I used to have a friend called Matilda. We were together at secondary school. When we were 16, she moved because of her father's job, but we kept in touch. Fred was a poor man who lived alone in a small village. He was lazy and didn't want to find a job. He had no friends or relatives. He used to beg for food for his living.

One day, a kind man gave Fred a large bowl of rice. Fred didn't eat up the rice in one go. He put the remaining rice on the table. He lay on his bed and kept an eye on it.

As a young boy, I enjoyed listening to my father telling his childhood stories. The picture of him and his friends climbing to the top of a tree to look at a bird's nest stayed in my mind for quite a while.
