Today’s festivals have many origins: some are religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events. Since ancient times some celebrations would take place after hunters had caught animals because people would starve if food was difficult to find. Many poets have written a lot of poems for festivals. Festivals let us have fun with each other, be proud of our customs and beliefs.
In Europe, when the food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over, it is a necessity that there will be a celebration, in which some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the most handsome rooster. In China, people get together to celebrate the harvest time and admire the beauty of the moon on the Mid-autumn Festival. The most energetic festivals are the ones that look forward to the arrival of spring because it is a prediction that everything will come to life. Some western countries have very exciting carnivals before Easter, including parades, dancing the streets day and night, and colorful clothing of all fashions. Easter is an important festival for worldwide Christians, which celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead to save them to gain independence from the world. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later and the country looks as though it is covered with pink snow.
For Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of the ancestors. However, in Mexico, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on this important feast day. In western countries, Halloween is now a children’s festival, when they can dress up and play a trick on or fool others to ask for sweets without permission.
It is obvious that The Qixi Festival, which is on the lunar July 7th, reminds us of love, forgiveness and apology like the western Valentine’s Day. Long time ago, the weaving girl met the herd boy and they fell in love. However, the Goddess of Heaven made them separated forever. The weaving girl drowned her sadness in weep. Later the Goddess of Heaven announced that the couple could wipe away tears and set off from the sides of the Milky Way to meet once a year by crossing the bridge of magpies and she would keep her word.
