One rainy afternoon, I was on a crosstown bus when a young woman jumped on. She had a child with her who must have been about 3 or 4 years old.
The bus was full and bumpy, and it soon got noisy as her kid began crying because he couldn't sit next to his mother. There were a couple of open seats, but they weren't together. She was flustered and looked embarrassed.
Then another woman, a little older, stood up and moved so that the mother and child could sit together. The mom smiled and said “thanks” to the woman. And then three words came out of the older woman's mouth that elevated the entire energy of that bus ride:“I've been there”.
Simple, undramatic and honest. At that moment, it seemed to unite people. Why? Because almost all experiences are shared human experiences. We forget that, as we forge (稳步前进) through life, focusing on our own troubles and needs—which are actually less unique than we think. How can these three words create more connections in your life? Ask yourself: “Where am I holding back?”
One thing I know for sure is this: Healing others helps heal yourself. I noticed this recently with my friend, Tracy, who took a new friend who had suffered miscarriage under her wing. Tracy had three of them before having her daughter two years ago. Our intellect needs a doctor to explain the medical side of things, yes. But our souls need human connections to help us along. No one can do that better than someone who has been exactly where you are.
Can the essence of these three words help you make a small difference right now? It can be as simple as volunteering your seat, sharing some helpful advice or even lightening the mood with a joke when you notice that someone's uncomfortable—because we're all in this together.

C.The woman got to her destination and was ready to get off the bus.
D.The woman took the exact seat that the boy was on just now.
6.Which of the following statements is reasonable according to the passage?

There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences. Lack of cultural understanding will lead to disagreement among people from different cultures. Meeting with other cultures is actually very interesting and fun. It is certainly a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.
The gesture “thumbs-up” is commonly misunderstood. In English, it is known as “thumbs up”, though the action is commonly performed with only one hand. English-speaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”, which has the same meaning as the OK gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.
To most Europeans, it signals the number 1, since they count from 1 to 5 beginning with the thumb for 1 and ending with the little finger for 5. Americans usually start counting with the index finger for 1, and end with the thumb.
Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardinia or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While Americans, the British and Australians would use the thumbs-up sign to signal hitch-hiking, this message will not encourage a Northern Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.
What does the “OK” sign mean to you? If you are an English-speaking Caucasian, it means “OK” or “good”. The French understand it as “zero” or “worthless”. The Japanese would read it as “money”.
Don't show this gesture to a Greek. Ancient Greek vases have been found showing this gesture as an insult. So, if you use this sign in Greece to tell a person that he is “OK”, he will feel insulted. Other regions where this sign can be insulting are Turkey, Malta, Sardinia, Tunisia, Russia, Paraguay, and Brazil.
8.What does the “thumbs-up” gesture show among English-speaking Caucasians?
    A.Agreement.
    B.Respect.
    C.Calmness.
    D.Disappointment.
9.What number does the thumbs-up most probably stand for in America?
    A.1. B.2.
    C.4. D.5.
10.What should be avoided if you are in Brazil?
    A.Asking for a lift.
    B.Giving the “OK” sign.
    C.Trying to speak English.
    D.Showing the “thumbs-up” gesture.
11.What does the text mainly talk about?
    A.The function of body language.
    B.How to communicate with foreigners.
C.The different meanings of two gestures.
D.The importance of the language expression.
    D
Reading and writing poetry can be a very personal experience. Poets use language as a way of expressing their feelings. Poems can describe the beauty of nature, a person, a dream or a memorable event. Most people have tried writing poetry at some time. For children, it is a good way to explore language and have fun with words as well as to express themselves.
But teachers and psychologists have found another use for poetry as a form of therapy (疗法) to help people. Writing poetry can help people deal with changes in their lives—death or feelings of sadness. By writing down your feelings, you can learn to understand yourself better and make your voice heard if you feel you are being ignored. Writing a poem might be a way of telling someone something when you do not feel able to talk about it face-to-face. And even if people are ill or having difficulties in their lives, it doesn't mean they have lost their sense of humor. Poems written as therapy can be funny too, as laughter is also considered to be very good medicine.
Students at a special school in Dudley, England, read and write poems every day. Some of the poems they write are very good, but their reason for writing is not just to be creative. All of them have problems. Some of them have long-term medical conditions, such as cancer, while others have personality disorders or psychological problems. By writing poems students are growing in self-confidence. The poems provide a channel through which they can communicate with the world, and express their feelings. They also help them to recognize and explore their problems and to develop a positive attitude to life.
But the poems are helping other people, too. The school has collected some of the students' poems and published them in a book which is being sold to raise funds for a local hospital. The book has proved very popular, giving students motivation and a sense of achievement.
12.How can poetry work as therapy?
    A.By solving physical problems.
    B.By staying away from humor.
    C.By communicating face-to-face.
    D.By promoting expression.
13.What makes the students of the school in Dudley special?
    A.They suffer from many problems.
    B.They know many poems.
    C.They are very confident.
    D.They are very positive.
14.What does the published book mean to the students?
    A.They'll get wealthy.
    B.They'll get inspired.
    C.They'll become popular psychologists.
    D.They'll become professional poets.
15.What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A.The creation of poetry.
    B.The power of poetry.
    C.The development of poetry.
    D.The appreciation of poetry.

