The United Kingdom is a land of natural beauty and history, with many of its finest attractions discovered through hiking. Now, dust off your boots, plan according to the following routes presented by a survey of senior hikers and an incredible experience will wait for you.
Wales Coastal Path
Wales is the only country in the world that has an official walking path covering its whole borders. The Wales Coastal Path is a footpath stretching 870 miles from Chester to Chepstow. Walking the whole thing might be demanding, but there are plenty of stretches that can be enjoyed over a day or two.
Southwest Coast Path
You need a fair amount of annual leave, a casual 52 days or so, to undertake this in one go. The route runs from Somerset all the way to Dorset, via rugged cliffs, cute fishing villages and surfing spots along the coastline. You can surely jump on to any point as you like, but you can't afford to miss all the pubs full of jokes and laughter on the way!
Coast to Coast Walk
This long-distance trail isn’t official, but popular in the country, taking hikers from the Irish Sea to the North Sea as it rolls into historic Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. Following local footpaths, the route takes you through three UK National Parks: the Lakes, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.
Cleveland Way
You’ll want nine days to folly complete this hike, which explores both the North York Moors and the county’s world-famous coastline. Just make sure you allow enough time to properly enjoy spots like Roseberry Topping hill and pick up a gentle afternoon walk at Whitby’s clifftop church.
21.Who will be more interested in the routes?
A.Explorers in the UK. B.Hiking lovers.
C.Nature photographers. D.Field researchers.
22.What is highly recommended about Southwest Coast Path?
A.Fishing villages. B.Surfing spots.
C.Local pubs. D.National parks.
23.What do the four routes have in common?
A.They include cliffs worth visiting. B.They are official and demanding.
C.They run along the coast. D.They can be completed in a month.

Space tourism is the term used to describe space travel for recreational or leisure purposes. What was once only a dream, as described in A Space Odyssey by Arthur C.Clarke, is now becoming a reality.
Futurologists attempt to make predictions of what life will be like in the future. After the first man landed on the moon, they thought that hotels would be built on the moon by the year 2000. They also considered the possibility that, in the 21st century, families might go for a holiday on the moon. Neither of these predictions have come true yet-but the rapid development of technology may mean these predictions are possible in the years to come.
Space Adventures is currently the only company to have succeeded in sending paying passengers into space. It worked with the Federal Space Agency of Russia and Rocket and Space Corporation Energia to provide flights for the world’s first private space explorers. Each paid over $20 million for their 10-day trip to the International Space Station.
Following successful explorations into space, other companies are now considering the possibility of enabling tourists to visit space. To make it affordable, suborbital space travel is being considered by some companies, like Virgin Galactic. Passengers would be transported to a height of between 100 and 160 km above earth, experience 3—6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of the stars before back to earth. This is expected to cost around $200, 000 per person.
Whilst it could be an enriching experience, there are some disadvantages. Many critics say that a huge growth in the spaceflight industry could drastically speed up the process of global warming. The ozone layer would be damaged further and the polar regions would suffer. In addition, space travel is only really affordable for the super-rich, though Virgin Galactic claims to be ‘opening space to the rest of us’.
24.What do you know about space tourism?
A.It is nothing but a dream. B.It’s only in some fairy tales.
C.It’s a sightseeing tour in space. D.It’s a scientific expedition.
25.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The future life on the moon. B.Landing on the moon in 1969.
C.Predictions about trips to the moon. D.The history of the moon exploration.
26.Why is suborbital space travel considered possible?
A.It’s cheaper. B.It’s safer. C.It’s greener. D.It’s convenient.
27.What is some critics’ major concern about space tourism?
A.Its safety. B.Environmental effect.
C.Social equality. D.Its expense.

