A young boy recently received an unexpected message in the mail from his father Joseph, who died two years ago.
Rowan’s dad was a hard-working man who wanted to give his son the best life he could. It was why Rowan’s mother, Julie Van Stone, said Joseph joined the Navy and went to MIT to get two Master’s degrees.
While at school in Boston, he would often write to Rowan. Even when he left school and was driving back to Colorado, he would send postcards from each state he stopped in. Those postcards were sent in 2007. “I remember him saying he had sent 5 or 6, but Rowan had only got 3 or 4 in the mail. But I never thought anything of it,” Van Stone said.
Those postcards and pictures are priceless memories for Van Stone and her son, especially after Joseph passed away from a rare brain disease. Rowan never had a chance to say goodbye. But, on Saturday, just days before the two-year anniversary of Joseph’s death, a postcard arrived in the mail. It arrived on March 11, 2015. The message read: “Hello from Pennsylvania. I love you, and I miss you so much. See you soon. Love, Daddy.”
Neither he nor his mother knows how it happened, and they may never know. But they have their own ideas. “I feel like that was the final goodbye that he didn’t get to say,” Van Stone said. Van Stone says Joseph’s last words to her before he died were: “Everything is a circle. We will see each other again. All that matters is love.”

The interview is an important event in the job-hunting process, because the 20 or 30 minutes you spend with the interviewer may decide whether or not you get the particular job you want. Therefore, it is important to remember that your purpose during the interview may differ from that of the potential employer. You want to make yourself stand out as a whole person who has personal strengths and should be considered the right person for the job. It is encouraging to know that the interviewer’s task is not to embarrass you, but to hire the right person for the job.
Remember, job hunting is very competitive. Anything you can do to improve your interview techniques will be to your advantage. The following suggestions may help you land the most important job.
Your goal in this interview is to make sure your good points get across. The interviewer won’t know them unless you point them out, so try to do this in a factual and sincere manner.
Don’t say anything bad about your former employers. If you have been fired from a job and the interviewer asks about it, be honest.
Show the interviewer that you are interested in the company by asking questions. Ask about responsibilities, working conditions, promotion opportunities and benefits of the job you are interviewing for.
If at some point you decide the interview is not going well, do not let your discouragement show. You have nothing to lose by continuing a show of confidence, and you may have much to gain. It may be real, or it may be a test to see how you react to adverse conditions.
Some interviewers may bring up salary early in the interview. At this time, you may show that you are more interested in a job where you can prove yourself worth a specific salary. This politely passes the question back to the interviewer. If possible, you should negotiate(沟通v.) for salary after you have been offered a job and have completed the paperwork.
6. To get the job you want, during the interview you should _________________.
A. avoid the interviewer’s questions that are designed to embarrass you
B. remember that you are the best
C. make yourself stand out as the right person for the job
D. tell yourself that you want to get the job
7. If you did not get along with your former employer, you ________________.
A. should tell a lie to the interviewer B. should not speak ill of him
C. should refer to him in a factual manner D. should never mention it
8. The underlined word “adverse” in the fifth paragraph can be replaced by _____________.
A. difficult B. friendly C. opposite D. indifferent
9. During an interview, you_____________.
A. had better ask some questions concerning the company
B. should bring up a specific salary for you
C. mustn’t take advantage of interview techniques
D. will find the interviewer embarrassing all the way
10. The passage is mainly about _______________.
A. how to make your strengths understood
B. how to show your interest in the job
C. how to raise your salary in a job interview
D. how to deal with an interview with techniques
