第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分, 满分25分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
An ageing population is a global phenomenon. Countries are looking for the balm to address the demands of a swelling elderly community.
Many nations are threatened by a shortage of healthcare workers because of unenviable tasks such as bathing, feeding and changing the diapers. Advancements in technology now present an innovative solution to this. Japan has now developed carebots, specially-designed robots, to replace human caregivers. Japan is also working at more coordinated care for the elderly within the community which includes the integration of hospitals, homecare, elderly care centres and nursing homes. Putting in place a system that can effectively track and retrieve the medical history of every elderly person, Japan leverages technology to provide quality healthcare for the seniors.
The unique feature about Sweden is that most of the elderly live in their own homes where they continue to enjoy living independently. Local governments allocate funds and manage services while citizens have the freedom to choose the type of home services and their service provider. They can apply for homecare services including delivering meals to homes, hanging curtains, changing light bulbs etc. In Sweden, the focus is also on preventive care—keeping the elderly healthy. The elderly who are ill are not just given medicines but also a specific type of physical activity, where their doctors also monitor the outcome.
Singapore also provides more homecare services and day-care centres where the older people can go for rehabilitative and social activities. Besides, the government is creating more dementia-friendly communities, where support comes from the community. Various people within a community like policemen, shopkeepers and other volunteers are trained to assist the elderly with dementia (痴呆). With greater community awareness and support, it is more plausible for a dementia sufferer to stay at home instead of a nursing home.
In our search for the best model to meet the demands of a burgeoning ageing population, let us keep in mind that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. What is important is shouldering the responsibilities of caring for them and ensuring them to age well and comfortably.
21. How does Japan deal with the problem of the shortage of healthcare workers?
A. By offering quality healthcare for the seniors.
B. By tracking the medical history of every elderly person.
C. By developing robots programmed with caregiving functions.
D. By integrating places like hospitals, homecare, and nursing homes.
22. According to the passage, what do Sweden and Singapore have in common?
A. Optional care services are both provided free.
B. Independent living is respected and supported.
C. Preventive care for the elderly is highly valued.
D. Social activities and voluntary help are enjoyed.
23. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Models for giving the elderly care.
B. Countries with an ageing population.
C. Responsibilities of caring for the elderly.
D. Demands of a growing elderly community.
B
With intelligent systems and new-age networks, life in the big cities will likely be happier and more efficient. After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report.
These cities will use 5G networks to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Cities like Boston, Baltimore, Amsterdam and Copenhagen are already using smart technology to improve people’s lives.
But what exactly does a smart city do? Let’s look at a few examples. In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic jam as they ride.
Smart cities will be interactive, allowing their residents to feel like they’re truly shaping their environment, instead of merely existing in it. “One of the most important reasons to have a smart city is that we can actually communicate with our environment in a way that we never had in the past,” Mrinalini Ingram told Tech Republic.
Of course, it will take time and money to turn our present cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already using smart technology in small ways. China, for example, is making investments in big cities like Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure (基础设施).
24. What can a smart city actually do in people’s daily life?
A. A real-time traffic jam can be reported.
B. More and more people will live in big cities.
C. It can replace workers to empty a trash can.
D. People can ride bikes in an easier way.
25. What does the author mean by saying “Smart cities will be interactive”?
A. People in big cities will benefit from intelligent systems.
B. More and more big cities will use smart technology.
C. We will show a deeper passion for building our new cities.
D. We will communicate with the environment in a new way.
26. What is the author’s opinion about smart cities?
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Negative.
C
My name is Madonna. I'd like to explain that I was not named after the famous star. I don’t blame your curiosity though. Every time I introduce myself, I always get some kind of reaction. Whether it’s a surprised reaction, a disbelieved reaction, or a simple laugh, everyone seems to have something to say about my name. Not to say that I don’t like my name, I love it, but sometimes it can honestly feel like both a blessing and a curse(令人烦恼的事物)
To clear things up, I was actually named after Mother Mary. Madonna is Italian for the saint’s name and my parents loved the uniqueness behind the religious meaning. Everyone just assumes I was named after the famous star. When I introduce myself, I usually have to do it twice: once to say who l am, and twice to answer that person’s double take on my name. Usually it’s followed by a reference to a song by Madonna. Afterwards, if this person is especially outgoing, I can get asked if I sing and 1 slowly disappoint him or her when I say I can’t. This is a common cycle when I meet new people. Sometimes I get tired of the repetition.
However, it’s not entirely bad to have such a name. For example, when I first moved into m college dormitory, a residential advisor came to me, introduced himself and said a bunch of residentia advisors were talking about me because of my name. I hadn’t even moved in yet and I was already the talk of the town. And having a name like Madonna is a great icebreaker, so the first meeting can usually start smoothly. It’s also nice to know people will remember you when you are trying to leave a good impression.
27. Why do people have different reactions when the author introduces herself?
A. She has a very famous name.
B. She looks like a famous star.
C. She tells her name very proudly.
D. She can sing Madonna's songs.
28. What is the reason for Madonna’s parents to give her the name?
A. They loved Italian names.
B. They had high hopes for her.
C. They loved the meaning of it.
D. They were the fans of the famous star.
29. What feeling does the author mention in Para. 2 towards her name?
A. Shame. B. Annoyance.
C. Disappointment. D. Embarrassment.
30. What may the author agree on her name?
A. It should be changed.
B. It urges her to study harder.
C. It is the best gift from her parents.
D. It benefits her a little once in a while.

Price Of A Miracle
Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful Mom with desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully: 47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store. She waited patiently for pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice, “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
“I just know he’s really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my Dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”