Trees are symbols of hope, life and transformation. They are also increasingly labeled as a straightforward, relatively inexpensive, and best solution to climate change. Lately, society has been putting a lot of pressure on trees to get the whole world out of the climate change emergency. Accordingly, enthusiasm is worldwide popular among governments, businesses and individuals for ambitious projects to plant billions, even a trillion more, so as to help cut current emission (排放).
“Trees are having a bit of a moment right now,” says Joe Fargione, an ecologist with The Nature Conservancy based in Minneapolis. “There’s no anti-tree lobby. Trees have lots of benefits for people. Not only do they store carbon, they help provide clean air, prevent soil erosion, shade and shelter homes to reduce energy costs and give people a sense of well-being.”
Yet, as global eagerness for adding more trees grows, some scientists are urging caution. Before moving forward, they say, such massive tree projects must address a range of scientific, social and economic concerns. Poorly designed projects that don’t address these issues could do more harm than good, the researchers say, wasting money as well as public goodwill. “There’s a real feeling that forests and trees are just the idea we can use to get some unspeakable support for many, perhaps more complicated, types of landscape restoration initiatives”, says ecologist Joseph Veldmanan.
The concerns are myriad: There’s too much focus on numbers of seedlings planted, and too little time spent on how to keep the trees alive in the long term, or in working with local communities. And there’s not enough emphasis on how different types of forests store very different amounts of carbon. There’s too much talk about trees, and not enough about other carbon-storing ecosystems. And over the last decade, a diverse garden of tree-centric proposal has spread across the globe. That can lead to all kinds of problems, Joseph adds. “For me, the devil is in the details.”
28.According to Paragraph 1, what is the global fever?
A.Getting rid of the air pressure of the earth. B.Launching environment-based movements.
C.Spending more time on global tree projects. D.Planting more trees to handle climate change.
29.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.Tree-planting projects might be wrongly used. B.There’s no scientific basis for planting programs.
C.Growing mere trees is just a waste of money. D.Public goodwill is surely abused to a certain degree.
30.What does the underlined word “myriad" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Unique. B.Precise. C.Many. D.Reliable.
31.How does the author like the tree-based idea to solve climate change?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Neutral. D.Unclear.
D
One of the greatest mysteries in science is just how Earth went from a planet with minimal oxygen to the breathable air we have now. Scientists long figured that cyanobacteria (蓝细菌) were involved, but couldn’t tell what started the great oxygen-producing cycle.
A new study published in Monday’s Nature Geoscience may provide the key. It theorizes that Earth’s gradually lengthened day from six hours to the current 24 hours kick-starts cyanobacteria into producing lots of oxygen, making most of life as we know it possible. Here are the takeaways of the study.
About 2. 4 billion years ago, there was so little oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere that it could barely be measured, so no animal or plant could live. Instead, lots of bacteria breathed in CO2, and in the case of cyanobacteria, produced oxygen in the earliest form of photosynthesis (光合作用).
At first it wasn’t much. But in about 400 million years, as Earth’s rotation (旋转) gradually slowed down and the day was lengthened from six hours to the present 24 hours, the cyanobacteria breathed more and more oxygen into Earth’s atmosphere until it reached one-tenth the amount of oxygen we have now. The increased oxygen allowed plants to join in the oxygen-making party.
The authors of the study put their theory to test with the bacteria found on a 24-meter-deep seabed in Lake Huron. They exposed the smelly bacteria, which are very similar to the cyanobacteria living around 2. 4 billion years ago, to varying amounts of light, and found that the more continuous light the bacteria got, the more oxygen they produced.
“What makes the idea so convincing is that it doesn’t require any big biological changes in bacteria or the world’s oceans,” said Tim Lyons, a professor at the University of California, Riverside, who wasn’t part of the research team. “This may be a simple but plausible explanation for Earth’s oxygen increase.”
32.What started the oxygen-producing cycle according to the new study?
A.Earth’s faster rotation. B.The lengthened daytime.
C.The bacteria in Lake Huron. D.The appearance of plants on Earth.
33.What is the main purpose of the experiment?
A.To protect the cyanobacteria. B.To study the similarities of the bacteria.
C.To provide evidence for the theory. D.To improve the oxygen level on seabed.
34.What does the underlined word “plausible” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Reasonable. B.Sincere. C.Complex. D.Unacceptable.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Rotation of Earth Is Slowing Down B.Cyanobacteria’s Role Has to Be Re-examined
C.A Breakthrough Is Achieved in Ocean Protection D.Earth’s Slowing Rotation Increased Oxygen Production

Kumar was a hard-working and ambitious student in Academic Magnet High School, who had a preference for the engineering design. One day he was walking home from school. Nothing pleased him more than to walk along the busy street and look at the glass doors of the shops. When doing so, he never failed to stop to look at the latest laptops in the computer shop. He was thinking. “I would love so much to own that laptop. But nobody will buy it for me.”
So Kumar thought hard of what to do. The school holiday was coming up next week. An idea struck him. He would do odd jobs to earn some money. Yes! That was what he would do.
His house is next to East Lake shore Drive in Chicago, where there stand varieties of cottages with beautiful gardens. It follows that he designed a plan of working in his neighbors’ gardens. First, he would approach them and ask them to let him clean up their gardens. After his finishing the job. each owner would probably pay him $50 or $ 60. Working in more than ten gardens would enable him to accumulate enough cash to buy his beloved laptop. Making up his mind triggered a feeling of joy and a brisk walk home.
The next day. he went around his neighborhood and asked the residents if he could clean their gardens. He asked them politely. “Excuse me. can I work in your garden during the school holiday?” Many of the owners were kind of curious about what Kumar was requiring and asked why. Having known about his thirsty for a laptop, they all replied “Yes”. They liked the courteous (有礼貌的) boy.
So Kumar started working in his first house. He woke up early that morning. He took three hours to clear the rubbish and cut the grass. It was not easy work. He had to mow the grass. After that, he had to pull the weeds. Then, he had to arrange the flowerpots. This arduous (艰巨的) work went on for a week. Consequently, he had no time for games or even watching television.