New rules and behavior standards for middle school students came out in March. The middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. 16 They will also be kids who don't dye their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied from someone else in an exam? 17 That's not something an honest student should do.

Protect yourself. Has anyone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't for kids, so try to look at web pages that are good for you. 20

Ever since a 2009 cycling accident put him in a wheelchair, Dan Black of Chepstow, Wales, has had one dream—walking.
He has adapted to his limitations, but he longs for the freedom and activity he once had. His mother says he “goes to bed dreaming he can walk and run”, which is why he was excited to learn about cutting-edge stem cell research being done in China, and a treatment that could possibly lead to the recovery of his legs.
But there are two big problems between Dan and his dream. First, the research is so cutting-edge that it may be years before the treatment is an actual, real possibility for him. And the second is the most practical of all considerations: money. The procedure would doubtless cost tens of thousands of dollars—maybe more.
And these are not all for Dan. He lost the use of his legs and his right arm in the accident. He requires around-the-clock care, so it's hard for him to find a job. His lifestyle is, according to his mother, “terrible”. Coming up with the money he will need for those treatments—when and if they are available—was a source of great concern to the young Welshman.
Encouraged by love and concern for Dan, friends worked hard through a series of fund-raising activities over a period of five years to get more than 20,000 pounds for the procedure. Dan was moved by this extraordinary kindness and felt he could really start looking forward to the day when he could turn his dream of walking again into a reality.
Then he heard about Brecon, a 5-year-old boy who also lives in Chepstow and suffers from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, which severely limits his ability to walk. Dan learnt that a new surgical procedure being done in the United States could allow the little boy to walk unaided. But the surgery would require more than 60, 000 pounds—money Brecon's parents were having a hard time raising.
    Paragraph 1:
“It appears that Brecon can walk if he gets his operation, but I can't right now,” Dan said to himself.

    Paragraph 2:
Brecon's parents were greatly moved by Dan's behavior.

故选A。
根据第三段中的“Americans usually start counting with the index finger for 1, and end with the thumb.”
根据最后一段中的“So, if you use this sign in Greece to tell a person that he is ‘OK’, he will feel insulted.Other regions where this sign can be insulting are Turkey, Malta, Sardinia, Tunisia, Russia, Paraguay, and Brazil.”

All of them have problems. Some of them have long-term medical conditions, such as cancer, while others have personality disorders or psychological problems. 故选A。
The book has proved very popular, giving students motivation and a sense of achievement.
探索 4.deal with处理,对付 5.ignore v.

play an important role in...

    Reason

    情节
    Beginning
    Dan Black
    Development

    Para. 1
“It appears that Brecon can walk if he gets his operation, but I can't right now,” Dan said to himself.
①How did Dan help the boy?
②What did Dan think at that time?
    Para. 2
Brecon's parents were greatly moved by Dan's behavior.
①What did the boy's parents think at that time?
②What did this help mean to Dan?
    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
“It appears that Brecon can walk if he gets his operation, but I can't right now,” Dan said to himself. So he felt that the money seemed more valuable to the boy. “I'm incredibly grateful to everyone...who has helped me out,” he said. “But this boy needs it more than I do at the moment.” So he took the cash—also his dream—out of the bank and handed it over to Brecon's parents, telling them, “It would make me very happy to see the difference made to Brecon's life.”
    Paragraph 2:
Brecon's parents were greatly moved by Dan's behavior. “It is really an amazing gift,” Brecon's mother said. Brecon's father could only shake his head in wonder. “How do you even start saying ‘thank you’ for something like that?” he asked. But for Dan's part, no thanks are required. He just wanted to help someone whose life could get better, and if he can help someone to walk, that is just like his dream coming true.
