of your favorite people.

    2. Complete part C of the workbook on page 56
