American and British peple bth speak English f curse. But smetimes it des nt seem like the same language. In fact, there are sme imprtant differences between British English and American English.
First f all, they sund very different. Often, Americans dn't say each wrd separately. They say several wrds tgether. Americans may say “I dunn” instead f “I dn't knw”. Hwever, the British are mre careful n their speech. They usually say all the wrds and keep them separate.
Als, sme letters have different sunds. Fr example, the Americans say the “a” in half like the “a” in cat. But the British say the “a” in half like the “” in sft.
Sund is nt the nly difference between British English and American English. Wrds smetimes have different meanings t. Sme American wrds are never used in England. The same thing is true f sme British wrds in America. Fr example, the vcabulary fr cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England they drive lrries.
Many expressins are als different in the tw cuntries. In England, if yu are ging t telephne friends, yu “ring them up”. In America yu “give them a call”.
There are als smetimes differences in grammar. Fr example, Americans usually use the helping verb “d” when they ask a questin. They say “D yu have class tday?”But the British ften leave ut the helping verb. They say “Have yu class tday?”
All these differences can be cnfusing if yu are learning English. But mst languages are like this. Languages change ver time. When peple live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what happened t English. It can als happen t ther languages, such as French. Many peple in Canada speak French but their French is very different frm the French f France.

Organized by the Cultural and Educatin Sectin f the British Embassy, “Dare t Speak” examines if Chinese peple will speak English in “reallife” situatins.
Matthew Knwles, an acting student frm Suth Carlina at Beijing Film Academy, acted the part as the “driver”. He cllected six passengers n Saturday mrning, mst f whm were female whitecllar (白领)wrkers.
“Of curse they were surprised at first, wndering why I'm driving a taxi, and wndering whether this is a real taxi, but then mst f them were pretty willing t speak,” he said. Knwles said he was als surprised by his “passengers”. “Apart frm my first ‘passenger’, wh culd speak very little English, all the rest spke English very well, and it was fun t cmmunicate with them,” he said, adding that sme “passengers” were quite talkative.
The “freign taxi driver” prject was just ne f the “Dare t Speak” activities, which have been ging n since the end f Octber. Other prjects included a freign stre wner near a high schl in Beijing, a ck in a Shanghai university canteen. They were testing the willingness f Chinese peple, especially students and whitecllar wrkers, t speak t freigners in English.
Rng Xin, senir manager f IELTS (雅思) with the British Embassy, said they hped t let IELTS takers in China knw that cmmunicatin is the ultimate gal f IELTS.
“We hpe that mre and mre IELTS takers in China can realize the imprtance f cmmunicating in English in real life, instead f just getting high test scres,” she said.
